Academic All-State Wrestlers

This year's Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestling
Selections are dedicated to the memory of Steve King who recently
passed away. King was a 1989 First Team selection for the Guillotine's
Academic Honors. He won the Class A Hwt State tite, finished with a
perfect 39-0 record and compiled a 3.66 GPA. King wrestled for St.
Clair High School. King recorded a 166-20 career mark, with 119 pins
which was the state record for falls. He was selected as the top
wrestler by MN/USA Wrestling for 1989. He was the first Minnesota
wrestler to win both the Junior Greco-Roman and Freestyle Nationals.
The Guillotine is proud to present the Academic All-State
nominations for the 26th year. The Guillotine recognizes 118 wrestlers,
one of the larger classes in recent years. 57 schools submitted
nominations for this honor.
Our top wrestler this season is Adam Elseth, a senior, of
Albert Lea, who compiled a perfect 4.0 GPA and a perfect season;
winning the State with a final 46-0 record. Jason Finley of Lake City
won the State as well and finished with a 3.98 GPA to place second on
the 30 man first team.
There are 18 wrestlers with perfect 4.0 GPA's and six
wrestlers with undefeated records. We found that 50% of the wrestlers
had GPA's of 3.7 or better and there are eleven 2004 State Champions,
all placing on the first team. The seniors dominated the overall
nominations 77 to 40 and also placed 22 on the first team.
Mr. Minnesota Wrestler for 2004, Charlie Falck of Apple
Valley, had the most victories with 49. The undefeated wrestlers and
State Champions are; Elseth, Cory Harnitz, Josh Zabel, Mitch Vedders,
Joey Grasser, and Nate Matousek. Falck also leads the first teamers
with a total of four State Titles to his credit. Two wrestlers have two
titles on their resume; Harnitz and Matousek. Wrestlers reporting a
perfect 4.0 GPA are Elseth, Kevin Robling, Mitchell Pontrelli, Jacob
Bryce, Ryan Tongen, Billy Blumhoefer, Joseph Bechtold, Danny Hansen,
Ben Roff, Issac Klaehn, Greg Tambornino, Jeramy Rau, Luke Nelson, Kory
Graham, Aaron Breyfogle, Casey Boutain, Michael Vought and Jeremy
Fischer.
Cambridge-Isanti leads all the high schools with nine
wrestlers nominated and the most points overall. Minnewaska Area is
second with seven, followed by Apple Valley (six), St.
Michael-Albertville (five) and Dassel-Cokato (five). Yellow Medicine
East, Albert Lea and Goodhue each nominated four. Apple Valley placed
the most on the first team with three; Falck, Scott Nonini and Michael
Fessler. Albert Lea and Simley each placed two on the first team;
Elseth and Zach Hansen (Albert Lea), Nick Ryberg and Jeff Grosland
(Simley).
The Guillotine wishes to congratulate the First Team Honorees
and all of the nominees for a job well done. Each of the 30 wrestlers
on the first team receive certificates, a letter of recognition and a
complimentary copy of The Guillotine. Our appreciation goes out to the
wrestlers, their parents, their coaches and administration for
providing us with the information to make these selctions.

Academic All-State Wrestlers

Adam Elseth, 135, Albert Lea , 12th
Class AAA 135 pound State Champion, Adam Elseth is a three
time section champion and a three time state placewinner, winning the
gold medal this,his senior year. In 2002 he placed 3rd and in 2001 he
placed 2nd. He was named Big Nine All-Conference three times and is the
"Winningest Wrestler" in Albert Lea's history, with 160 victories. He
also holds the one-year takedown record in the Albert Lea program.His
career record is 160-26 and this season he achieved a perfect 46-0.
Adam is a two-time member of the National Honor Society with a 4.0 GPA.
His parents are Jeff and Denise Elseth. He was coached by Larry
Goodnature. Adam plans to wrestle in college and study business.

