Central Minnesota Mat Rats Report

The regular season is done and the Sections tourneys and the State tourney season is here. Coaches as you complete your seasons please send a short summary from your season; please include the following items if possible.
CLASS A REPORT
1. Pierz Pioneers
The Pioneers just keep getting better with each outing; They topped the field of teams at their quadrangular with a win over No. 8AA ranked Foley 39-22. They also topped a pair of section 6A foes Osakis 64-12 and Braham 57-12. Clint Poster, Ben Andres, Kyle Bednar, Warren Gall, Cody Luberts and Scott Saehr were all 3-0 in the quadrangular. The Pioneers topped two Section 6A foes over Crosby-Ironton 28-6 and Royalton 41-18. They took on the top team in the state No. 1AA ranked Saint Michael-Albertville and the No. 4AAA ranked Owatonna; they fell to both 40-15 and 47-24. The Pioneers completed their regular season with a pair of dual meet wins over Central Minnesota Conference foes Howard Lake-Waverly/Lester Prairie 49-18 and Belgrade-Brooten/Elrosa 56-12.
2. Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Falcons
The Falcons crushed their foes in the West Central South Conference tourney with 249 points and eight wrestlers gaining all conference status. Winning championships were Jeremy Anderson, Ben Meyer, A. J. Fredericksen, Nic Leither and Matt Leither. Taking seconds and all conference honors were Matt Pearson, Bill Wheeler and Micah Larson. Jared Peterson and Travis Fredericksen both took third and John Hoeper and Josh Lies both took fourth places. The Falcons topped three section 5A foes with wins over Trinity at Rivers Edge 59-10, BBE 54-16 and rival Eden Valley-Watkins in a very good dual 30-28. Jeremy Anderson, Ben Meyer, Bill Wheeler, Nic Liether and Matt Liether were all 3-0 at their quadrangular. The Falcons topped Section 5A Paynesville 48-13 and former 212 Conference foe MACCRAY 60-9. In non-conference dual meet action they topped New London-Spicer 39-14. The Falcons completed the regular season portion of their season with impressive wins over Section 5A foe Norwood Young America 61-12 and AA foe Watertown-Mayer 41-20.
3. Aitkin Gobblers
The Gobblers crushed former Section 7AA foes Staples-Motley 52-18 and Crosby-Ironton 56-15. In Great River Conference dual meet action they crushed Rush City 64-12 and Hinckley-Finlayson/Pine City 64-4 to win the Dual meet championship of the Great River Conference. The Gobblers topped the field of teams at the 48th annual Skip Nalan tourney in Grand Rapids with 194.5 points with eleven wrestlers placing in the top four. Justin Chournard, B. J. Wasserzeiher and Travis Halberg all won championships. Phillip Just and Nick Nadeau both earned seconds and earning thirds were Isaac Werner, Justin Dotzler, Brett Insley. Brett Mlynar and Keith Wasserzieher both took fourths. The Gobblers may have set a record for points scored at the Great River Conference Tourney with 279 points and thirteen wrestlers competing in the finals. They claimed eight Conference championships by Isaac Werner, Reece Thompson, Justin Chouanard, Phillip Just, B. J. Wasserzeiher, Justin Dotzler, Travis Halberg and Matt Christenson. Jason Oestreich, Keith Wasserzeiher, Brett Mlynar, Brad Inlsey and Nick Nadeau all earned seconds.
4. Yellow Medicine East Sting
The Sting had a solid showing at the West Central South Conference with 213.5 points to earn third place. They had all fourteen wrestlers place in the top four with Matt Williams and Casey Field both winning championships. Jordan Stock, Spenser Sannerud, Austin Cole and Cole Landon all earned seconds; thus eight wrestlers gaining All Conference Honors. Tim Palm, Tom Jacobson, Evan Stock, Eric Dubbelde, Nick Rolfing, Wyat Sand and Tanner Aus all claimed third places. Jordan Saffeney took fourth in a tremendous showing of good balance. They crushed two section 4A foes Dawson-Boyd 36-21 and Ortonville 58-12. The Sting claimed fifth place at the Anoka Duals with wins over Rosemount 45-17 and Sauk Rapids 42-18. Casey Field and Jordan Stock were both unbeaten at the Anoka duals. The Sting completed their regular season as they crushed the No. 7A ranked Wabasso 39-13 with ten wins over a very good team.
5. Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles
The Eagles continue to have a very good season with wins over Central Minnesota Conference foe Howard Lake/Waverly-Lester Prairie 41-11 and a solid AA team Watertown-Mayer 45-19. The Eagles were 2-1 at the ACGC quadrangular with wins over a pair of section 5A foes BBE 44-28 and Trinity 56-13. They dropped a very close dual to section rival Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 30-28. Dustin Kramer, Adam Hiltner, Paul Stommes, Raymen Rice and Phillip Magedanz were unbeaten. They crushed Central Minnesota Conference foe Holdingford 69-11.
6. Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines
The Wolverines topped section 7A rival New York Mills 49-21 and Staples Motley 52-24. They had a great showing at the Big Ole tourney in Alexandria where they scored 172.5 points just a half of point behind second place Moorhead and four points behind the leader Minnewaska. The Wolverines had nine wrestlers place in the top four including three championships by Shawn Beverluis, Ian Carlstrom and Trey VanOrsdel. Kevin Trout, Tony Wegscheid, Ian Carlstrom and Tim Richards all earned seconds. Tim Richards won his 100th career match in the semifinals with a fall. Tanner Rentz and Darin Folkestad both took third places. The Wolverines closeout the regular season with a dual against No. 4AA ranked Perham 51-18.
7. New York Mills Eagles
The Eagles have really been struggling with injuries and sickness the past few weeks. They did top Section 7A rival Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 43-28 in a very good dual and Pequot Lake/Pine River/Backus 54-19. They did drop a dual to section 7A foe Wadena-Deer Creek 49-21. The Eagles turned in a great performance to win the Park Region Conference tourney with 222.5 points and ten wrestlers placing in the top four. Jason Burg, Brandon Marsh, Devlin Hessig and Andrew Frost all won Conference championships and Jordan Novak, Jeremy Hagen and Brendan Frost all earned seconds. Jesse Bauck and Dan Malone both earned third place and Ken Tervola took fourth place. The Eagles competed their regular season with a near shutout of AA foe Walker-Hackensack-Ackley-Nevis 69-4.
8. Paynesville Bulldogs
The Bulldogs have been struggling with trying to get all their wrestlers on the mat at the same time. They did score 148.5 points at the West Central North Conference tourney despite missing two number 1 seeds and a number 2 seed. They had seven wrestlers place in the top three with Sean Glenz and Kevin Klein winning championships. Joey Sheridan, Jon Kerzman and Dan Utsch all earned seconds and Keith Klein and Jeff Albright both earned thirds. The Bulldogs claimed fifth place at their dual meet invitational with wins over Sauk Centre 41-32 and Watertown 41-36. They lost their quarterfinal match to AAA Grand Rapids 36-28. Sean Glenz, Dustin Utsch and Aaron Burris were all unbeaten at the Bulldog duals. They went unbeaten at the Rocori Quadrangular with wins over host Rocori 44-24, MACCRAY 52-19 and Kimball 70-3. Joe Sheridan, Keith Klein, Luke Frank, Jon Kerzman and Sean Glenz were all unbeaten at the Rocori Quadrangular.
9. Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale Raiders
The Raiders topped Park Region Conference foes Osakis 38-32 and Browerville/Eagle Valley 63-18. In a good dual they topped AAA Lean and Mean Alexandria 36-34 and lost to a Lean and Mean AAA Bemidji team 50-21. The Raiders topped Lean and Mean Detroit Lakes 45-36 and they dropped a dual to a good Long Prairie-Grey Eagle team 43-33. The Raiders scored 152 points at the Park Region Conference to earned third place with nine wrestlers placing in the top four. Ethan Kern, Jasper Oyster and Sam Moenkedick all won Conference Championships and Zac Lambert earned second place. Jake Braaten and Aaron Moenkedick both earned thirds and Wade Moenkedick, Tony Schul and Nick Harren all took fourths. The Raiders topped lean and mean Detroit Lakes 45-36 and dropped a close dual to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 43-33. They lost to No. 3A ranked Frazee in their final regular season dual 53-10. The Raiders earned third place with 152 points at the Morris tourney with nine wrestlers earning places in the top four. Ethan Kern, Jasper Oyster, Sam Moenkedick and Aaron Moenkedick all won championships and Zac Lambert and Jake Braaten both earned third places. Wade Moenkedick, Tony Schul and Nick Harren all took fourth places.
