Anoka Wrestling Alumni Annual fundraising golf tournament

The Anoka Wrestling Alumni hosted their Annual fundraising golf tournament at Greenhaven Golf Club in Anoka on Monday, August 3rd. There were 128 golfers and another 40 guests at the banquet.

The banquet was a night where the Anoka Hennepin School District dedicated the AHS Wrestling Room in the name of former coach Ron Malcolm. John Hoffman, Anoka-Hennepin School Board, Mike Farley, AHS Principal, John Baufield, AHS Athletic Director and Todd Springer, AHS Head Wrestling Coach presented the plaque to Coach Malcolm.

Coach Malcolm had a table full of relatives that flew in for the big event.

Four former US Olympic wrestlers that Coach Malcolm had on his teams at Anoka High School got up and spoke about their days on the AHS wrestling team. Dave and Jim Hazewinkel, Dan Chandler and Brandon Paulson shared some of their memorable moments in wrestling.

Additional speakers were Chris Wagner who was one of Malcolm’s first state champions back in 1959. John Dehen, Greg Nybeck, Craig Vielguth, Mark Miley, Gordy Olson and Mike Rybak.

Coach Malcolm spent 34 years building a powerhouse at Anoka High School. He guided the Tornadoes to three team state championships, produced 21 individual state champions, 58 state place winners, and saw four of his wrestlers participate in eight Olympic Games. At the time of his retirement in 1992 he had an impressive 464-119-4 record. Ron Malcolm has received the following awards:
The tournament chairman, Bob Board, was a member of the 1955 Anoka State Team Champions, an individual state champion, and the first wrestling coach at Coon Rapids High School. Bob golfed with his son, Jeff Board, his former assistant coach, Marlyn Hyland, and one of his state champions, Gary Svendsen.

Olympian and future University of Minnesota wrestler Jake Deitchler golfed with his former coach at Anoka, Todd Springer, and two of Springer’s assistant coaches, Rich Miller and Kurt Werk.

David and Roger Way, Kevin Kish, Brad Holmbo, Jim Dussl, Chip Hilgers, Greg Clark, Todd Springer, all former Anoka wrestlers, and Pat Coleman, Deborah Holmbo, Mike Clark and Mike Farley were on the golf tournament committee with Bob Board.

To show their appreciation the future and present Anoka wrestlers carried golf bags for the golfers from their cars to the clubhouse.