Jason Finley, 189, Lake City, 12th
Jason Finley, Class AA 189 pound State Champion for the Lake
City Tigers, was a two-time state participant, and two-time
All-Conference in wrestling and football. A senior, wrestling for coach
Douglas Vaith, Jason earned a varsity career record of 84-19. He holds
the school's single season record for falls with 24, and his match
record for this season is 40-2. Jason is the son of Dave and Pat
Finley. He was a team captain in football, wrestling and track. He
sports a 3.98 GPA, is a National Honor Society member, and was named
Kiwanis Student of the Month. He plans to attend a four year college
and play football or wrestle.

Cory Harnitz, 189, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial/Mankato
Loyola, 12th
Senior, two-time Class A State Champion, Cory Harnitz,
wrestled on the Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Mankato Loyola wrestling
team. He was a State Champ his sophomore year, but was injured his
junior year and came back to win the title in 2004. He was a three-time
section champion. He sports a varsity career record of 190-25, with a
stellar 41-0 season record. Cory has a 3.94 GPA and is a two-year
member of the National Honor Society. He is also a 2004 MWCA All-State
Academic Team member. He is a four-time Valley Conference champion and
a two-time Greco Roman All-American. Cory's parents are Detlef and
Sharon Harnitz. He was coached by Andre Harnitz.

Josh Zabel, 171, Rochester Mayo, 12th
With a perfect 41-0 season record, senior, Josh Zabel won the
Class AAA 171 pound championsip at State. He amassed an overall 144-50
career record. He is a six year letterwinner and voted captain two of
those years. He was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Coon Rapids and
Stewartville Invites. He was also a Christmas Tournament Champion and
was a Wellstone Memorial Scholar/Athlete Achievement Award winner at
the 2004 Clash. Josh is the son of Robert and Mona Zabel. He is a
member of the National Honor Society, sporting a GPA of 3.83. Dwight
Gingerich is his coach at Rochester Mayo High School.

Jared Schwanz, Hwt, St. James, 11th
Class A 275 pound State Champion, Jared Schwanz is a two-time
Section 3A champion with a 37-2 season record and a 76-20 varsity
career record. Wrestling for the Saint James Saints and coach Eugene
Hildebrandt, he was a 2004 South Central Conference and St. James
Classic Tourney Champion. In 2003 Jared placed 3rd in the Junior
Freestyle Tournament and 5th in the Junior Greco-Roman Tournament. He
has a 3.86 GPA and was selected to the 2004 MWCA All-State Academic
Team. His parents are Gerald and Jeanne Schwanz. He was also a 2-time
All South Central Conference first team member in football. Jared plans
to attend a four year college.

Kevin Robling, Hwt, Scott West, 12th
Kevin Robling, Scott West senior, 2004 State runner-up at
heavyweight, and 2003 State 5th placer, claims a 4.00 GPA and was a
Wellstone Memorial Scholar/Athlete Achievement Award winner at the 2004
Clash. He was a member of the 2003 MWCA Academic All-State Team. Kevin
wrestled for coach Darren Ripley and earned a season record of 38-10
and a career record of 90-25. He was a team captain not only for
wrestling, but also football and track. He won 2nd place in the 2003
State Christmas Tourney. In track Kevin was a 2003 state qualifier in
shotput. In football he was two-time All-Conference and Most Valuable
Offensive Lineman in the conference, and won numerous other awards,
including being selected as a participant for Minnesota's 30th High
School All-Star Footbal Classic. Tony and Claire Robling are his
parents. He is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to
attend South Dakota State University on a football scolarship to study
Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences.

Jared Oyster, 135, Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale, 12th
Jared Oyster has been a five-time State entrant, placing 3rd
as a junior and gaining the Class A 135 pound runner-up spot his senior
year. With a 42-2 season, and an outstanding 201-26 career record, he
is the all-time record holder for most wins at his Bertha-Hewitt
Verndale High School. He has claimed thirty tournament championships.
He was named to the 2004 MWCA Academic All State Team and the
All-Section Team in 2003 and '04. Jared's coach is Steve Techam and his
parents are Heidi and Robb Oyster. He is on the A Honor Roll and has
earned a 3.95 GPA. For future plans Jared states, "I plan on being a
missionary for two years following high school. Then I will attend
college somewhere when I return. I am undecided on my college choice."

