NO. 2 GOLDEN GOPHER GRAPPLERS BEAT NO. 3 IOWA 19-17

- The second-ranked Golden Gopher wrestling team defeated No.
3-ranked Iowa 19-17 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa,
making it the third straight time the Golden Gophers have defeated
the Hawkeyes in their home arena.

- The meet started at 141, where No. 3-ranked Doug Schwab of
Iowa defeated freshman Chad Erikson with a 21-8 major decision
giving Iowa an early 4-0 lead. Iowa added four more points at 149,
where No. 1-ranked T. J. Williams decisioned 13th-ranked Troy Marr
7-2.

- At 157, No. 1-ranked senior Chad Kraft decisioned 13th-ranked
Jamie Heidt 7-4 to put the Golden Gophers on the board 7-3. Senior
Josh Holiday, ranked sixth nationally added four more points with
a 12-4 major decision over Ben Uker at 165. Iowa went up 13-7
after seventh-ranked Gabe McMahan pinned junior Delaney Berger in
2:55 at 174.

- Minnesota won the next three matches. Junior Brandon Eggum,
undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the country, decisioned No. 15 Paul
Jenn 10-3. The next match was the most exciting of the evening. At
197, No. 1-ranked Tim Hartung and No. 2-ranked Lee Fullhart
wrestled to a 2-2 score after regulation. In the overtime it was
Hartung with a takedown at 1:25 to win the match 4-2 and remain
undefeated.

- Junior college transfer Brock Lesnar, ranked No. 2 nationally,
continued his six meet dual win streak with a 6-0 decision over
No. 3-ranked Wes Hand. Lesnar's three points put Minnesota ahead
16-13.

- Freshman Leroy Vega added a necessary three points at 125 with
a 12-10 decision over Ben Kritsonis to put the Golden Gopher up
19-13. Iowa sophomore Eric Juergens, ranked No. 2 nationally,
needed a pin over senior Pat Connors to tie the match. Juergens
defeated Connors with a 20-10 major decision, making the final
score 19-17.
