Northern State Sneaks Past Mustangs

MARSHALL, Minn. - Northern State rallied from a 15-0 deficit to defeat Southwest Minnesota State 21-18 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wrestling Friday night in Marshall.
The Wolves improve to 6-8 (3-4 NSIC); the Mustangs drop to 4-5 (1-5 NSIC).
SMSU came out strong as A.J. Jenniges defeated Jacob Buterous 11-10 at
133 pounds. That put the Mustangs up 9-0 as NSU left 125 pounds open.
Brandan Schunk then recorded a win at 141 pounds over Benton Crow 12-8,
while Demond Carter added another victory for the Mustangs with a 9-4
decision over Beau Voegeli at 149 pounds.
The Wolves, however, rallied, rattling off wins in the ensuing five bouts.
The match was tied 15-15 heading into the 184-pound bout when SMSU's CD
Johnson was defeated 8-5 by NSU's Cale Corneman to put the Wolves up
18-15. NSU added to its lead when Matt Meuleners took a 9-5 decision
from Andrew Rodas at 197 pounds.
Trailing by six points heading into the heavyweight bout, Brian Rodas
nearly came up with the pin in the closing moments, but NSU's Jared
Little managed to hold him off. Rodas won the contest 7-4. A pin would
have tied the dual at 21-21.
The Mustangs host No. 9 Minnesota State, Mankato at 3 p.m.
