High school wrestling news from northern Minnesota

Congrats to recent 100 match winners Mark Bonagofsky M/W, Isaac Johnson LPA, and Scott Ahlf Josh Schindeldecker Menahga/Sebeka, Lou Vandermay of WDC, Colt Bergeron of TRF, Cory Swenson of PLPRB, Bobby Button of Barnesville, Eric Lindberg, Fertile-Beltrami, Justin Olson and Andy Quittschreiber of Frazee and Joe Werner of Perham who all recently reached the 100 win plateau.
Special congrats to Gabe Dretsch and Adam Aho of Frazee and Gabe Mooney of GBMR who have reached the 150 victory mark.
Thief River ruled the light weights to slip by Crookston 38-35. Prowler pins were earned by the Bergeron boys, Kyle Iverson, Zach Anderson, and Thain Abrahamson. Dan Leduc and Jeremy Anderson added major decisions. The Pirates got pins from Isaac Perala, Matt Genereax, Brett Steinbrink, Jordan Reese, and Vince Gonzales. Westy Hanson and Jim Perrault won decisions.
Six champs and three runnerups staked Frazee to the Heart O'Lakes Tournament with 257 points to 173 for runnerup Perham. Barnesville, West Central Area, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, Pelican Rapids, Breckenridge, and Lake Park-Audubon trailed. Hornet champs were Kelly Janke, Andy Quittschreiber, Brent Newling, Adam Aho, tournament MVW Gabe Dretsch, and Justin Olson. Ken Kahle, Blake Bristlin, Dan Mayfield were second and Mike Kleinschmidt and Darin Drewes third.
Dave Kosen and Jeremiah Enger won for DGF with Pat Swiggum, Dan Kava, Andy Heisinger third. Bob Button and Mike Cox were Barnsville champs with Kirk Anderson second and Brett Syverson and Matt Jorud third. Joe Werner and Justin Flatau won for Perham who had Greg Perrine and Ken Moenkedick second and Pete Kratzke, Phil Moenkedick, Tyler Doll, and Jon Flatau third. Pelican Rapids had Richard Milbeck and Jordan Arntson place second while Heinzelman, Jake Johnson, Taylor Michels and Chris Nelson were fourth. For LPA Tim Larson was second and Lance Zachariason and Isaac Johnson third. Breckenridge had the other two champions.
The Bush beat Fertile 46-18 winning nine matches including six in a row from 140 to 189 as the Hall brothers, Stanislawski, Dvergsten, Blumer and Hanson scored 28 points. Brazier, Mooney, Sluka, and Ingle also won for the gators. Falcon winners were Andrew Petersen, Kraft, Jerod Gunufson and Fuchs.
Frazee shut out Pelican Rapids 72-0 with Peter Anderson slipping by Kip Anderson 9-5 and Bristlin nipping Heintzelman 3-0.
BCLB beat Fosston/Bagley 42-36 with Joseph Bechtold, Kris Kolkin, Roy Gross, Kaleb, Shawn, and Aaron Young getting pins and Shawn Klein a forfeit. Justin Janssen and Matt Essig won decisions for the Brawlers who also claimed a forfeit and got pins from Sheldon Murphy, Tabor Gluth, Carl Cymbalik, and Cayle Hallberg.
Menahga/Sebeka kept their fine season going with victories over WHAN 46-33 and OTC 42-30. With their seventh title in the 26 years of the Lake Park Tournament the Warriors ended the four year reign of Fergus Falls. Joel Hendrickson became the seventh wrestler to win four titles joining brothers Nate 91-94 and Eric 95-98 who also turned the trick.
East Side lost to Mahnomen/Waubun 51-18 winning only four matches. Andy Preus and Steve Roseno earned pins, Scott Hanson a major decision and Ross Pape a 4-2 win over Adam Hoban.
Hibbing won the Grand Rapids Invitational putting ten wrestlers in the finals and claiming four titles. Josh Nyhus, Dan Vitali, Skip Johnson, and Elliott Osterhoudt claimed Bluejacket titles while Travis Timmerman, Kurt Manner, Eric Mattson, Ben Lamphere, Kyle Downs, and Ethan Osterhoudt lost the title match. Nate Rausch and Chad Zubke won WHAN crowns, Scott Lawless and Pat Nelson won for Virginia, Scott Chester and Jordan Keil for Aitkin, Lars Lisell and Andy Przekwas for Roseau, Joe Facchinni for Nashwauk-Keewatin/Greenway and Chuck Oleheiser for the host Thunderhawks. Other runnerups included Jed McGuire, Matt Pollock, and Kyle Curtiss of GR and Noel Barrett of Roseau. The other four came from Aitkin.
