Central Minnesota Mat Rats Report January 25, 2005 By Roger Mischke |
1. The Pioneers of Pierz continue to roll over their foes despite missing several of their wrestlers. The have topped Section 6A foes Mille Lacs 45-24, Holdingford 58-10 and Royalton 67-9. The Pioneers also have big wins over AA foes Aitkin 38-24, Mora 53-21 and PLPRB 71-6. The Pioneers topped the field of teams at the Bluejacket Duals with wins over North Branch 51-18, Centennial 42-20 and in the championship over host Cambridge-Isanti 30-28. Jon Andres won his 100th career match and he was unbeaten at the Duals. Hank Virnig, Kyle Bednar, Chuck Boser and Kyle Girtz were unbeaten at the Bluejacket Duals.
2. The Eagles of New York Mills have convincing wins over Park Region Conference and Section 7A foes Ottertail Central 69-12, Menagha-Sebeka 64-10 and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 53-18. They have two big wins over AA school Thief River Falls 39-28 and Park Rapids 69-3.
3. The Falcons of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City have continued to get stronger with some huge wins over Section 4A teams Wabasso 34-28, River Valley 37-29 and MACCRAY 42-24. The topped AAA foe Willmar 41-22 and AA foes New London-Spicer 50-16 and Sartell 63-12. The Falcons had a very impressive outing as they topped the field of teams at the 212 Conference tourney by placing eleven wrestlers in the top four and earning 213.5 points. Conference championships were won by Ben Meyer, Adam Hoeper, Jason Losing, Aaron Rouser and Nic Liether. Seconds were earned by Spencer Lund, Eric Peterson and Matt Liether. They also earned a trio of thirds by Bill Wheeler, A. J. Frederickson and Josh Lies.
4. The Bullets of Wheaton-Herman/Norcross have topped Section 7A foes Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 42-31, Menagha-Sebeka 69-6, Osakis 47-27 and West Central Area. The Bullets had a strong showing at the Minnewaska duals by earning third place with wins over Mille Lacs 56-18 and AAA foe Grand Rapids 35-33. They did drop a 40-19 dual to the championship team Foley. Casey Gray, T. J. Severance and Cody Rinke were all 3-0 at the Minnewaska duals.
5. The Raiders of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale have gotten their lineup close now after the delayed start because of that football success. They have a pair of wins over Menagha-Sebeka 60-15 and Alexandria 41-28 and they did drop a dual to Section 7A rival Wheaton-Herman/Norcross 42-31. This dual was decided at 275. The Raiders lost to a very good Bemidji team 48-18 and to Section 7A favorites New York Mills 53-18.
6. The Eagles of Eden Valley-Watkins have topped Central Minnesota Conference foes Howard Lake/Lester Prairie 37-27 and Royalton 48-26. They have a win over Section 5A foe Trinity of Rivers Edge 48-18. The Eagles did lose to AAA St. Frances 62-12 and AA foes Glencoe-Silver Lake 55-26 and a close one to New London-Spicer 36-34.
7. The Bulldogs of Paynesville placed nine wrestlers in the top four of their own invitational tourney; this earned them third place with 174 points. Jordan Christian won the lone championship and Sean Glenz, Jack Mueller and Kevin Klein all earned seconds. Joe Sheridan, Keith Klein and Josh Tebben all claimed thirds and Neil Osendorf and Aaron Burris both took fourth. The Bulldogs dropped a West Central Conference dual to Sauk Centre 40-24.
8. The Raiders of Mille Lacs dropped a dual to Section 6A rival Pierz 45-24 and they dropped duals to highly regarded Milaca 67-7 and to Great River Conference rival Aitkin 51-20. The Raiders did top Zimmerman 45-27. The Raiders were short two of their top wrestlers at the Minnewaska duals where they dropped three duals to a very good AA Foley 60-16, Wheaton-Herman/Norcross 56-18 and to Breckenridge 42-30. Nolan Boucher and Jon Odle were both 3-0 a the Minnewaska Duals.
9. The Scorpions of Howard Lake/Waverly/Winsted/Lester Prairie topped Section 5A foe Trinity of Rivers Edge 58-17 and lost a very good dual to Section 5A and Central Minnesota Conference foe Eden Valley-Watkins 37-27. The Scorpions made a very impressive showing at the Minnesota Christian Athletic Assoc. Tournament by placing nine wrestlers in the finals and winning the tourney with 176 points. The Scorpions had six championships by Shane Khan, Ryan Miller, Steve Bobrowske, Tyler Kloos, Jason Latzke and Alex Schlueter. Earning seconds were Clark Ostvig, Harrison Kusslke and Mychal Penanz.