Mitchell E Pontrelli, Hwt, St. Paul Johnson, 12th
Three-time State participant and two-time Section Champ,
Mitchell Pontrelli wrestled for the St. Paul Johnson Governors and
Coach Scott Dyer. Mitchell placed 5th in State as a junior and earned a
2nd place spot in this, his senior year at heavyweight. His season
record was 32-2 and his overall career record is 112-18, a 94.12%
winning record. He is the son of Dominic and Laurie Pontrelli. Twice he
was named to the All-State Team, and is a three time All-Conference
honoree. In football he was All-State Honorable Mention and two-time
All Conference. Mitchell comments, "Next year I'm going to attend South
Dakota State University to play football. I plan on majoring in either
Athletic Training or Physical Therapy."

Nick Rydberg, 215, Simley, 12th
Nick Rydberg set the school record for the most pins in one
season; 37. He has compiled an impressive 124-33 varsity career record
and was 45-3 on the season. He wrestled on the Simley High School
wrestling team which advanced to State and won the Consolation
Championship. Nick is a senior with a 3.93 GPA. He was a two-time
All-Conference and All-State football player. He finished runner-up at
the Christmas Tournament twice. He has earned a trip to State three
times. In 2003 he placed 5rd and in 2004 he won the Class AAA 215 pound
match for 3rd place. Scott and Tammie Rydberg are his parents.
According to his wrestling coach, Will Short, Nick is deciding between
St. Olaf and the University of Minnesota Duluth to play football.

Jeff Grosland, 140, Simley, 12th
Three-time State Placewinner and four-time Section Champ, Jeff
Grosland has a 158-51 varsity career record. He placed 6th at State in
2002 and '03 and moved up to the runner-up spot in 2004 at 140 pounds
in Class AAA. A team captain, he had a 34 -9 record this season, and
helped lead his Simley Spartans to a Consolation Championship finish in
the State team competition. Jeff is the son of Gary and Cathy Grosland.
A senior, he claims a 3.90 GPA. Coach Will Short states, "Jeff has
participated on the Cadet National Team for the State of Minnesota and
is planning on attending Concordia, Moorhead. He plans on pursuing a
medical career. "

Jason Stripling, 215, Minneota, 12th
With a 3.90 GPA, Jason Stripling is on the Minneota High
School Honor Roll and is an Excel Award recipient. He achieved 80
career wins for his wrestling team, with a 42-2 season record this, his
senior year. His coach is Joel Skillings and his parents are James and
Nancy Stripling. A Section 4A Champion, Stripling placed 3rd in State
at 215 pounds. He has the school record for most team points in a
season; 215. This season he was named Most Improved Wrestler. In 2003
he earned All-Conference honors in football, and Academic
All-Conference honors in 2002. His plans include college at SDSU and
majoring in Civil Engineering.

Tyler Tubbs, 145,
Chokio-Alberta/Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley, 12th
Two-time MWCA Academic All-State team member and two-time
Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler, Tyler Tubbs of the
Chokio-Alberta Clinton-Graceville wrestling team, is a senior with a
3.99 GPA. He was also an MWCA Scholarship recipient and is a member of
the National Honor Society as well as earning Academic All-State in
football. Tyler's parents are Terry and Sandy Tubbs. His wrestling
coach is Bruce Johnson. He is a three-time Class A Section 7 Champion
and two time State Placewinner, earning 4th in 2003 and third in 2004.
He won 30 and lost 3 matches this season and has compiled a 143-58
varsity career record. Tyler plans to attend Moorhead State University.

Jacob Bryce, 171, Minnewaska Area, 12th
Three-time Section 7AA Champion and four-time State
Participant, Jacob Bryce, has a career record of 151-35. This season he
won 43 and lost 2 matches wrestling at 171 pounds. As a sophomore he
placed 2nd in State, as a junior, he was a State Champion and in 2004
he placed 4th. Jacob is an Honor Student with a 4.00 GPA. He is a
four-time MWCA All-State Academic Gold Team member, a two-time MWCA
All-State Academic Team member and a two-time Guillotine Academic
All-State Wrestler. Jacob, the son of Alan and Pat Bryce was four-time
West Central All-Conference. He wrestled on the Minnewaska Area team
and his head wrestling coach is Wes Tessman. He has signed a national
letter of intent to attend and wrestle at NDSU.

