MARSHALL, Minn. - Augsburg College, the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III preseason national wrestling poll, jumped out to an early 16-3 advantage and cruised to a 44-9 dual-meet victory over host Division II Southwest State on Tuesday night (12/8).
Justin Baker (Jr., Kerkhoven, Minn./Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunberg HS), at 157, closed out the match with a 1:53 fall at 157 pounds, the lone fall of the evening for the Auggies, now 2-0 on the season in dual meets. Four Auggie victories came by forfeit.
Brian Jones (Jr., Alexandria, Minn.) at 141 and Josh Cagle Jr., Faribault, Minn.), at 149, each scored technical-fall wins, while Shane Wevley (Jr., Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central Area HS) claimed an 11-0, major-decision victory.
Augsburg's varsity competes next at the St. Cloud State Invitational on Saturday (12/12), then travels to West Palm Beach, Fla., Dec. 29-30 for the Orange Bowl Sunshine Open. Augsburg finished second at the Sunshine Open last year, competing against primarily Division I teams.
