Remembering Ellsworth "Speedy" Bartels

A long time friend and supporter of wrestling in Minnesota passed away Wednesday, October 27. Ellsworth "Speedy" Bartels was 88 years old and had been actively involved with wrestling since 1962, as a parent and school board member at Brownton. He continued to follow his sons and grandsons in wrestling and the teams of Brownton, Glencoe, Glencoe-Silver Lake, Annandale, Annandale-Maple Lake and New Ulm right through the past State Tournament.

Speedy was on the board at Brownton when I was first hired to coach and I had the privilege of coaching his youngest son, Jim, who later owned The Guillotine prior to our purchasing the paper. In addition to wrestling, sons Bruce and Don were active with the newspaper as well. Bruce retired this past season from Annandale-Maple Lake as the head wrestling coach. Deloris, Speedy's wife, has also been one of the strongest and most knowledgeable fans I have known over the years.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bartels family at this time. Visitation is at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glencoe, Sunday, the 31st, from 5:00-8:00 pm. The funeral will be Monday afternoon at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at 2:00 pm.
