Adams, Salminen Win Titles at NCAA West Regional

BROOKINGS, S.D. – North Dakota State senior Ryan Adams claimed the 141 pound title and junior Vince Salminen won the 157 pound title to lead the Bison at the NCAA West Regional on Saturday, March 6.  Both Adams and Salminen will now compete at the NCAA Championships March 18-20.  Junior Andrey Patselov finished second at 149 pounds and sophomore Drew Ross was second at 197 pounds.

Adams won his first regional title and third career bid to the NCAA Championships.  He pinned Wyoming’s Chase Smith in 1:12 in the first round and then won a 10-4 decision over Kenny Hashimoto of Northern Colorado in the semifinal.  In the final, Adams avenged a dual loss to Air Force’s Cole Von Ohlen, winning a 5-4 decision.

Salminen won his first title and earned his first bid to the NCAA Championships.  He pinned Nick Flynn of South Dakota State in 4:41 in the opening round.  He then won a 12-9 decision over Northern Colorado’s Justin Gaethje in the semifinals.  Salminen then faced off against Tyson Reiner of Northern Iowa in the final and won an 8-4 decision.

Patselov finished second at 149 pounds after dropping a close 3-2 decision to Northern Iowa’s Trent Washington in the final.  He won a 3-1 decision over UNC’s Justin Gonzalez in the first round and then won a 6-2 decision over Wyoming’s Cole Dallaserra to advance to the final.

Ross was the runner-up at 197 pounds.  He pinned the No. 2 seed Alfonso Hernandez of Wyoming in 2:38 in the first round before winning a 6-5 decision over UNI’s Dustin Bauman.  He lost to top-seeded Tyler Sorenson of South Dakota State by technical fall in the final.

Sophomore Tyler Johnson (165), junior Kenny Moenkedick (184) and freshman Joe Arthur (Hwt) all finished with 1-2 records.  Sophomore Justin Solberg (125) and redshirt freshman Mac Stoll (174) both went 0-2.

Adams and Salminen will compete at the NCAA Championships beginning March 18.
