The Pioneers of Pierz have finally got a lineup pretty much set as shown with huge wins over AA foe Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 58-9 and two other ranked AA foes Litchfield 43-18 and Detroit Lakes 49-18. They topped Section 6A foes Braham 61-5
and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 62-16. The Pioneers crushed Howard Lake/Waverly/Winsted/Lester Prairie 57-9. The Pioneers appeared ready to make a run at defending their class A title.
The Eagles of New York Mills topped AA foes Wadena-Deer Creek 47-18, Pequot Lakes/Pine River/Backus 63-9 and Walker/Hackensack/Akley 50-21. The Eagles dominated the Park Region Conference when nine wrestlers earned their way to the finals. The Eagles claimed five championships and they had three come back to earn third places for a total of twelve wrestlers placing in the top three. They scored a massive 250 points. Jason Burg, Tim Wegscheid, Brent Weller, Cody Salo and Brandon Marsh all won titles. Earning seconds were Tyler Wegscheid, Jeramie Weller, Jared Hotakainen and Devlin Hessig. Those that earned thirds were Jessie Bauck, Zac Hintzman and Brendon Frost.
The Falcons of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City seem to continue to improve with wins over 212 foes BOLD 31-21 (No. 1 Seed Section 5AA), Yellow Medicine East 39-18 (No. 2 Seed Section 3AA) and Renville County West 60-3. There are some people that still doubt the Falcons power. They topped Paynesville 42-9 (No. 2 Seed Section 6A), Eden Valley-Watkins 49-14 (No. 2 Seed Section 5A), Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 72-3 and Section 5A foe Montgomery-Lonsdale 60-12. The Falcons topped the field of eight teams at the New London-Spicer tourney with 224 points and thirteen wrestlers placing in the top four and five championships. Ben Meyer, Adam Hoeper, Jason Losing, Aaron Rouser and Nic Leither all won championships. Earning seconds were Bill Wheeler, A. J. Frederickson and Spencer Lund. Eric Larson, Eric Peterson and Matt Leither all earned thirds. They had a pair of fourths earned by Jared Peterson and Josh Lies.
The Bullets of Wheaton-Herman-Norcross topped North Dakota foes Lisbon 46-24 and Mayville 70-12. The Bullets topped section 7A foe Breckenridge 56-15. They did dropped a pair of duals to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 40-32 and to St. Michael-Albertville 49-18.
The Raiders of Bertha Hewitt/Verndale topped Section 7A rival 42-19 and lost to AA power St. Michael-Albertville 44-22, No. 7A Frazee 56-9 and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 33-5. They topped Park Region Conference and Section 7A foes Osakis and Browerville/Eagle Valley in dual meet action. The Raiders claimed second at the Park Region Conference tourney with 164.5 points. The young Raiders team had nine wrestlers in the top four. Matt Moenkedick won the championship at 112 and Ethan Kern, Jasper Oyster, Sam Moenkedick and Kevin Voeltz all earned seconds. Adam Wutzke and Josh Denny claimed thirds and Tony Schul and Aaron Moenkedick all earned fourths.
The Eagles of Eden Valley-Watkins topped Central Minnesota Conference foes Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 66-15 and Holdingford 43-28. The Eagles topped section 5A foe Montgomery-Lonsdale 62-16. They dropped duals to No. 5A Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 49-14 and to a young and fast improving Osakis team 33-30.
The Eagles had eight wrestlers place in the top four at the New London-Spicer tourney with 142 points. Eric Sullinger won the championship at 130 and Chris Faber, Nick Peterson and Phillip Magedanz all earned seconds. Paul Stommes earned third place and he had three falls to earn the fall award. Adam Hiltner, Jesse Saravia and Raymen Rice all were fourth.
The Bulldogs of Paynesville have improved a great deal over the season; starting the season with a young team. They topped MACCRAY 43-23, Kimball 66-12 and New London-Spicer 62-9 in dual meet action. The lost a very good dual to No. 7AA BOLD 34-26 and a very close one to AA Rocori 37-36. The Bulldogs did lose a well wrestled dual to No. 5A Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 42-9. They were 1-2 at their dual meet invitational with a win over a tough Milaca JV team 50-25. They lost AAA Hutchinson 37-29 and AA Lean and Mean Watertown-Mayer 37-21. Sean Glenz and Jack Mueller were both 3-0 at the duals.