10. Osakis Silverstreaks
The Silverstreak topped section 6A foe Braham 46-24 and they dropped duals to No. 1A Pierz 64-12 and highly ranked Foley 46-24 at the Pierz quadrangular. Pat Barrett was 3-0 at the quadrangular. The Silverstreaks dropped a Park Region Conference dual to Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 38-32; this was an excellent dual. They lost to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle one of the top Section 7AA teams 45-26. The Silverstreaks topped BBE 39-34 in non-conference dual meet action. They had a great performance at the Park Region Conference to earn second place with 171 points. The had ten wrestlers place in the top four including one conference championship by Eric Wiener. Clinton Wiener, Patrick Barrett, Brett Joarnt and Jordan Trisco all earned seconds and Isaia Duchene, Mike Waldvogel, Jason Johnson and Wendell Larson all earned third places and Derek Waldvogel took fourth place. The Silverstreaks turned in a impressive performance at the Albany Purple Pride Tourney with 140 points and two championships by Pat Barrett and Eric Weiner. Pat won the fall award with 3 Falls in 5:26 and Eric was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tourney. Clinton Weiner really looked good as he earned second place and Derek Waldvogel, Jason Johnson and Mike Waldvogel all earned thirds and Matt Gavin took fourth place.
11. Wheaton-Herman/Norcross Bullets
The Bullets topped section 7A foes West Central Area 59-24 and CACGB 45-17. The Bullets won the Morris tourney with 192 points with eight wrestlers in the top four. Five Bullet wrestlers won championships including Brady Sykora, Shane Fickes, Brett Lennox, Jared Lennox and Tony Roeschlein. Nate Mord earned second place, John Doll took third place and Austin Nilson took fourth place. The Bullets topped three foes at the Cowboy Duals at Breckenridge with wins over host Breckenridge 36-25, LQPV 69-9 and Hawley 58-12. Brady Skora, Nate Mord, Ryan Schawgle, Shane Fickes, Brett Lennox and Jerod Lennox all were unbeaten at the Cowboy Duals.
12. Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Fighting Saints
The Fighting Saints have a very young team that has improved a great deal over the course of the season. The had a very good showing at the Camden Conference tourney with 164 points to earn third place. They had nine wrestlers place in the top four places with Spencer Almen and Kevin Steinhaus both winning championships. Brad Kneisl and Codey Kinney both earned seconds and Nick Dahl and Alex Baker both earned third places. Taking fourth place for the Fighting Saints were Tyler Carlson, Jeremy Peterson and Mitch Hagen. They topped Section 4A foe Benson 54-10 and CACGB 50-15, Kimball 61-7 and Royalton 48-21. The Fighting Saints had a very impressive showing at the Morris tourney where they earned second place with 181 points and eleven wrestlers placing in the top four. One championship by Brad Kneisl and five seconds by Mitchell Hagen, Alex Baker, Joel Bauman, Cody Kinney and Kevin Steinhaus. Spencer Almen and Nick Dahl both earned third places and Jeremy Peterson, Adam Wentzel and Aaron Zimmer all took fourth places.
Breckenridge Cowboys
The Cowboys had a solid showing at the Heart of Lakes tourney with 114.5 points and four wrestlers placing in the top four. Jesse Stuehrenberg, Jake Owens and Seth Klovstreich all earned third places and Andy Van Hecke claimed fourth place. The Cowboys were missing two of their best wrestlers for the tourney. The Cowboys topped OTC 41-33 in non-conference dual meet action. The Cowboys hosted their dual meet invitational and they topped two foes Browerville-Eagle Valley 46-24 and CACG 48-25. They did dropped a match to rival and Section 7A foe Wheaton-Herman/Norcross 36-25. Alex Johnson and Jesse Stuehrenberg were both unbeaten at the Cowboy Duals.