10. The Braves of Benson topped West Central Conference foe Morris Area/Hancock 56-16, CACG 58-18 and Parkers Prairie 42-25. The Braves did drop a dual to West Central Conference rival Minnewaska 57-12. They had a solid performance at the Benson tourney with 224.5 points and they placed ten wrestlers in the top four. Winning championship for the Braves were Brad Plumhoff, Brady Lee, Brendon Berens, Scott Thompson and Abe Miller. Kevin Wersinger, Paul Carruth and Wade Miller all earned seconds and Mason Aschman and Paul Syverson both earned thirds.
11. The Royals of 2005 of the coop of Royalton and Upsula topped Central Minnesota Conference foes Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 42-30 and Rockford 48-17 and PLPRB 41-32. They lost to Central Minnesota foes Pierz 67-9 and Eden Valley-Watkins 48-26.
12. The Cowboys of Breckenridge topped Moorhead in dual meet action 39-30 and they claimed fifth with their young squad at the Minnewaska duals. They topped the Mille Lacs 42-30 and they lost to Grand Rapids 50-18 and Minnewaska 49-20 in a very good dual.
13. The Fighting Saints of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg topped LQPV 58-18 in dual meet action. They dropped a pair of duals to Section 4A rivals Canby 52-7 and Dawson-Boyd 45-20. The Fighting Saints earned fifth place at the 212 Conference tourney with 136.5 points. They had seven wrestlers place in the top four including three championships by Kevin Steinhaus, Darrin Carlson and Josh Wentzel. Kordell Van Heuveln earned a second place and they had a trio of fourths by Chris Braaten, Jeremy Merrill and Mitchell Hagen.
CLASS AA
1. The Knights of Saint Michael-Albertville topped Rum River Conference rival Foley 42-9. They were to have wrestled Mound-Westonka and compete in the Hutchinson tourney but it was weathered out.
2. The Wolves of Milaca topped Rum River Conference foes Princeton 74-0 and North Branch 44-15 and Class A rival Mille Lacs 67-7. The Wolves topped the field of eight teams at the Stillwater Duals with impressive wins over Somerset, Wis. 69-9, New Prague 48-16 and Oscola, Wis. 35-29 (No. 5 Class 2A). John Fradette, Chuick LaMee, Torin Erickson, Dan Crain, Steve Vedders and Andy Peterson were all unbeaten at the Stillwater Duals.
3. The Falcons of Foley did drop a Rum River Conference dual to No. 1AA Saint Michael-Albertville 42-9. They topped Zimmerman 49-19, St. Cloud Apollo 61-14 and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 50-18. The Falcons topped the field at the Minnewaska Duals with wins over Mille Lacs 60-16, Wheaton-Herman/Norcross 40-19 and Minnewaska in an excellent championship dual 31-30. Jake Bowland, Zach Rajkowski, Greg Stumvoll, Mike Fouquette and Kyle Henry were all unbeaten at the Minnewaska Duals.
4. The Lakers of Minnewaska topped West Central Conference foes Sauk Centre 42-27, New London-Spicer 55-13, Benson 57-12 and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 61-6. The Lakers took second at their Dual meet invitational; missing two regulars they were able to top Breckenridge 49-20 and Grand Rapids 37-25. They lost a very good dual to Foley 31-30. Joe Swartz, Taylor Jergenson, Cody Pahan and Alan Lutterman were all unbeaten at the Minnewaska Duals.
5. The Warriors of BOLD topped Section 5AA rival Litchfield 32-30 and they dropped a very close dual to Wabasso 29-23. The Warriors earned 191.5 points and placed ten wrestlers in the top four at the 212 Conference tourney. Bailey Rettman and Tom Elfering won championships and Mark Revier, Pat LeVasseuer both earned seconds. Chris Harmon, Cole Neubauer, Nick Bauman and Trent Squibb all earned thirds and Brian Hagen and Mark Petig both took fourths.
6. The Dragons of Litchfield dropped a pair very close duals to Section 5AA foe BOLD 32-30 and Wabasso 32-29. They topped Wright County Conference foes Becker 49-14 and Annadale/Maple Lake 58-9.
