February 18, 2010

FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State wrestling team lost its third straight dual on Thursday night, dropping a heart-breaking 23-22 decision to South Dakota State in front of 628 fans at the Bison Sports Arena.  It was SDSU’s first win over NDSU since 1997.  NDSU is now 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the Western Wrestling Conference.

After opening the night with two losses, the Bison reeled off five straight wins, but the Jackrabbits won the final three bouts, including the match-winning heavyweight contest.

The Bison went down 10-0 early after Aaron Pickrel won a 15-5 major decision over sophomore Justin Solberg at 125 pounds and an NDSU forfeit at 133 pounds.

Wrestling in his final home match, senior Ryan Adams got the squad back on track with a 16-5 major decision win over Dustin Walraven at 141 pounds.  Adams notched six takedowns in the win, including three in the final period.  He also tallied a three-point near fall in the third period.

Junior Andrey Patselov then claimed a 16-6 major decision over Nick Hagar at 149 pounds.  Patselov had four takedowns in the first period to jump out to an early lead and never looked back.

At 157 pounds, junior Vince Salminen gave the Bison their first lead of the night at 12-10 with a 14-2 major decision over Nick Flynn.

Sophomore Tyler Johnson tallied five takedowns and two near falls before pinning Seth Moe in 4:42 at 165 pounds.

At 174 pounds, redshirt freshman Mac Stoll came up big with a 15-5 major decision over Marc Wermersen to push the score to 22-10.

South Dakota State turned the match around after David Michaud pinned junior Kenny Moenkedick at 184 pounds.  A 15-4 major decision for Tyler Sorenson at 197 pounds cut NDSU’s lead to two points at 22-20.

With the match on the line at heavyweight, freshman Joe Arthur and Kevin Kelly remained scoreless through the first period.  Kelly held almost two minutes of riding time in the second period before Arthur notched an escape with six seconds remaining.  In the third period, a Kelly takedown with 12 seconds remaining sealed the 4-1 decision as well as the SDSU win.

After a week off, the Bison will travel to Brookings, S.D. for the NCAA West Regional March 6.