Browerville/Eagle Valley Broncos
The Broncos have been having a very good season with recent wins over section 6A foes Crosby-Ironton 50-25 and Osakis 34-24. In non-conference action they topped Hawley 45-20 and lost to Park Region Conference foe Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 63-18. The Broncos earned fourth place with 130 points at the Park Region Conference with five wrestlers placing in the top three. Torrey Line won a Conference championship and Grant Bentz and Tyler Spychalla both earned seconds. Julius Stone and Ryan Spandl both took third places. Torrey Line was named Co-Most Valuable Wrestler for the 2005-2006 Park Region Conference season. The Broncos topped Park Region Conference foe Menagha-Sebeka 48-34 and they lost to AA Staples-Motley 46-29. The Broncos closed out their regular season at the Cowboy duals with wins over LQPV 49-23 and CACG 43-25. They dropped a close dual to the host team Breckenridge 40-34. Tyler Spychalla, Brian Denny, Simeon Grenier, Torrey Line and Grant Bentz were unbeaten at the Cowboy duals.
CLASS AA REPORT
1. Saint Michael-Albertville Knights
The Knights continue to roll over their foes with wins over No. 2AA Milaca 42-18, Mississippi 8 Conference foes Buffalo 50-15, Princeton 74-0 and Mound-Westonka 64-3. The Knights hosted No. 1A Pierz and No. 4AAA Owatonna in a triangular and they topped both foes 40-15 and 38-16 in an excellent showing by the top team in Minnesota. The Knights topped Mississippi 8 Conference foe Cambridge-Isanti 52-6 to win the Mississippi 8 championship. They topped the field of teams at the Dassel Cokato Duals with wins over host Dassel Cokato 57-6, No. 8AAA Wayzata 52-14 and Lean and Mean AAA Centennial 56-9. The Knights have six wrestlers to unbeaten at the Charger Duals.
2. Milaca Wolves
The Wolves lost to No. 1AA Saint Michael-Albertville 42-18. The Wolves topped a pair of Section 6AA foes Big Lake 52-11 and Hinckley-Finlayson/Pine City 74-0. They turned in a very strong showing when they topped the field of teams at the Paynesville duals with wins over No. 4AA Perham for the Championship 33-19 and Grand Rapids in the semifinals 64-16 and Sauk Centre 66-4. Dan Crain, Steven Vedders, Zach Majerus, Josh Danger, Andy Peterson and Carter Ash all were 3-0 at the Paynesville duals. The Wolves completed their regular season with dual meet wins over Section 6AA foes Big Lake 52-11 and Hinckley-Finlayson/Pine City 74-0 and AAA St. Cloud Tech 75-3.
3. Little Falls Flyers
The Flyers just keep crushing their foes with big wins over Central Lakes Conference foes and lean and mean Alexandria 50-15 and Sauk Rapids 48-18. They topped highly ranked Foley 37-19 and in non-conference Zimmerman 60-14. The Lakers took championship honors at the Detroit Lakes Duals with big wins over Detroit Lakes 39-22 and Fergus Falls 66-6 before topping No. 6A ranked Greenbush-Middle River/Badger 41-28 for the championship. Ted Wilczek, Troy Biermeier, Chris Roach and Josh Bue all were 3-0 at the DL duals. They topped a pair of Central Lakes Conference foes Willmar 50-6 and Brainerd 53-18. The Flyers won the Central Lakes Conference Duals Championship with these two wins.