Zach Molitor, 152, Cambridge-Isanti, 11th
Zach Molitor is a junior with a 3.67 GPA. He earned a 44-3
season record and a varsity career record of 119-48. He was a Section
Champ in 2004 and is a two-time State Placewinner, taking 4th in 2003
and earning the runner-up place on the winners' platform in 2004 at 152
pounds. Zach was North Suburban All-Conference the past two years and a
two-time Christmas Tournament Champion. He wrestles for the Cambridge
Isanti Bluejackets, coached by Neil Jennissen. He helped his 2004 team
become the State Runners-up. He is the son of Jay and Sue Molitor.

Russell Smith, 171, Owatonna, 11th
Russell Smith is a three-time State Qualifier and a two-time
Section 1AAA Champion. A junior, he has won the 2nd place position at
State the last two seasons. Now wrestling at 171 pounds, he enjoys a
106-21 varsity career record so far and a 39-5 season tally. Coach Scot
Davis comments, "four of those five losses were to the same guy, State
Champion Josh Zabel." Russell was a state entrant at 152 pounds in
2002. He has attained a 3.70 GPA. His future plans are to possibly
attend college or pursue the family business of working in the circus
or at fairs. His father is David "Cannonball" Smith and his mother is
Jean Smith.

Mitch Vedders, 171, Milaca, 12th
With a perfect 48-0 season record, Mitch Vedders helped lead
his Milaca wrestling team in advancing to State and as an individual
wrestler, won the Gold Medal at 171 pounds. Wrestling for Coach Randy
Zimmer, he posseses a 186-53 career record. He was a captain in both
football and wrestling. Mitch is a four-time State Qualifier and a
three-time State Placewinner, winning 3rd as a sophomore, 2nd as a
junior and 1st place his senior year. Owning a 3.40 GPA, he is a
two-time member of the National Honor Society and the MWCA Academic
All-State Team. His future plans include attending Bethel College
concentrating on Youth Ministry.

Bryar Johnson, 215, Litchfield, 12th
Bryar Johnson led his Litchfield Dragons in making a State
appearance as a team the last three years where his team won the State
title in 2003 and the consolation championship this year. He is a
three-time State participant and a 2004 Section 5AA Champion. He placed
4th in State at 215 pounds. Team captain, Bryar is a senior and his
parents are Bruce and Barb Johnson. Accomplishments include 3X
All-Conference, and MWCA Academic All-State. Bryar is also a standout
in football and baseball. Bryar sports a 3.91 GPA and is #16 in a class
of 168 students. Bryar's coach, Chip Rankin states, "Bryar plans on
attending Northern State University on a football scholarship.
Currently he also plans on wrestling. He plans on majoring in biology
and chemistry and being a Field Research Specialist of Fish and
Wildlife."

Jayson Ness, 119, Bloomington Kennedy, 11th
Sally and Jay Ness can be proud of their son, Jayson. A
junior, Jayson has a 114-14 career record and a 40-2 season record. He
has achieved many accomplishments in wrestling, including three-time
Section Champ, three-time State placewinner, 3rd in 2002, State
Champion in 2003 and 2nd in 2004; 2002 Cadet of the Year/Freestyle
National champion; 3rd in Greco Roman Nationals; 2003 Junior of the
Year/3rd in National Freestyle and 2nd in Greco Roman Nationals;
Christmas Tournament Outstanding Wrestler; three-time All Conference;
two-time Kennedy OW, three-time Kennedy MVW, and team captain. Jayson
has a 3.67 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society and
Student Government and is in the top ten % of his class. Coach Charles
Vavrosky is looking forward to having Jayson back for another year.

Joey Grasser, 119, LeCenter/Cleveland, 12th
State Champion, Joey Grasser, is a two-time Section Champion
with an awesome 40-0 season record. His varsity career score is 131-16.
He has a 3.45 GPA. He is a member of the Student Council; was
vice-president last year and presently the president. A senior, he is a
wrestling team captain, holds the school record for takedowns, winning
the award for most takedowns in 2002, '03 and '04, and holds the school
record for no losses in a season. He's a three-time All Conference in
wrestling. In football he was All Conference in addition to Academic
All-Conference and a 2003-04 captain. Joey is the son of Rich and Toni
Grasser and his wrestling coach was Kelly Block.