The Raiders of Mille Lacs topped Section 6A foes Ogilvie 43-30, Rush City 42-22 and Holdingford 56-15. They also topped a good Class A MCRA 37-30 and a pair of AA schools Pequot Lakes/Pine River/Backus 42-22 and Crosby-Ironton 71-12. The Raiders earned second place at the Great River Conference with eleven wrestlers placing in the top four. Four Raiders claimed championship; Rob Olson, Tyler Walters, Nolan Boucher and Jon Odle. Nick Pfaff earned second and Joe Odle and Will Ellies both claimed thirds. They had four fourths by Danny Boucher, Pat Sullivan, Kyle Pirckett and Luke Gingery.
The Scorpions of Howard Lake/Waverly/Winsted/Lester Prairie topped Central Minnesota Conference foes Royalton 51-18, Holdingford 50-21, Rockford 50-17 and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 57-18. They also had huge wins over AA foes Lean and Mean Big Lake 31-31 (most matches) and over LeSueur-Henderson 34-27. The Scorpions earned second place at the Janesville tourney with nine wrestlers placing in the top four in this ten team field. Ryan Miller, Shane Kahn and Jason Latzke all won championships. Tyler Kloss earned a second and a trio of thirds were earned by Nick Selchow, Steve Bobrowksi and Alex Schlueter. Mychal Penaz and Clark Ostvig both took fourth. The Scorpions scored 139 points in what was a very solid performance.
The Braves of Benson have had a solid season; they turned in a very solid performance at the New London-Spicer tourney with eleven wrestlers placing in the top four and scoring 183 points to earn second place. Scott Thompson and Abe Miller won championships at 152 and 275. Paul Carruth, Paul Syverson and Wade Miller all earned seconds. The Braves had a trio of thirds and fourths by Brady Lee, Presto Flolo and Trent Lustfield earned thirds and Ryan Thompson, Brad Plumhoff and Brandon Berens all earned fourths. The Braves dropped duals to AA Yellow Medicine East 44-20 and Sauk Centre 59-17 and to No. 6A Canby 67-7.
The Cowboys of Breckenridge topped Section 7A foe Browerville/Eagle Valley 38-24, Staples-Motley 48-25, Ottertail Central, Lake Park-Audubon and Hawley in dual meet action. They lost duals to Saint Michael-Albertville 64-12, Barnesville 43-18, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 31-25 and to the Section 7A powers Wheaton-Herman/Norcross 56-16 and Bertha Hewitt/Verndale 42-19.
The Silverstreaks have had a very solid season with a young team. They have topped Park Region Conference and Section 7A foes Browerville/Eagle Valley 48-29, Ottertail Central 34-30, Menagha-Sebeka 63-12 and Parkers Prairie 40-28. They also have dual meet wins over Holdingford 48-23, Eden Valley-Watkins 33-30, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 48-20, Hawley 70-12 and Walker 50-20. They did drop duals to Annandale/Maple Lake 48-18 and to the Section 7A powers of Wheaton-Herman/Norcross 47-27 and Bertha Hewitt/Verndale 54-24. The Silverstreaks had seven wrestlers place in the top four at the Park Region Conference tourney and scored 127.5 points to earn fourth place. Eric Wiener, Michael Waldvogel and Chad Rodriquez all won championships. Bret Joarnt claimed third and claiming fourths were Derek Waldvogel, Todd Frie and Isaia Duchene. They had eight wrestlers place in the top four at the Albany tourney and they scored 119.5 points to earn fifth place. Eric Weiner and Chad Rodriquez won championships at 145 and 171 and Mike Waldvogel earn second place. A pair of thirds were earned by Isaia Duchene and Todd Frie and a trio of fourths by Bret Joarnt, Grant Allen and Orry Trisco.
CLASS AA
The Knights of Saint Michael-Albertville have topped Princeton 72-0, Dassel Cokato 52-6, Breckenridge 65-12, Bertha Hewitt/Verndale 44-22, Hawley 71-0, Wheaton-Herman/Norcross 49-18, Fergus Falls 45-19 and Mound-Westonka 51-13. They lost a good dual to AAA power Apple Valley 33-22. The Knights are gearing up to defend their titles of Section 4AA and State AA Champions.
The Wolves of Milaca continue to improve with wins over Rum River foes Big Lake 39-16 (No. 3 Seed Section 6AA) and Chisago Lakes 64-3. They topped the field at the Paynesville duals with wins over Watertown-Mayer 48-13 and Sauk Centre 46-12. Clinton Swenson, Chris Peterson, Chris Kragt, Steven Vedders and Andy Peterson were all unbeaten at the Paynesville duals. The Wolves lost dual to AAA power Cambridge-Isanti 35-29.