4. BOLD/Buffalo Lake/Hector Warriors
The Warriors won the West Central Conference Dual meet championship in a good dual over Minnewaska 34-23. They took second in the Individual Tourney of the West Central South Conference with 224 points. The Warriors had thirteen wrestlers place in the top four including championships by Cole Neubauer, Brian Hagen, Mark Revier and Ben Aaseth. Zach Kopel, Pat Lavassaur and Chris Harmon all earned seconds; thus all earning All Conference Honors. Alex Steffel, Ross Neubauer and Mark Pietig earned third places and Tom Brenner, Jon Kremer and Kyle Pietig all took fourth place for the Warriors. They had a very good performance with their third place finish at the Paynesville duals with wins over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 48-22 and Grand Rapids 41-21. They lost a very close dual to No. 4AA ranked Perham 30-26. Pat LaVasseur, Mark Pietig, Brian Hagen, Ben Aaseth were all unbeaten at the Paynesville duals. The Warriors completed their regular season with a big win over No. 7A ranked and rival Wabasso 35-27.
5. Foley Falcons
The Falcons continue to struggle with health and injury problems but have had some great performances in wins over Mora 45-18, Alexandria 62-7, Osakis 60-9 and Braham 60-5. They dropped duals to No. 3AA Little Falls 37-19 and to No. 1A Pierz 39-22. The Falcons topped the Lean and Mean AAA Alexandria 62-7 and they dropped a dual to the No. 3AA ranked Little Falls 37-19. The Falcons completed the regular season with big wins over non-conference foes North Branch 40-12 and Spring Lake Park 47-12 to finish at 25-7.
6. Litchfield Dragons
The Dragons topped section 5AA and Wright County Conference rivals Dassel Cokato 41-19 and Annandale/Maple Lake 30-24 for the Wright County Conference Championship. The Dragons completed their regular season with a big win over AAA Willmar 52-14.
7. Annandale/Maple Lake Lightning
The Lightning in a big match topped section 5AA and Wright County Conference foes Watertown-Mayer 39-27 and Delano 49-18. The Lightning dropped a very close dual to Litchfield in a dual for the Wright County Conference championship 30-24. The Cardinals complete their regular season schedule with a big win over Wright County Conference foe Delano 49-18.
8. Minnewaska Lakers
The Lakers won the West Central North Conference tourney with 204. 5 points and eleven wrestlers placing in the top four. Jon Tatro was named outstanding wrestler for his efforts with his win over Derek Pesta in the championship and Trevor Larson and Alan Lutterman both won championships. Sam Goracke, Dan Braataen and Shane Cowen all earned seconds; thus all earning All Conference Honors. Earning thirds were Justin Frederick, David Bond, Colin Jergenson and Alan Erickson. Jared Jordahl took fourth place and a note on Colin Cihlar had to withdraw from the tourney as he was sick prior to the tourney. The Lakers dropped the West Central North Conference Dual meet championship to No. 9AA BOLD 34-23. They topped West Central North foe Melrose 74-4 and Section 7AA foes Fergus Falls 49-13 and Staples-Motley 70-10. The Lakers drop a dual to No. 4AA ranked Perham and Section 7AA foe 41-21.
9. Big Lake Hornets
The Hornets in Mississippi 8 Conference action topped Monticello 32-20, with Big Lake winning nine matches. The did top section 6AA foes Zimmerman 56-8 and Hinckley-Finlayson/Pine City 66-6 and non-conference action they topped Mille Lacs 47-21. The Hornets lost to No. 2AA ranked and Section 6AA foe Milaca 52-11. The Hornets completed their regular season schedule with wins over Section 6AA rivals Becker 37-24 and Mora 44-30.
10. Becker Bulldogs
The Bulldogs lost a very good dual to Lean and Mean Cambridge 36-16 in Mississippi 8 Conference action. They did top Mississippi 8 foe Monticell0 32-20 and former Wright County Conference foes Watertown-Mayer 40-24 and Glencoe-Silver Lake 42-24. The Bulldogs topped Section 6AA Mora 35-31 and dropped a close dual to rival Section 6AA for Big Lake 37-24. The Bulldogs turned in a strong performance at the Albany “Purple Pride” Tourney with 161.5 points to earn second place. Kevin O’Brien, Robert Koranda, Russ Lumley and Mike Rittenour all won championships and Brady Schrupp and Clinton Aurentz both earned seconds and Josiah Lumley earned a third place.