Detroit Lakes and Thief River Falls tied for third at the DL dual tourney won by Fergus Falls 41-19 over Wheaton-Herman-Norcross. TRF beat Moorhead 41-30 but fell to WHN 43-27. DL beat Little Falls 51-24 before falling 41-25 to FF. Little Falls beat Moorhead 45-30 for fifth. The All Tournament Team consisted of: Little Falls: Chris Roach, Adam Gosiak TRF: Colt Bergeron, Zack Anderson, Jeremy Anderson, Gavin Martell Detroit Lakes: Shad Tappe, Brent Eidenschink, Joe Winterfeldt Moorhead: Justin Howland, Casey Gibson WHN: T.J. Bemidji beat Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 43-15 and Alexandria 65-9 before falling to Hibbing 33-30. Triple winners for the Jacks on the week were Joe Anderson, Greg Skerik, and Brent Mason. Hibbing won six straight from 135-171 and held on for the victory in a match that started at 130. Nyhus pinned Mistic and Vitali came off of his back twice to get an overtime win over Ken Schmidt in key matches.
Crookston stomped Fosston/Bagley 51-22 with Wes Hanson, Mark Keller, Isaac Perala, Joey Perreault, Elliott Steinbrink, Jordan Reese, and Vince Gonzales recording pins. Jim Perreault beat Matt Olson 6-2 and Joey Palmer claimed a forfeit. The Brawlers got pins from Murphy and Janssen, a major from Matt Jacobs, and decisions from Essig and Halberg.
WHAN fell to Roseau 72-9 with Rausch and Zubke the only winners, Zubke nipping Lisell 4-3 with three third period points. The Wolves handled the Brawlers 45-34 in a match wrestled at Nevis winning eight matches. Rausch, closing in on Terry Storm's career victory mark, had a pin as did Phil Kako, Tom Leaper, and Jeff Woodford. Brent Crow won 6-2 and the Wolves received three forfeits. The Brawlers got pins from Cymbaluk, Janssen, Murphy, and Olson, one forfeit, and a major decision from Gluth.
Park Rapids fell to DL 59-14 as Ty Safratowich beat Shad Tappe 9-0, Mike Swensn won 11-2 and Ramsey Miller racked up a pin. At the Sertoma duals the Panthers lost five times, the closest a 34-33 loss to Larimore. Safratowich had his toughest match of the year against Minot battling back to win 4-3 up a weight versus Shawn Wallace. Safratowich led the Panthers at 5-0, Joe Leacox and Ramsey Miller were 4-1, and Mike Swenson and Bryan Pelawa 3-2. Isaac Zoller, Lee Branstrom, and Cody Boysen were also winners.
Fergus Falls beat Pelican Rapids 46-16 with Kip Anderson, Tony Heintzleman, Jake Johnson, and Chris Nelson winning for the Vikings. Fertile-Beltrami beat DGF 36-34 winning seven straight matches from 119-152. Evan Ranz, Mike Kraft, Jason Bakke, Jered Gunnufson, Steve Swanson, Jered Gunnufson, and Eric Lindberg won in that stretch. Tim Fuchs had a pin to help overcome DGF falls by Jordan Bjorhus, Jeff England, Jeremiah Enger, Max Hanft, and John Dosch and a major by Davey Kosen. Moorhead used six pins to get a 36-32 win in a 6-8 match split with Lake Park-Audubon.
Frazee beat Perham 49-15 losing only four matches; to Tyler Doll, Joe Werner, Eric Carr, and Phil Moenkedick. Brent Newling beat Ken Moenkedick in double overtime in the closest match but Kerry Lockrem also nipped Pete Kratzke 5-4. Andy Quittschreiber, Adam Aho, Gabe Dretsch, Mike Kleinschmidt, and Justin Olson earned falls while Kelly Jahnke and Isaac Ratz had the technical variety. Bake Bristlin won a decision.
Menahga/Sebeka won the Lake Park Tourny with 201.5 points to 194 for Barnesville and 191 for Fergus Falls. Mahnomen/Waubun, DGF, Pelican Rapids, Fosston/Bagley, LPA, and WAO trailed. Scott Ahlf, Joe Hendrickson, and Josh Schindeldecker claimed Warrior titles while Austin Rife, Jordan Anderson, and Justin Cox took second.
