| The Guillotine 2006 Academic All-State
Wrestlers (First published in the May 10, 2006 issue of The Guillotine Newsmagazine.) The 2006 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features 30 first team members, 30 second team members, and 61 honorable mention wrestlers. Wrestlers were submitted on nomination forms signed by their coach and principal verifying their current GPA (minimum 3.0), number of current season varsity matches wrestled (min. 15), current season win percentage (min. 60%) and grade (junior or senior). Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, current state tournament placement and cumulative high school GPA. Each of the first team wrestlers receive two certificates and a letter of recognition. This year’s top Academic All-State wrestler spot goes to senior Matt Leither of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City. Matt capped his high school career with the Class A 189-pound state title and a perfect 4.00 GPA. Matt scored a 538 out of a possible 549 on his All-State Wrestler nomination. Not far behind Leither was senior Kenny Moenkedick of Perham with a score of 535. Moenkedick was the Class AA 171 pound state champion. He finished his season with an impressive 43-0 record. Everyone on the first team placed sixth or higher at state this year, including nine champions and eight runner-ups. First team members have an average season win percentage of 91%, an average of over 39 season wins, and an average GPA of 3.69. Seven nominees had a perfect 4.0 GPA and all seven made our first or second team: Brent Eidenschink of Detroit Lakes, Calvin Ryan of Goodhue, Matt Baarson of Champlin Park, Ross Neubauer of BOLD/Buffalo Lake-Hector, Beau Hansen of Albert Lea, Peter DeMarais of Trinity, and Matt Leither of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City. Five nominees finished as undefeated 2006 state champions and all five made our first team: Zach Sanders of Wabasha-Kellogg, Nick Henning of Fulda/Murray County Central, Travis Elg of Windom Area/Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin, Kenny Moenkedick of Perham, and Torrey Line of Browerville/Eagle Valley. Repeat first team members are Evan Hacker of Canby, Brent Eidenschink of Detroit Lakes, Kirby Anderson of Menahga/Sebeka, Michael Wubbena of Fairmont, and Alex Meger of Owatonna. Albert Lea Area had the most first or second team members with five. They were followed by St. Michael-Albertville with three. Austin/Austin Pacelli, Barnesville, Frazee, Fulda/Murray County Central, Grand Meadow/Kingsland/LeRoy-Ostrander, Menahga/Sebeka, Owatonna, Perham, and Trinity at River Ridge each had two first or second team members. Congratulations to all nominees and thanks to the coaches, administrators and parents for helping The Guillotine recognize some of Minnesota’s finest student-athletes. |

Matt
Leither, 189 lbs.Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, 12th Matt finished his senior season
with a 38-8 record and a 189 pound State championship. Matt is an Eagle
Scout with a cumulative GPA of 4.0, a member of the National
Honor Society, and has won Falcon Awards and Triple A Awards. He plans
to wrestle in college, but is undecided as to which school he will
attend. Matt is the son of Jim and Doree, and was coached by Tim Roberg.