The Falcons of Foley have crushed 6AA foes Mora 53-16, Big Lake 59-7 and Becker 43-18. They have big wins over Forest Lake 37-22, Elk River 57-11 and Sauk Rapids 47-19. They lost two duals to AAA powers Anoka 43-19 and Little Falls 31-23.
The Warriors of BOLD have gotten their lineup settled finally and it shows with wins over Waconia 46-20, Annandale/Maple Lake 33-22, Montevideo 50-21, Sibley East 39-21, Dawson-Boyd, Renville County West and Paynesville 34-26. They lost a very good dual to No. 5A Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 21-31.
The Lakers of Minnewaska have been on a roll with huge wins over Sauk Centre 47-21 for the West Central Conference dual meet title and Staples-Motley 51-19. They topped defending 7AA champions Perham in a very exciting dual 30-30 (Criteria most first points scored). The Lakers topped the field of teams at the Big Ole tourney in Alexandria with ten placing in the top four. Joe Swartz, Sam Goracke, Cody Pahan and Alan Lutterman won championships. They earned a trio of seconds by Colin Cihlar, Tyler Jorgenson and Justin Frederick and a trio of thirds by Cass Kretlow, Trevor Larson and Jason Anderson.
The Dragons of Litchfield topped Delano 62-12, Willmar 37-28, Braham 60-12 and highly ranked AA Detroit Lakes 38-23. They did lose duals to No. 1 Pierz 43-18 and Section 5AA rival Watertown-Mayer 34-24. The Dragons once again have gotten a lineup set after using many wrestlers on the varsity level.
The Gobblers of Aitkin topped Great River Conference foes Hinckley-Finlayson 69-4 and Rush City 61-6. The Gobblers topped the field at the Great River Conference tourney with all fourteen wrestlers placing in the top four. They won seven championships; by Andrew Shavinsky, Trevor Sterling, B. J. Wasserzieher, Matt Christensen, Travis Halberg, Johnathon Arness and Brad Insley. Also in the finals and earning seconds were A. J. Hartshorn, Korey Tibbets, Jason Oestreich and Brett Mlyner. The Gobblers Phillip Just and Nick Nadeau both earned thirds and Justin Chouanard earn fourth place.
The Hornets of Big Lake topped Mound-Westonka 38-30, Rockford and Section 6AA rival Mora/Pine City 37-29. They lost duals to No. 1 6AA seed Milaca 39-16 and to the No. 2 6AA seed Foley 59-7. The Hornets lost a very close match to Howard Lake/Waverly/Winsted-Lester Prairie on criteria 31-31.
The Mainstreeters of Sauk Centre topped Section 7AA foe Morris Area/Hancock 62-12, Parkers Prairie 49-21, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 59-20 and Benson 59-17. They did drop a dual to No. 6A Canby 40-20. The Mainstreeters will be a challenge for anyone come section dual meet time.
The Sting of Yellow Medicine East topped Dawson-Boyd 34-31, Ortonville 55-15, River Valley 34-31 and Benson 44-20. They did drop duals to No. 5A ACGC 39-18, No. 7A Wabasso 52-10. The Sting had five wrestlers place in the top four at the Plum Creek tourney and they scored 109 points to earned fourth in this ten team event. Landon Cole won a championship and Ryan Tongen, Chad Listul and Spenser Sannerud earned seconds and Blaine Weber claimed fourth place.
The Spartans of Rocori defeated Central Lakes foes Sauk Rapids 42-25 and Willmar 37-24. The Spartans topped the field at the Kimball quadrangular with wins over Kimball 55-12, MACCRAY 44-18 and in a very good dual Paynesville 37-36. They had six wrestlers place in the top four at the Big Ole tourney in Alexandria to earned fifth place with 93.5 points. Grant Johnson won the championship at 130 and Kyle Schroeder earned second place. Matt Toren, Tyler Hommerding and Darren Massmann all claimed thirds. The Spartans should be a challenge for anyone in Section 6AA dual meet action.
The Bulldogs of Becker topped Wright County Conference foes Annandale/Maple Lake 42-17 and Dassel Cokato 39-25. The also defeated Sauk Rapids 35-30 in a very good dual and Buffalo 47-21. They dropped a very close dual to Section 2AAA favorites Eden Prairie 32-31 and they lost to No. 2 6AA Seed Foley 43-18 and No. 2 8AAA seed Little Falls 37-26. The Bulldogs topped the field at the Albany tourney with a great team effort. They placed seven wrestlers in the top four and earned 189.5 points. Robert Koranda, Russ Lumley, Mike Rittenour (Fall Award Winner) and Mike Hopkins all won championships at 119, 135, 160 and 215. Kevin O'Brien earned second, Brandon Backes earned third place and Jeremy Nelson earned fourth place.
