Wilson and Makabe Aid Mavericks to Comeback Win Over Mustangs
February 20, 2010
Marshall, Minn. -- Maverick senior heavyweight Brady Wilson (Faribault, Minn.) cruised to a technical victory and tied the Minnesota State
career record for wins with 136. In the process, he put the capper on a
wild 22-15 dual win over Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday. The
Mavericks improved to 9-5 on the season and finished 4-3 in Northern
Sun Intercollegiate action.
Junior Andy Forstner (Madelia, Minn.) earned a major decision win at
125 pounds to get the Mavericks on the board but two straight Mustang
wins put MSU down 6-4 heading into 149 pounds. Senior Travis Elg
(Mountain Lake, Minn.) put the Minnesota State back in front with a
dominating 20-8 win over previously ranked Demond Carter, followed by a
4-1 win from fellow senior Justin Turek (New Prague, Minn.) at 157
pounds.
Minnesota State fell behind by a score of 12-11when senior Darren Olsen
(Davis, Ill.) was forced to default at 165 pounds due to injury.
Another Mustang win at 174 put the Mavericks in a 15-11 hole with only
three matches left. Sophomore Aaron Norgren (Good Thunder, Minn.) began
the comeback with 3-1 win at 184 pounds, securing a takedown with less
that 10 seconds remaining.
Perhaps the most exciting and important match of the afternoon came at
197 pounds. Junior John Makabe (Apple Valley, Minn.), a 157-pounder at
the start of the season, traded escapes in his match with Alex Huls to
push the match into overtime. Midway through the extra set, Makabe
picked up an upper-body takedown to give the Mavericks some breathing
room heading into heavyweight.
Wilson rolled to an 18-3 technical victory in just 4:46, improving to
26-4 on the season. He tied four-time All-American Jason Rhoten's
Minnesota State career mark and improved his career ledger to 136-20.
The Mavericks will compete at the NCAA North Regional qualifier next Sunday at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D.
