St. Cloud State wrestling's Jacob Kahnke earned a fourth place finish at 285-pounds to earn All-America status and lead the Huskies at the NCAA Division II championships on March 12-13 in Omaha, Neb.
Gabe
Suarez (141), Tad Merritt (165) and Shamus O'Grady (174) also earned
All-America honors for SCSU.
The tournament will conclude this evening with the championship
rounds. Listed below are the individual results through 6 p.m.
on Saturday. As the tournament headed into the championship round, the
Huskies were listed in 7th place with 44.5 points. Nebraska-Omaha will
repeat as national champions, as the Mavericks had already posted 121.0
team points - well ahead of second place Nebraska-Kearney and Augustana
(63.0).
141-pounds: Gabe Suarez posts an 8-4 victory over Daniel Genetin of
Ashland. Suarez then suffered a tough 8-3 loss to top seed Jeremy
Parker of Limestone in the quarterfinal round. Suarez stayed alive to
advance to Saturday action with a big 8-2 win over Dallas Evans of
Shippensburg. On March 13, Suarez opened the day with a 15-6 loss to
Andre Harrison of Fort Hays State. In the match for seventh place,
Suarez lost a 15-4 decision to Josh Hensley of Adams State. Suarez
gained All-America notice for his 8th place finish at the national
tournament.
157-pounds: SCSU's John Sundgren falls 6-5 against Jon Jackson of
Ashland in first round action. In the wrestlebacks, Sundgren picked up a
16-10 victory over Kyle Francis of Western State. Sundgren completed
his run at the nationals with a close 6-5 loss to Michael Williams of
UNC-Pembroke.
165-pounds: Tad Merritt advances to the second round of the championship bracket with a 3:14 pinfall over Wisconsin-Parkside's Matt Gille. In the quarterfinal match, Merritt suffered a 6-5 loss to Victor Carazo of Grand Canyon. In the wrestlebacks, Merritt stayed on track with a 6-2 decision over Jake Varilek of Grand Canyon. On Saturday, Merritt gained a 2:08 fall against Gavin Nelson of Augustana in the consolation round. Merritt then lost a tough 7-6 decision against Ryan Pankoke of UNO. In the battle for fifth place, Merritt trailed early in the match, but he rebounded to gain a pinfall victory over Taylor May of Nebraska-Kearney at 6:24. This mark's the second consecutive season that Merritt has gained All-America honors.
174-Pounds: SCSU's Shamus O'Grady rolls to a 16-4 major decison over Zack Frazier of Western State. O'Grady maintained his title hopes in the quarterfinals with a 6:21 pinfall victory over top seed J.J. Davis of UNC-Pembroke. O'Grady ended his run in the championship bracket with a 14-6 loss to Luke Rynish of UW-Parkside. In the wrestlebacks, O'Grady lost a 10-6 match against Mitch Norton of Upper Iowa. O'Grady lost to Christopher Barrick of Shippensburg in the battle for fifth place by a score of 6-3. O'Grady also gained All-America status with his sixth place finish at the tournament.
184-pounds: SCSU's Derek Skala falls into the consolation bracket
with a tough 7-6 loss to Shane Mallory of East Stroudsburg State. Skala
then added a 6-1 victory in the wrestlebacks over Jeffery Havelka of
Findlay. He completed his trip to Omaha in the next round with a 9-7
setback against Charlie Pipher of Western State.
197-Pounds: SCSU's Lucas Munkelwitz collects a 6:25 pinfall victory
over Joe Treml of UW-Parkside in first round action. In the
quarterfinal round, Munkelwitz dropped a 6-0 decision against Donovan
McMahill of Western State. In the wrestlebacks, Munkelwitz finished his
tournament with a 5-4 loss to Justin McKain of Nebraska-Kearney.
285-Pounds: SCSU's Jake Kahnke charted a lightning fast pin at :33
over Jesse Boggs of New Mexico Highlands in the first round at
285-pounds. In a well-played match in the quarterfinals, Kahnke rolled
with a 2-1 victory over Christopher Dempsey of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. In
the semi's, Kahnke lost a close 3-2 decision against Elijah Madison of
Nebraska-Omaha. Kahnke earned a spot in the third place bout thanks to a
4-1 victory over Charlie Alexander of Western State in the
wrestlebacks. Kahnke went on to finish in fourth place at the
championships as he lost a close overtime decision of 4-3 against Dustin
Finn of Central Oklahoma. This marks the first time that Kahnke has
earned All-America honors for the Huskies.
