Fighting Illini overpowered by Gophers
The Gophers won nine of ten matches including a 6-2 upset at 149 pounds by 15th ranked Troy Marr over the Fighting Illini's 7th ranked Adam Tirapelle. At 197 pounds, Minnesota's Tim Hartung (#1) improved his season record to 25-0 with a 15-4 major decision over Illinois' 12th ranked Pat Quirk. At 184 pounds, Brandon Eggum (#1) also remains undefeated (21-0) for the Gophers picking up an 11-4 decision over 16th ranked Nate Patrick.
Minnesota's heavyweight, Brock Lesnar (#2), handled All-American Karl Roesler (#7) by a 9-2 score. Josh Holiday (165 pounds) and Bart Golyer (133 pounds) both picked up major decisions for Minnesota. The Gopher's only loss of the evening was at 141 pounds where 11th ranked Chad Erikson was pinned in a cradle by Illinois' All-American Carl Perry 32 seconds into the first period.
Minnesota is now 6-0 in Big Ten matches and 12-2 overall this season.
