December 3, 1998 - Mankato
Minnesota State, Mankato (currently ranked 7th in Division II) opened its dual meet season with a 45-0 loss to the University of Minnesota (currently ranked 2nd in Division I) in front of a crowd of 2,185 at Mankato's Otto Arena.
The Gophers recorded three pins and six major decisions enroute to their second shutout of the Mavericks in as many years. Last year the Gophers topped the Mavericks 38-0.
"When you wrestle this tough of competition, your weaknesses are going to be exposed quickly," said Mankato's Head Coach Jim Makovsky, "We got out-positioned and we got out-conditioned -- that's the stuff we need to work on."
Mankato's defending National Champion, Troy Syzdel, fell 6-3 to Troy Marr in the closest match of the night. Gopher freshman Chad Erikson defeated Maverick senior Travis Shives (ranked 5th) 17-5 and the Mavericks #2 ranked Matt Pettsinger was downed by the Gopher's #1 ranked Chad Kraft by a 18-6 major decision.
Minnesota's Tim Hartung picked up his 7th pin of the season and 42nd pin of his career. Hartung is nine pins away from tying the Gopher most pins record of 51, set by Billy Pierce in 1996.
