Cowboys top Gophers

November 29, 1998 - Minneapolis

Top ranked Oklahoma State extended their dual meet win streak to 47 by defeating the second ranked Golden Gophers by a 21-17 score in front of a fired up Minnesota crowd that included Governor Elect Jesse Ventura and Senator Paul Wellstone. Minnesota and Oklahoma State each won five matches, but a major decision at 125 pounds, a technical fall at 133 pounds and a pin at heavyweight made the difference for the Cowboys.

"We just took on, what might be the best team in the nation," said Oklahoma State's Teague Moore, "It turned out allright for us, but it was a squeaker."

The matchup featured three national champions and six of the nation's number one ranked wrestlers -- Teague Moore (defending national champion), Eric Guerrero (defending national champion) and Mark Smith for Oklahoma State and Chad Kraft, Brandon Eggum, and Tim Hartung (defending national champion) for Minnesota. All six won their respective matches.

Minnesota freshman Chad Erikson pulled off the only upset of the night by defeating eighth ranked Jamill Kelly by a 14-9 score.

The win for the Cowboys gives them a 14-2 all-time series lead over the Gophers and a 2-0 record for the season. The loss for the Gophers gives them a 1-1 record for the season.

"This team's got a long way to go," said Minnesota's Chad Kraft, "but we showed tonight that come March we're going to be right there"