Scott Nonini, 103, Apple Valley, 12th
Section Champion and State Placewinner, Scott Nonini wrestled
for Jim Jackson at Apple Valley. He ended his high school career with
39 wins and 9 losses on the season and boasts an 85-18 varsity career
record. He won his way to third place this spring, at the MSHSL State
Tournament at 103 pounds and contributed to the Eagles State Team Title
as well. Richard and Nancy Nonini are Scott's parents. He has earned a
3.75 GPA and is a member of the MWCA Academic All-State Team and the
National Honor Society. He will be attending the University of
Wisconsin-Madison or MIT and studying Engineering.

John Grygelko, 189, St. Michael-Albertville, 12th
John Grygelko achieved a 41-8 season record and a 112-14
career record. He qualified for the State Tournament twice, placing 4th
this season at 189 pounds. He was a two-time Section Champ, two-time
9th Grade League State Champ and an All-Conference wrestler. A senior,
and honorary captain, he wrested for the St. Michael-Albertville
Knights and coach Gregg Greeno, John has earned a 3.92 GPA and is a
three-time member of the National Honor Society. He was named to the
2004 MWCA All-State Academic Team. He was All-Conference in football.
John is the son of Tom and Karen Grygelko. He plans to go to college
and study medicine.

Andrew Quittschreiber, 140, Frazee, 12th
Four-time State Placer and three-time Section Champion, Andrew
Quittschreiber has captained his Frazee wrestling team for three years.
He is a three-time letterwinner with a varsity career record of 165-24.
He earned 44 wins (with just 3 losses) for his team this season. This
year he took 3rd place at the State Tournament at 140 pounds and was a
member of the Hornets State Team. Andrew was a 2003 National
Greco-Roman All-American and two-time State Greco and one-time State
Freestyle Champ. A senior, Andrew has achieved a 3.68 GPA and is a
repeat Guillotine Academic All-State Wrestler. The MWCA named him to
the 2004 Academic All-State Team. James and Barbara Quittschreiber are
his parents and Clay Nagel was his coach.

Stephen Pilgram, 140, Annandale/Maple Lake, 12th
State Champion, Stephan Pilgram, has been wrestling on varsity
since eighth grade. He wrestled on the Annandale Maple Lake wrestling
team and for coach, Bruce Bartels. His career record reads 130-35 and
his season record is 35-1. Stephan was a two-time State Participant, a
five-time Wright County Conference placewinner, and five-time Section
5AA placewinner. As a freshman he won the MVW Team Award and again as a
junior and senior. In his junior season he had the 'Most Pins'
distinction. As a senior, Stephan won the Grant County Invite and the
Mora Invite along with the Section and State Tournaments. Michael and
Carrie Pilgram are his parents. He achieved a 3.47 GPA. He plans to
pursue athletic training at Minnesota State University Mankato.

Michael Fessler, 140, Apple Valley, 12th
Michael Fessler, son of Peter and Laurie Fessler, is a
four-time State Placewinner and a four-time Section 6AAA Champion. He
won the gold medal at State this year at 140 pounds. He has amassed a
175-9 varsity career record, scoring 42 wins and 3 losses in his senior
year. He contributed to the State Championship Apple Valley team with
Jim Jackson as his coach. He has a 3.39 GPA in the classroom. He is a
2004 member of the MWCA All-State Academic Team. He was a Cadet
All-American. Michael plans to wrestle at the college level, attending
Cal-State Bakersfield or the Naval Academy.

Zach Hansen, 103, Albert Lea, 11th
Junior, Zach Hansen is Big 9 All-Conference and a three sport
athlete, participating in football, wrestling and baseball. A member of
the National Honor Society, he earned a 3.89 GPA and helped his Albert
Lea team win the MWCA State Academic Team Championship two years
running. He also aided his team to a third place finish in the team
competition of the 2004 MSHSL State Tournament. Zach is the son of Jon
and Vickie Hansen. His coach is Larry Goodnature who will value his
return to wrestle another year. Zach won his section tournament and
placed 4th at State. He has a 65-19 varsity career record so far and
recorded a 40-8 tally for the season.

