From St. Cloud Times Newspaper Letters to the Editor:
METRO WRESTLING DESERVES MORE COVERAGE
This is hard to write, for I try to stay positive in my views. But, it’s time.
Many have voiced their displeasure with the local wrestling coverage to me and ask if I could call the Times. I told them, “Hang in there, it will get better.”
Well, after seven years, it hasn’t. So now, it’s time to voice my frustrations with the leadership of the Times sports department.
What broke the camel’s back was when the Times again choose not to attend the Kiffmeyer Duals at Tech. This is an extremely big event in the wrestling community as eight teams came together (Jan. 14) to wrestle at Tech. Five teams were ranked in the state while two were even ranked in the nation. Some 35 wrestlers also were ranked in the state of Minnesota.
The Times was not there. In fact, after I called in they wrote a small summary of the duals on page 7 the next day. It’s been seven years since the Times has covered this dual and it’s been six years since a Times reporter has even been to a wrestling match in St. Cloud.
That’s sad, for this paper is, as stated in your mission statement, “for the towns of Waite Park, St. Cloud and Sartell.”
The St. Cloud area wrestlers and their parents have put in countless hours working at their trade and they deserve the respect from the St. Cloud Times to be honored in the paper. The Times has been very discriminative towards wrestling and I can only hope with a new editor things will change.
It’s discomforting to write this letter, for the Times has excellent reporters and I realize it is not their fault. The change must come with the leadership of the sports department and the paper’s attitude in general regarding the sport of wrestling.