7. The Mainstreeters of Sauk Centre topped West Central Conference foes Paynesville 40-24 and Melrose 45-27. They also topped AAA Alexandria 36-25 and Mora 38-24. They dropped a dual to West Central Conference and Section 7AA foe Minnewaska 42-27. The Mainstreeters earned second place at the Staples duals with wins over PLPRB 45-28 and Ottertail Central 47-24 before dropping a very close dual to Section 7AA foe Perham 32-29 in the championship. Jake Uphus, Brian Bielke, Jozy Olson, Zach Winter and Kurt Haakinson were all unbeaten at the Staples Duals.
8. The Gobblers of Aitkin have had some really impressive outings with wins over a good AAA Little Falls 41-24 and St. Cloud Apollo 76-3. They topped Staples-Motley 48-18 and Crosby-Ironton 71-8. The Gobblers crushed Great River Conference foe Mille Lacs 51-20. They lost to a highly regarded Pierz team 38-24. The Gobblers had a very impressive showing at the Skip Nalan Tourney. They placed ten wrestlers in the top three and scored 204.5 points to earn the championship over the No. 5 AA ranked Roseau. B. J. Wasserzieher won the lone championship and Justin Chouanard, Johnathon Arness and A. J. Hartshorn all earned seconds. The Gobblers came back to earn six third places by Andrew Shavinsky, Korey Tibbetts, Trevor Sterling, Travis Halberg, Phillip Just and Brad Insley.
9. The Hornets of Big Lake topped Section 6AA foe Rocori 38-22 and Rum River Conference foe North Branch 42-24. The Hornets crushed Rogers 78-6.
10. The Sting of Yellow Medicine topped 212 foe MACCRAY 48-23. The Sting earned third place at the 212 Conference tourney with 174 points and with eleven wrestlers placing in the top four. Chad Listul and Blaine Weber won championships and Ryan Tongen and Tom Jacobson both earned seconds. Matt Williams, Eric Dubbelde and Jordan Stock all took thirds and Tanner Aus, Wyatt Sand, Spenser Sannerud and Tom Palm all took fourths for the Sting.
11. The Spartans of Rocori topped Section 6AA foes Becker 42-24 and Albany 45-24. They also topped AAA North Branch 44-24 and St. Cloud Apollo 57-19. The Spartans dropped a dual to 6AA foe Big Lake 38-22.
12. The Bulldogs of Becker topped Braham 61-13, MCRA 38-29 and St. Cloud Apollo 56-24. The dropped a dual to Section 6AA foe Rocori 43-24 and two Wright County Conference duals to Litchfield 49-14 and Watertown-Mayer 36-28.
13. The Wildcats of New London-Spicer topped Sartell 53-24 and Eden Valley-Watkins 36-34. They dropped a pair of West Central Conference duals to Montevideo 41-40 and Minnewaska 55-13. They lost duals to No. 5A ACGC 50-15, AAA Willmar 44-27, Glencoe-Silver Lake 40-25 and No. 5AAA St. Francis 48-18.
14. The Lightning of Annandale/Maple Lake won the Osakis Duals with wins over Melrose 59-14, Osakis 48-19 and Albany 47-26. Ben Anderson, Joe Nordlie, Jake Anderson, Nick Clemence and Pete Nordlie were all unbeaten at the Osakis duals. They dropped a Wright County Conference dual to Litchfield 58-9.
15. The Huskies topped West Central Conference for Melrose 43-24 and dropped a dual to Section 6AA rival Rocori 45-24. At the Osakis duals they earned second place with wins Browerville/Eagle Valley 43-28 and PLPRB 53-24. They dropped the championship to Annandale/Maple Lake 47-26. Scott Schlangen, Brad Maciejewski and Matt Dowell were all unbeaten at the Osakis Duals.
CLASS AAA
1. The Flyers of Little Falls topped two Section 8AAA and Central Lakes Conference foes with wins over St. Cloud Tech 53-20 and St. Cloud Apollo 69-12. They did drop a dual to a very good Aitkin team 41-24. The Flyers went 3-1 to earn second place at the Detroit Lakes Duals with wins over Detroit Lakes 39-35, Thief River Falls 38-32 and Ottertail Central 50-21. The lost to No. 4A Greenbush-Middle River-Badger 40-33. Jason Brill, Ted Wilczek, Troy Biermaier and Brandon Freudenrich were all unbeaten at the Detroit Lakes Duals and Jacob Goebel was 3-1 on the day.
