Tom was a three-time Region I champion, a four-time District I champion, five-time region entrant. His 136 wins ranked him in the top-ten most wins in state history at that time. Tom was a member of the Triton Coaching staff for six years.

ATHLETE/COACH:

Larry Goodnature (Albert Lea)
A 1971 graduate of Albert Lea High School, he won the 1971 145-pound one-class state title, and earned three NCAA All-American honors at Mankato State. Larry has guided his Albert Lea teams to a 345-125 mark in thirty-three years. Albert Lea has competed in the past four state tournaments, and they've won six Big Nine Conference titles. Goodnature's teams have earned a pair of state runner-up finishes to powerhouse Apple Valley.

COACHES:

Richrd “Dick” Shiels (Faribault)
Dick Shiels guided his Faribault teams to a 205-66-4 mark in twenty-five years with a pair of state consolation team titles. In 1977 and 1982, Dick’s teams earned five Big Nine Conference titles, three Region I titles, and five runner-up finishes. Dick wrestled for West Waterloo, IA legend Bob Siddens, and coined the phrase, “Good kids will always win, but the average kids win the dual meets for you". Dick served his country during the Korean War. He's a member of The National (Lifetime Service) and Minnesota Coaches Wrestling Hall of Fames.

Mike Mazzitelli (Dover-Eyota)
This Greenway-Coleraine graduate earned All-American honors at Itasca and Northern Illinois. He directed his team to the 1993 Minnesota state tournament. He also taught math and coached football and track at Rochester Community College after retiring from John Adams.

CONTRIBUTORS:

Harold “Dutch” Devries (Rochester)

Philo Region I Scholarship for twenty-two years. The other two members of that committee are charter member DeWaine Silker, and the late Bill Brunner. They were permanent fixtures in The Region I T-Shirt for the past twenty-two years. Now SEMWREC will take over their duties.