Kenny Moenkedick,
171 lbs.Perham, 12th Kenny is a two-time All-Conference wrestler who finished his high school career with a 3.92 GPA, a 164-53 record and a State title. Kenny was coached by Robb Moser. He plans to pursue an engineering degree at NDSU and eventually coach high school wrestling. This 171-pounder also went undefeated on the season. Kenny’s parents are Andy and Kathy. |
Joseph Murphy, 125 lbs.Trinity at River Ridge, 11th Joseph only lost one match enroute to earning the 125-pound state title. A three-time State placewinner, Joseph has four All-Conference awards, including an award for the “2006 Outstanding Conference Wrestler” on his resume, and is a two-year captain. With a varsity career record of 157-18 so far, and a GPA of 3.8, Joseph plans to go to college and is seriously considering wrestling. He is the son of Pat and Lee Ann, and is coached by his father. |
Brent Eidenschink, 189 lbs.Detroit Lakes, 12th Brent plans to wrestle at the U of M and become a teacher and coach. The son of Dean and Sue, and coached by Rob Ullgot, Brent finished his high school career with a 4.0 GPA and a 165-27 varsity record. He went 36-1 his senior season, placing second in State. Brent is a two-time MWCA Academic All-State, All-American in Greco and freestyle, a member of the National Honor Society, and All-State in football. |
Matt
Burns, 140 lbs.Watertown-Mayer, 12th Matt carries a 3.99 GPA. He is planning on attending college, with a look towards pre-medicine. Among Matt’s achievements are, MWCA Academic All-State team, National Honor Society Vice President, Business Professionals of America President, multiple times Academic All-Conference in track and cross country, cross country State team member, and a second place finish this year in State wrestling at 140 pounds. He is the son of Pat and Margaret Burns and was coached by Joe Traen. |
Brandon Greiner, 160
lbs.Madelia/Truman, 12th Brandon finished his varsity career with a 172-55 record and a second place finish in State at 160. He earned 16 varsity letters, including six in wrestling, three in football, three in baseball, and four in track, and was named All-Conference in all four sports. In the future, Brandon plans to study mathematics and secondary education at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse where he will play football and baseball. He has a 3.96 GPA. Brandon was coached by Wayne Kronemann and his parents are Rick and Vickie. |
Zach Sanders, 112 lbs.Wabasha-Kellogg, 11th Zach won his fourth State title this year and finished undefeated with 47 wins. He is a Cadet National Champion in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman, a Junior All-American in Freestyle and Greco, and a Junior National Champion. Zach carries a 3.6 GPA into his senior year and in the future, would like to wrestle at a D-1 school. The son of Ron and Elizabeth, Zach’s career varsity record stands at 179-5. |
Evan
Hacker, Hwt lbs.Canby, 12th Evan takes a 3.87 GPA and first and third place finishes in State into the near future where he plans to wrestle at NDSU and major in engineering. A National Honor Society member, Triple A Award winner, and football Academic All-State, Evan finished his senior season with a 47-2 record and was 114 -21 for his career. He is the son of Loren and Karen and was coached by Perry Fink. |
David
Hauge, 160 lbs.Minnehaha Acad./Concordia Acad., 12th Six-year wrestling letterman, and team captain, David also was a football captain and four-year letter winner in football. He is a National Honor Society member who placed third in State this year at 160. He has a 3.96 GPA.The son of Dan and Laurie Hauge, David was coached by Jimmy Moulsoff. He went 36-3 as a senior and finished his varsity career at 147-46. |
Andy Johnston, 135 lbs.St. Cloud Tech, 12th Andy plans to study civil engineering at a four-year college and wrestle. A second place finish this year compliments his 39-4 record, 3.74 GPA. Andy is a three-time All-Conference, five-year letter winner in wrestling, three-year letter winner in football and a member of the National Honor society. He was coached by David Schorn and is the son of Faith and Chris Johnston. |
Beau Hansen, 130 lbs.Albert Lea Area, 11th Beau placed fourth in State this year as a junior. He carries a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the State Academic Team Championships three years in a row. He is also a member of the National Honor Society. The son of Jon and Vickie Hansen, Beau was coached by Larry Goodnature. He had a 43-9 season this year and is 83-41 for his career. |