Pelican Rapids had Chris Nelson win the 189 pound crown while Tony Heinzelman and Jordon Arntson were runnerups. Jake Johnson placed third, Kip Anderson fourth, Art Escobar fifth and Martin Escobar sixth.
Davey Kosen and Jeremiah Enger from DGF won titles as did Bob Button, Brendan Krupich, and Mike Cox from Barnesville. Mahnomen/Waubun had a pair of champs in Eric Hoban and Mark Bonagofsky with Fergus Falls claiming three titles.
Bemidji won their invitational by 30 points over GBMR with St Cloud Tech another 20 points back. Deer River/Northland, Roseau, Little Falls, Fertile-Beltrami, Aitkin, BCLB, and Nashwauk-Keewatin/Greenway trailed. The Lumberjacks put six in the finals winning three straight titles from 119-130 as Joe Anderson, Greg Skerik, and Joe Miller claimed crowns. Waylon Lindseth, Dan Trepanier, and Chris Miller finished second while Brent Mason, Chris Black, and Nick Mistic wrestled to third. Fourth places by Quentin Utley and Matt Siems gave the hosts eleven wrestlers in the top four.
The Gators had Gabe Mooney and Dane Hanson claim titles while Randy Brazier, Justin Stanislawski, and Josh Ingles fell in the finals. Josh Hall took third, Matt Duray, Travis Blumer, and Nick Sluka fourth, Kevin Johnson fifth and Ken Kjos sixth.
DRN won the big two with Derek Moehling and John Martin while Dan Essig and Evan Huotari fell in the finals. Dale Gullickson took third, Tim Bebeau and Zach Serfling fourth, and Cyrus Dorry fifth.
Lars Lisell won for the Rams with Issiah Hruby and Andy Prezekwas second. Brock Otto finished fourth, Noel Barrett and Matt Przekwas fifth, Tim Fugelberg, Tom Palmquist, Ivar Haakonson, Jake Waterworth and Max Krueger sixth.
The Falcons had Eric Lindberg second, Evan Ranz and Tim Fuchs third, Jered Gunnufson fourth, Andrew and Eric Petersen, Mike Kraft, and Jason Klimek fifth, and Steve Swanson sixth.
BCLB was led by champions Kaleb Young and Joseph Bechtold. Shawn Klein and Aaron Young both finished fourth while Kris Kolkin placed fifth.
Joe Facchinni led the Spartans with a second place, Jeremy Thurman and Andy Walsh fifth and Matt and Jerry Wright sixth.
Tech had three champions and Little Falls one.
Menahga/Sebeka defeated Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 38-29 by winning nine matches in spite of giving up two forfeits. Travis, Tyler, and Scott Ahlf, Austin Rife, Keith and Joel Hendrickson, Caleb Olson, Justin Cox, and Josh Schindeldecker all won.
GBMR beat Roseau 47-9 as only Fugelberg, Lisell, and Haakonson won. Andy P did not wrestle. Jar Hall took a forfeit at 145.
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton beat Pelican Rapids 37-33 in a 7-7 match split. Kosen, Bjorhus, Justin Fisher, JJ Holloway, Andy Heisinger, Enger, and Max Hanft were DGF winners. The Vikings had Heintzelman, Mitch and Jake Johnson, Milbeck, Arntson, Nelson, and Art Escobar win.
WDC beat NYM 32-28 as NYM won the lightest six weights and 171 while the big guys came through for the Wolverines. Four matches went into OT with Hotakainen nipping Steffens, Wegsheid slipping by young Hunke, P Hunke nipping Salo, and Uselman getting by Keskitalo.
TRF slipped by Crookston 38-35 on a 7-7 split winning 7 of the 8 matches from 112-152. Hanson won at 103, Perala at 145, and then the big five for the Pirates. The Prowlers had five pins and a major decision to get the win.
The Pirates pounded the Panthers of Park Rapids 42-15 aided by four forfeits. Bryan Pelawa, Mike Swenson, Ramsey Miller, and Tyler Safratowich were Panther winners. Cole Perry beat Joe Leacox 6-5 in the closest match.
Park Rapids fell to WDC 69-7 with Safratowich and Miller the lone winners. Vandermay slipped past Swenson 10-7 at 135 in the closest match.
