Top ranked Apple Valley downed #3 Bloomington Kennedy 35-19 in front of a packed house at Bloomington Kennedy High School on Thursday evening. The win for Apple Valley solidifies their spot at the top of Class AAA after beating #2 Anoka a week ago.

The meet started out with a quick takedown for Kennedy's Shandon Ferguson at 103 pounds. But Apple Valley's 2nd ranked Charlie Falck recovered quickly and by the end of the first period nearly had Ferguson pinned. After that it was all Falck. He went on to score a technical fall and put Apple Valley on the board first.

At 119 pounds unranked Clark Chan of Bloomington Kennedy nearly found himself on his back twice early in the first period but was able to squirm out of both situations and even pick up a takedown to lead Valley's 6th ranked Ben Isabella 2-0 after the first period. Isabella reversed Chan in the second and rode him out the rest of the period. Chan regained the lead with a quick reversal but was nailed for stalling to cut the lead to 4-3. Isabella tied the match at 4-4 at the buzzer with an escape to send it to overtime. Chan was able to spin around Isabella 1:16 into the overtime for the win.

Kennedy's 4th ranked Jafari Vanier tied the team score at 8-8 after picking up a 25-9 technical fall with a takedown and nearfall in the final seconds of the match.

In one of the closest matches of the evening, Apple Valley's 4th ranked John Dorma lost 2-1 to Kennedy's top ranked Marlon Flemming. Dorma scored the first points of the match with an escape with 16 seconds left in the second period. Flemming tied the score in the third after he was awarded a penalty point for an illegal scissors. He went on to score an escape with 12 seconds left in the match for the one point win.

Kennedy moved Top ranked 135 pounder Jamell Tidwell up to 140 pounds where he scored a 16-8 major decision over Nick Christenson.

Kennedy forfeited at 145 pounds to Apple Valley's top ranked Jacob Schlottke and moved 6th ranked Matt Skahen up to 152.

The move didn't pay off for Kennedy though as Valley's Jason White scored a takedown with nine second left in the match to beat Skahen 5-4.

Kennedy's three-time State Champ Marcus Levesseur managed to win by a 15-7 major decision against Apple Valley's Brad Bruns at 160 pounds to pull Kennedy to within a point of Apple Valley at 20-19.

But Apple Valley pulled away winning the last three matches. Kennedy's Marshall Guy, ranked 6th at 160 pounds, lost a 4-3 decision to Apple Valley's Pete Senty at 171 pounds. And Valley's Mike Holtgren put the meet away with a pin against Kennedy's Brandon Brady.

About the only chance we had was to bump them [Skahen, LeVesseur, Guy] up and hopefully get three wins in a row," said Bloomington Kennedy Coach Chuck Vavrosky, "It just didn't work out that way."

"Everyone contributed to a great team victory for us," said Apple Valley Coach Jim Jackson of his team's performance. "I tip my hat to them [Kennedy], they've wrestled well all year, they're a solid team and we'll meet again hopefully."
