Winona State finishes 6th in very strong NCC Tournament
March 6, 2010
The Winona State Wrestling Club headed to Caledonia Michigan on Feb. 27
for their last step on the trail to Nationals. The Warrior wrestlers
worked hard and had their highest conference finish in their young
history scoring a club record 59 points.
Finishing ahead of the WSU Club team was Southern Illinois University
at Edwardsville 202.5 pts, who is transitioning into NCAA Div 1 from
Div 2, traditional NCWA national power Grand Valley State's #1 team
with 201.5 pts, Oakland (MI) University 128.5 pts, GVSU's #2 team with
107 pts, and Wayne State College of Nebraska 71.5 pts.
Qualifying was especially difficult this year with the conference going
from seven automatic qualifiers per weight last year down to six per
weight this year. Only three Warriors earned automatic bids to the
national tournament led by third place finisher #7 ranked Cam Miller
(Plainview-Elgin-Millville, MN) and followed by Kristopher Hoffman
(Plainview-Elgin-Millville, MN) at 235 taking fourth place. The last
qualfier was #14 ranked Eric Weigel (Boscobel, WI) who injury defaulted
to sixth place after sustaining an injury early in the tournament. He
should be ready to go when the Warriors make the trip to Hampton,
Virginia on March 11-13.
Receiving wild card berths into the national tournament is #9 ranked
Chad Stenson at 157 (Chisago Lakes, MN) and 40 year old Derek Olson at
174 (La Crosse Logan HS, WI)
With five competitors in the tournament the Warrior men are hoping to
improve on last years 57th place finish and finish in the top 25. Based
on points earned during the season, the Warriors are currently ranked
21st.
