No. 5 Augustana Wrestlers Fall to Top-Ranked Nebraska-Omaha 26-6

February 17, 2010

In a battle of top 5 teams, top-ranked Nebraska-Omaha defeated fifth-ranked Augustana 26-6 Wednesday night at the Sapp Fieldhouse in Omaha, Neb.

Augustana slipped to 11-6 in duals while UNO improved to 13-1.

The dual was closer than the final score would indicate. While the Mavericks claimed 8 of the 10 matches, there were no pins and several matches were not decided until well into the third period.

The marquee match of the night came at 197 pounds where Augustana’s Ty Copsey, a two-time All-American and ranked No. 3 in the nation, locked up with Jacob Marrs, the national runner-up in 2009 and the top-ranked wrestler in the nation. After the score was tied 2-2 after regulation, Copsey scored a takedown with 29 seconds left in sudden victory to claim a 4-2 win.

Augustana’s other win came at 165 pounds where Gavin Nelson defeated Nathan Sigman 5-2. Nelson led 1-0 heading into the third period before getting a pair of takedowns in the final stanza.

Another match that went down to the wire was the 285-pound match where UNO’s Elijah Madison, ranked No. 2 in the nation, edged Augustana’s Lance Peters 1-0.

Five other matches pitted nationally-ranked wrestlers against one another, and UNO won all five. At 133 pounds, No. 2 Cody Garcia edged Augie’s Laramie Shaffer, ranked eighth, 6-2. At 141 pounds, No. 3 Mario Morgan defeated No. 7 Jay Sherer by a 5-3 score. Next, UNO’s Esai Dominguez, ranked third, recorded a 12-4 major decision over No. 5 Nate Herda.

The Mavericks’ George Ivanov, ranked fifth at 157 pounds, upset the Vikings’ Marcus Edgington, ranked No. 1 in the nation, by a 10-5 count. Finally, Augustana’s Carl Serck, ranked eighth at 174 pounds, dropped an 11-3 major decision to No. 5 Aaron Denson.

Augustana is off now until Sunday, February 28, when the Vikings compete in the Super Region 3 Championships in Aberdeen, S.D. The Vikings are currently the top-ranked team in the region.