Ben
Anderson, 135 lbs.Frazee, 11th Ben plans to wrestle in college and earn a degree in law. He is a student council member, National Honor Society member, is on the Youth Advisory Committee, and has earned varsity letters from ‘02-’06. He is the son of Curt and Jane Anderson and is coached by John Barland. Ben went 42-6 this year, earning a third place finish at State. He is 140-43 overall and has a 3.73 GPA. |
Eric
Wiener, 152 lbs.Osakis, 12th Eric plans to attend a college that has an engineering program and will possibly wrestle. He has a 132-49 career varsity record to his name, along with two State places. Fifth in 2005, and third this year with a 35-6 record. Eric is a two-year captain and two-time team most valuable wrestler who holds the school record for most falls in a season and is tied for most career falls. He is also a Science Olympiad State Champion with a 3.8 GPA. Eric is the son of Alphonse and Anne Weiner and was coached by Brad Hoffarth. |
Michael Wubbena, 152
lbs.Fairmont, 12th Mike is a five-time State placer who finished his high school career with a 41-1 record this year, and 201 varsity wins overall. A three-time All-Conference in football, Cadet and Junior National Dual Team member, Greco State champion, two-time freestyle State champion, and two-time State qualifier in track, Mike has been on the Honor Roll since seventh grade. He is the son of Dave and Kim Wubbena and was coached by Tom Kuisle. Mike plans to play football and wrestle at Augustana and major in business, with a sports management minor. |
Brady
Schneeberger,130 lbs., West Central Area/Ashby, 12th Brady ended his career with a 40-5 record and a State title at 130. He also placed second as both a junior and a sophomore and earned 184 varsity wins overall. The son of Dean and Gail Schneeberger, Brady carries a 3.38 GPA and plans to wrestle in college. He placed sixth last year at the National High School Coaches Association Junior Nationals. Brady was coached by Randy Denardo. |
Kirby
Anderson, 119 lbs.Menahga/Sebeka, 12th Kirby keeps a 3.87 GPA and finished his varsity career at 111-16. He plans to attend the University of Minnesota-Duluth or St. Olaf and pursue a career in pharmacy. The son of Bret and LaRue Anderson, Kirby is a three-time State place winner, finishing 3rd, 3rd, and 4th as a soph, junior, and senior, respectively. He placed 8th at the Senior Nationals this year, and is a three-time Conference and Section champ. Kirby was coached by Kris Koll. |
Nick
Henning, 189 lbs.Fulda/Murray County Central, 12th A member of the National Honor Society, Nick is a 2006 State Champ, going 42-0 on the season. Nick has a 3.33 GPA and plans to get a business degree and possibly wrestle and play football in college. He is the son of Dave and Nan Henning and was coached by Dan Blankenship. Nick is a three-time All-Conference in both wrestling and football who finished with a 141-55 career record and three JCC championships. |
Travis Elg, 140 lbs.Windom Area/Mt. Lake/Butterfield-Odin, 12th Three-time State champ and five-time placer Travis Elg added 42 wins to his career varsity record for a final mark of 193-11. A football and wrestling captain who earned All-Conference honors in both sports, Travis also carries a 3.33 GPA. He plans to wrestle in college and become an agricultural engineer. An MWCA All-State and four-year member of FFA, Travis is the son of David and Paula Elg and was coached by his father. He went undefeated as a freshman and a senior and only lost three matches after 8th grade. |
Jared Knips, HwtJackson County Central, 12th Jared was coached by Randy Baker and is the son of Dale and Jan Knips. Jared is a three-time All-Conference selection, four-time Section placewinner and finished his varsity career with a 114-44. This includes a senior mark of 41-4 and the State heavyweight championship. He also has a 3.29 GPA. |
Torrey
Line, 171 lbs.Browerville/Eagle Valley, 11th 171-pound State champ Torrey Line is a five-time Section champion, five time All-Conference in wrestling and two-time football All-Conference. He is a Greco National champ and has also placed 3rd and 5th in freestyle. Coached by Andy Lancaster, Torrey is the son of Kimberly and Michael Line. He plans to wrestle at a Division 1 school in the future and possibly the Olympics or the Worlds. Torrey went undefeated this year and has a GPA of 3.25. |
Rickey