CLASS AAA
The Flyers of Little Falls topped Central Lakes Conference and Section 8AAA foes Alexandria 50-18, Sauk Rapids 49-17 and Brainerd 36-26 for the Dual Meet Title of the Central Lakes Conference. The Flyers also topped highly regard Foley 31-23 and AA Becker 37-26. Look for the Flyers to Challenge for Section 8AAA honors.
The Warriors of Brainerd topped Central Lakes foe St. Cloud Apollo 63-9 and rival Fergus Falls 48-18. They lost to the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in Section 8AAA Little Falls 36-26 and Bemidji 43-16. The Warriors had an impressive outing at the Elk River tourney placing twelve wrestlers in the top four to win the tourney with 210 points. Tyler Jensen, Nate Rubin, Josh Virnig and Kyle Dukowitz all won championships. Adam Hahnert earned second place and earning thirds were Scott Padrnas, Jake Patnode, Nick Edwards and Clinton Strother. Warriors earning fourths were Ryan McKay, Cody Hummel and Nick Lingwall.
The Cardinals of Willmar topped Sauk Rapids 44-18 and Alexandria and highly regarded Watertown-Mayer 34-24. They dropped a very well wrestled dual against No. 2 Seed Section 5AA Litchfield 37-28 and to Central Lakes rival Rocori 37-24. The Cards had an outstanding showing at The Big Ole in Alexandria with eight wrestlers placing in the top four to claim second place with 171 points. Peter Johnson, Tony Neuman and Ben Thonvold won championships at 140, 189 and 275. Jesse Alonzo had a great tourney; as he earned second place and three Cards claimed thirds; Drew Larson, Brady Gilb and Kyle Nelson. Jake Beyer earned a fourth place finish for the Cards.
The Storm of Sauk Rapids dropped duals to Central Lakes Conference duals to Rocori 42-25 and Willmar 44-18. They topped Central Lakes foe St. Cloud Apollo 49-24. They dropped three duals at the Foley Quadrangular; to Becker in a very good dual 35-30, Foley 47-19 and Little Falls 49-17. The Storm had a solid performance at the Purple Pride tourney in Albany with nine wrestlers placing in the top four where they scored 156 points to claim third place. Tyler Spizka and Mich Rau won championships at 125 and 130. Mike Hines and Wes Voigt both earned seconds at 112 and 145. A trio of Storm wrestlers claimed thirds; Chris Allen and Mitch Stanger and Chris Fernette. Paul Borresch and Shane Fesnmaier both earned fourths.
The Vikings of North Branch topped Section 7AAA and Rum River Conference foe Chisago Lakes 45-27, Braham 45-21 and Zimmerman 49-13.
The Bison of Buffalo had went thru a lot of injuries and sickness this season. They topped North Suburban Conference foe Irondale 44-24 and they dropped duals to Eden Prairie 36-28 and Becker 47-21. The Bison claimed fifth place with 127 points at the Mound-Westonka tourney.
The Tigers of St. Cloud Tech topped Central Lakes Conference foes Sartell 58-18 and Alexandria 46-24.
The Cardinals dropped a pair of Central Lakes Conference duals to St. Cloud Tech 46-24 and Little Falls 50-18. They dropped a dual to former Section 8AAA rival Fergus Falls 34-33. The Cardinals had six wrestlers place in the top four at the Big Ole the Alexandria invitational with 103 points. John Amundson won the championship at 112 and Damon Bullock earned a second place finish at 215. Josh Betterman earn third place and a trio of Cards claimed fourths Chris Hobbs, Nate Kelly and David Kirscht.
The Spuds of Moorhead topped Pelican Rapids 33-27 and they dropped duals to Fargo South 45-21 and Bemidji 51-11. The Spuds had an impressive showing at the Big Ole tourney in Alexandria where they placed five wrestlers in the top four. Jay Thoreson and Ryan Rodriquez won championships at 152 and 160. Jay won his 100th career match at the tourney. Justin Phillippi earned second place and Matt Langberg claimed third place and Beau Tweten was fourth.
The Eagles of St. Cloud Apollo dropped Central Lakes duals to Brainerd and Sauk Rapids. The Eagles had four place winners at the Purple Pride tourney in Albany to help earn them a sixth place with 93 points. Justin Pulliam earned second place at 130, Cam Jacobson also earned second at 135 and Brett Scharmer earned second at 160. Mike Abrego took third place at 275.
The Princeton Tigers had three duals since my last report and they dropped all three to St. Michael-Albertville, Dassel Cokato and Zimmerman.