Ryan Tongen, 103, Yellow Medicine East, 11th
Coach Gary Wolf will be happy to have Ryan Tongen back for
another season. He boasts a 35-6 season record as a junior, and a 49-7
career record. He has won most of the tournaments he has competed in.
He was a Jaycee State champion as a fifth grader and a sixth grader. He
was also a NYWA runner-up in sixth grade and a champion in 8th grade.
This year, he was 212 Conference Champion, Section 3AA Champion and won
5th place at the State Tournament at 103 pounds. Ryan has been on the
Superior Honor Roll every quarter since he started school. He has a
stunning 4.00 GPA, and is a National Honor Society member at Yellow
Medicine East. His proud parents are Connie and Duane Tongen from
Granite Falls.

Ryan Cross, 189, Faribault, 12th
Ryan Cross, two-time team captain ended his career with a 34-3
season performance and an 84-26 career record. He is a two-time Big
Nine All-Conference wrestler, two-time OW at the Dick Shiels Invite,
and two-time Most Valuable Wrestler Award recipient on his Faribault
High School wrestling team, coached by Jesse Armbruster. A three-time
section placer, this year he advanced to State and finished 4th. Ryan
is a Gold Cord recipiant, "A" Honor Roll student, was a member of the
Student Council as a junior, and was a four-time letter winner in band,
pep band, and orchestra. A three-sport athlete, he was All-Conference
in football and team captain of football, wrestling (2X) and baseball.
Ryan is the son of Paul and Judy Cross and says, "I plan on attending
the University of Wisconsin at Stout to play football and look into
graduate school after that."

Charlie Falck, 119, Apple Valley, 12th
A four-time State Champion, Apple Valley's Charlie Falck
achieved an outstanding 213-11 career record and was 49-2 on the
season. He was a Cadet Freestyle National Champion and runner-up,
Junior National Freestyle runner-up, was selected to the U.S. Dream
Team and the prestigious Dapper Dan Tournament. He was named High
School All-American and was a two-time Christmas Tournament Champion,
plus numerous other high school tournaments. He was an important part
of the Eagles State Championship Teams and was named Mr. Minnesota
Wrestler by the MWCA this year. Charlie is the son of Bob and Kay
Falck. He earned a 3.25 GPA. He was coached by Jim Jackson. His future
includes attending the University of Iowa on a wrestlig scholarship.

Nate Matousek, 152, Glencoe-Silver Lake, 11th
Two-time State Champion, Nate Matousek, Glencoe Silver Lake
High School junior, will be welcomed back for another year of wrestling
by Coach Kelly Lipinski. Nate is a five-time State Entrant, placing 5th
as an eighth grader. He has many accomplishments in wrestling
&endash; Career record of 198-13, with 99 career pins; this
season's perfect record of 44-0; State Christmas Tournament Champion:
five-time Wright County All-Conference; four-time 5AA Section Champion;
MVP for GSL for four years, three year team captain; Cadet National
Champion in Freestyle and Greco-Roman. Nate has earned a 3.30 GPA and
was selected to the 2004 MWCA Academic All-State Team. He played
'running back' for the GSL State Championship football team in 2003.
Mike and Linda Matousek are his parents. Nate's future plans are to
wrestle in a Division I school.

Adam Shemon, 119, Hastings, 11th
Hastings High School's Adam Shemon is a junior with a 3.84
GPA. He is a member of the National Honor Society and a two-time
selection to the 3AAA Section All-Academic Team. He has a 68-30 career
record so far, and a 38-8 tally on the season. He is a two-time All
Conference, two-time Conference and Section Champion, and a two-time
State Participant, placing 4th this year at the State Tournament. He
participated in the Christmas Tournament where he placed 7th. He will
be welcomed back next year by Coach Paul Vaith and is the son of Glenn
and Rhonda Shemon. The Naval Academy or the Air Force Academy may be in
Adam's future plans.
