Lyle Freudenberg won his 400th career match on Saturday as the
Foley wrestling team earned a share of first place in the Foley
Duals. For now.
The Falcons and Pierz battled to a 29-29 tie in the championship
match, but a new rule in the tie-breaking procedure in a dual meet
tournament was unclear. A call to the Minnesota State High School
League will be made on Monday to determine if Foley and Pierz will be
co-champions or if Pierz will be declared the champion on the sixth
criteria according to the National Federation rules.
The Falcons, ranked No. 12 in Class 2A, advanced to the
championship by beating Rocori 57-6 in the quarterfinals and
fourth-ranked Hibbing 30-27 in the semifinals. The win over Rocori
was the 400th of Freudenberg's career.
Pierz, which is ranked No. 2 in Class A, reached the championship
with a 51-22 win over Parkers Prairie and a 63-16 decision over
Becker, which competed in the Class 2A state tournament last
year.
