March 13, 2010
OMAHA, Neb. – The final round of the NCAA Division-II National
Championships started at Nebraska-Omaha and MSU-Moorhead junior Derek Bomstad looked
to rebound from a close loss and win out in the third place bracket.
Bomstad’s efforts in the
tournament paid off as the junior placed sixth
overall and came away with All-American honors.
Bomstad started the late session with match up against Thomas Hepburn
(Nebraska-Kearney). Hepburn won a close match with a 3-2 decision and
Bomstad moved on to the fifth place match against Minnesota State
Mankato’s Travis Elg.
Elg gained a pin of Bomstad at the 1:12 mark of the match to secure
fifth while Bomstad placed sixth. Bomstad’s two wins early in the
tournament made him eligible for All-American honors.
Bomstad was joined by four other Dragons in the tournament in Kris
Nelson’s first year as Head Coach of Dragons wrestling. The Dragons
finished the season ranked No. 19 in the nation after the regional