Peterson, 160 lbs.Minneota, 12th Rickey plans to wrestle at a four-year university next year and minor in art - major as of yet undecided. A two-year team captain, Rickey has a 161-45 career varsity record and went 42-3 in this, his senior year, to place third at State. The son of Rick and Rosemary, he was coached by Joel Skillings. Among Rickey’s honors are MWCA Academic All-State, Hardest Worker and Most Valuable Teammate awards, and All-Conference in wrestling. He has a 3.57 GPA. |
Alex Meger, 119 lbs.Owatonna, 12th Three-time State placer Alex Meger placed 7th at the Senior High School Nationals in Pittsburgh to become an All-American. He is a National Honor Society member who finishes his career with a 3.55 GPA and a 199-33 record. Alex is the son of Glen and Cheryl Meger and was coached by Scot Davis. He earned MWCA Academic honors the last two years. Alex went 41-6 in his final campaign and plans to wrestle in college. |
Kirk Anderson, 125 lbs.Barnesville, 11th Two-time State champion Kirk Anderson is a five-time State entrant and a four-time placer. He went 38-1 this year and has a career record of 200-16. The son of Sandy and Mark Anderson, he is coached by Art Meyer. Kirk is on the student council, the A Honor Roll, and is a member of the National Honor Society. He plans to attend a four year school but is undecided as to his future major. |
Mickey
Kirk, 152 lbs.St. Michael-Albertville, 12th The son of Gene and LInda Kirk, Mickey was coached by Gregg Greeno. Mickey is a five-time Section champ who ended his senior year with a 37-10 record and a 2nd place finish in State. He has a 3.46 GPA and a 158-64 career varsity record. Mickey was All-Conference in football and is the 2nd all-time tackler in STMA history. He plans to attend a four-year school and possibly pursue video editing. |
Landon
Peppel, 130 lbs.Barnesville, 11th Landon is an ‘A’ Honor Roll student and All-Conference wrestler who carries a 3.44 GPA and placed 2nd in State this year at 130 pounds. He is the son of Chuck and Debbie Peppel and is coached by Art Meyer. Landon finished his season at 38-6 and has a career varsity record of 87-25. In the future he plans to attend NDSU and major in engineering. |
John Vaith, 140 lbs.Hastings, 11th John placed 4th in State this year and went 43-7. He is a three-time class president and has been on the ‘A’ Honor Roll since 9th grade. The son of Paul and Jill Vaith, John is also coached by his father. He is a wrestling and cross country captain and a three-time State entrant who is a team leader in wins, tech falls, majors, and near falls. John plans to continue to excel in high school for one more year before going on to college. |
Joe Grygelko, 135 lbs.St. Michael-Albertville, 11th Four-time Section champ Joe Grygelko is also a three time placer at State with finishes of 4th, 3rd, and 2nd the past three years, respectively. 44-4 on the season, Joe is 172-28 overall with his senior year left. He also was a Cadet Greco All-American last summer. The son of Tom and Karen Grygelko, Joe is coached by Gregg Greeno. He plans to stay involved in wrestling when he gets to college, and has a 3.37 GPA. |
John
Sundgren, 140 lbs.Blaine, 12th John overcame a broken thumb in the second week of wrestling, only to break his leg in January. With a swimming and weightlifting routine he developed himself, John returned in time to qualify for State by placing 2nd in Sections. He pinned the #1 ranked wrestler at 140 in the semi’s enroute to claiming second in State, his third appearance there, having previously placed 2nd as a sophomore and 5th as a junior. John has a 142-32 career varsity record, with only 15 matches his senior year. He also has a 3.66 GPA and plans to wrestle in college. He is the son of Jim and Kathy Sundgren and was coached by Tom Luck. |
Matt
Baarson, 130 lbs.Champlin Park, 11th Matt is a member of the National Honor Society and finished his junior year with a record of 38-8 and a 6th place finish in State. He is also an All-Conference wrestler with a GPA of 4.0249. He is the son of Peg and Gary Lusian and Craig Baarson, and is coached by Bill Maresh. Matt plans to continue wrestling at the collegiate level after graduating next year. |
Zach McGinnis, 135 lbs.Albert Lea Area, 11th Zach is a two-time State Tournament entrant, placing 5th as a sophomore and 5th again this year as a junior. The son of Jon and Kristin McGinnis, Zach is a three-year member of the State Academic Team Championship, and in the National Honor Society. Zach finished his season at 35-9, and has an 83-28 career varsity record. He is coached by Larry Goodnature and carries a 3.83 GPA. |
