Pickrel wins big as Jacks fall
February 14, 2010
GREELY, Colo. - The South Dakota State wrestling
team battled back from a 8-0 hole to take a 15-11 lead, but Northern
Colorado proved too strong, ending the match on an 18-0 run in a 29-15
victory at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion in Western Wrestling
Conference action.
The match of the night went to redshirt freshman Aaron Pickrel who
defeated three-time NCAA National Qualifier Tony Mustari 3-2. After
scoreless first period, Pickrel notched an escape in the second to take
a 1-0 lead. Mustari would knot the score at 1-1 on an escape of his own
but Pickrel countered with a takedown, pushing to score to 3-1. Mustari
would add an escape with one second left but it wouldn't be enough as
Pickrel notched the biggest victory of his young career, giving the
Jacks their biggest lead of the night at 15-11. The win pushes his win
total to 21-11 on the year and 7-5 in duals.
David Michaud put the Jacks on the board with a pin early in the first
period at the 1:21 mark to bring the Jacks to within two at 8-6. Tyler
Sorenson, ranked 27th in the newly released Coaches' Panel Rankings and
24th in RPI won by forfeit at 197 pounds to give the Jacks at 12-8 lead
after the first four matches. Michaud is now 6-8 overall and 1-5 in
dual action while Sorenson is 25-5 overall and 11-2 in duals.
Dustin Walraven took nationally ranked Kenny Hashimoto to the wire, but
fell in a 6-4 decision. Down 5-2 late in the third period, Walraven
scored a two-point reversal bringing the score to 5-4 but Hashimoto
would add an escape to round out the 6-4 victory.
The second-straight win boosts the Bears to 2-3 in league action and
3-13 on the season while the Jackrabbits remain winless in the WWC at
0-5 and fall to 1-11-1 overall.