2. The Warriors of Brainerd topped Section 8AAA and Central Lakes Conference foe Alexandria 37-18. The Warriors took second place at the St. Croix Falls tourney with 226.5 points. They placed eleven wrestlers in the top four including four championships by Andrew Wachsmuth, Tyler Jensen, Kyle Dukowitz and Adam Hahnert. Nate Rubin and Grant Jaeche both earned seconds and Clinton Strother took third place. Four Warriors claimed fourths; Josh Virnig, Nick Edwards, Ryan McKay and Jake Patnode.
3. The Cardinals of Willmar topped Central Lakes Conference foes Alexandria 39-27 and Sartell 58-6. They also topped rivals New London-Spicer 44-27 and KMS 37-30. The Cards fell to No. 5A Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 41-22.
4. The Storm of Sauk Rapids topped two Central Lakes Conference foes St. Cloud Tech 41-24 and Sartell 54-12. They crushed Braham 46-15 and Hinckley-Finlayson 77-6. The Storm had a good outing at the Kimball Duals where they earned second with wins over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 60-21 and Kimball 54-24 before dropping the championship to Minnetonka 40-22. Mike Hines and Wes Voight were both unbeaten at the Kimball Duals. The Storm placed twelve wrestlers in the top four and scored 233 points to claim the championship at the Minnehaha Tourney. Six championships were won by Mitch Rau, Wes Voigt, Wade Cruser, Chris Allen, Chris Frenette and Derek Lass. Mike Hines, Zach Rudolph and Paul Borresch all earned seconds. Shane Fesenmaier and Mitch Stanger were both third and Tyler Spizka earned fourth place. Tyler's weights had three returning state tourney wrestlers.
5. The Vikings of North Branch dropped duals to Big Lake 44-24, Rocori 38-22 and Milaca 44-15. The Vikings took fifth place at the Cambridge Duals with a win over Rush City 60-15. They drop duals to No. 3A Pierz 51-18 and Centennial 41-27. Jeremy Bergerson and Zachary Backus were both unbeaten at the Cambridge Duals.
6. The Cardinals of Alexandria dropped a pair of Central Lakes Conference duals to Brainerd 37-18 and Willmar 39-27. They topped Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 61-24 and lost to some very good teams; Section 8AAA foe Bemidji 51-16, Sauk Centre 36-25 and Bertha Hewitt/Verndale 41-28.
7. The Bison of Buffalo have been battling sickness and injuries as of late. They have dropped duals to Cambridge 60-3 and at the Owatonna Duals they topped Rochester Century 48-38 before losing to Adrain 59-5, Hutchinson 45-27, Coon Rapids 45-27 and NRHEG 42-21. All would have been very close duals with a healthy lineup. Derek Klatt was unbeaten 5-0 at the Owatonna Duals.
8. The Tigers of St. Cloud Tech dropped a pair of duals in Central Lakes Conference action to Sauk Rapids 41-24 and to Little Falls 53-20. The Tigers were sixth at the Kiffmeyer Duals with a win over St. Cloud Apollo 56-22. They lost a very close dual to Elk River 35-34 and No. 3AAA Albert Lea 49-15. Derrik Orth, Andy Johnston and Paul Denne were all unbeaten at the Kiffmeyer Duals.
9. The Wildcats of Chisago Lakes topped Princeton 57-12 and Rush City 41-25. At the Centennial Duals they drop duals Spring Lake Park 39-36, Maple Grove 45-23, Centennial 53-22 and Shakopee 43-33. Bobby Ferrier and Luke Anderson were both unbeaten at the Centennial Duals and Troy Montague, Adam Germuenden and Dan Germuenden were 3-1 on the day.
10. The Eagles of St. Cloud Apollo topped Zimmerman and they dropped duals to Little Falls 69-12, Aitkin 76-3, Rocori 57-19, Becker 56-24 and Foley 61-14. At the Kiffmeyer duals they dropped duals to Hastings 67-9, Elk Rive 66-6 and St. Cloud Tech 56-22. Mike Abrego was unbeaten at the Kiffmeyer Duals.
11. The Tigers of Princeton dropped duals to Milaca 74-0 and Mille Lacs 52-20. The Tigers had a good showing at the Monticello tourney with six wrestlers placing in the top four Derek Fay and Matt Jensen both earned seconds and Nick Pletier, Dustin Isaacs, Brad Aasen and Chad Burkholder all earned thirds.