11. New London-Spicer Wildcats
The Wildcats topped West Central North Conference foe Albany 39-19 and in non-conference action they defeated Renville County West 49-15. They had a strong showing at the West Central North Conference tourney with 181 points to earn second place with thirteen wrestlers placing in the top four. Chad Henle and Stephen Westby both won championships; thus earning All Conference Honors. Paul Peterson, Andre Blomker and Colin Ruter all earned third places. The Wildcats had eight wrestlers take fourth place including; Jon Nething, Adam Luberts, Tony Tobkin, Shawn Hatlestad, Luke Reiter, Billy Dean, Brandon Keller and Chris DeLong. The Wildcats had an impressive showing with 166.5 points to win the Albany tourney with nine wrestlers placing in the top four. Chad Henle and Stephen Westby both won championships and Paul Peterson, Adam Luberts and Chris Delong all earned seconds. Shawn Hatlestad and Luke Reiter both earend thirds and Brandon Keller took fourth place.
12. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Thunder
The Thunder had an impressive showing at the West Central North Conference with 173 points and six wrestlers earning All Conference Honors. Sam Schad, Brad Twardowski and Mitch Ainali all won championships and Dan Schad, Pat Jenkins and Derek Pesta all earned second places. Joe Pesta took third place and Levi Pray claimed fourth place. The Thunder dropped three duals at the Paynesville Duals to Bold 48-22, Watertown-Mayer 46-20 and to Sauk Centre 41-36. Derek Pesta and Dan Schad were both unbeaten at the Paynesville duals. The Thunder were without Sam Schad and Mitch Ainali. They topped Section 7AA foe Detroit Lakes 49-27 and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 44-33.
Howard Lake-Waverly/Lester Prairie Scorpions
The Scorpions topped Rockford in Central Minnesota Conference action 61-9 and Mound-Westonka in non-conference action 46-32. They did drop a dual to section 5aa foe Watertown-Mayer 40-19 and Central Minnesota Conference foe Eden Valley-Watkins 41-11. The Scorpions crushed Central Minnesota Conference foes Holdingford 51-28,Royalton 51-27 and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrsoa 45-21. The Scorpions dropped they final regular season dual to No. 1A ranked Pierz 49-18.
Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers
The Panthers lost to Wright County Conference and section 5AA foe Waconia 32-31 and to Shakopee 35-34. The Panthers topped Northfield 54-14. At the Swalla Duals at Kasson-Mantorville they topped AAA Rochester Mayo 41-24 and Zumbrota-Mazeppa 39-26. In the semifinals they dropped their dual to NRHEG 44-22 and in the third place match they lost to lean and mean Southland 41-22. Ryan Kriesch, Josh Jenson and Tyler Polzin were all unbeaten and Chris Dahlke was 3-1 at the Swalla Duals. They topped non-conference foes Benilde-St. Margaret's 46-23 and Hopkins 47-27. They dropped a pair of duals to Wright County Conference foe Watertown-Mayer 40-26 and former Wright County Conference foe Becker 43-24. The Panthers topped AAA Hopkins 47-27 to complete their regular season schedule.
CLASS AAA REPORT
1. Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets
The Bluejackets topped Mississippi 8 Conference foes Becker 36-16 in an excellent dual and Buffalo 47-14. They claimed third place at the White Bear Lake Duals with wins over Blaine 66-9 and White Bear Lake 28-25. They lost a very close match to Section 7AA foe Coon Rapids 30-22. Ross Dankers, Tony Nelson, Matt O’Connor and Forrest Becklin were all unbeaten at the White Bear Lake Duals. The Bluejackets topped Hutchinson 26-25 at the Blaine Duals and lost to Apple Valley 53-9 and to Section 7AAA foe Coon Rapids 34-28. Chad Larson was unbeaten at the Blaine duals. The Bluejackets dropped their regular season final to the No. 1AA ranked St. Michael-Albertville 52-6 in the Mississippi 8 Conference Championship.
2. Moorhead Spuds
The Spuds continue to have one of their best season in years with wins over Breckenridge 43-20,Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 47-16, Fargo South 38-26 and Pelican Rapids 53-13. This was the Spuds best dual meet season in recent years. They also had a great showing at the Big Ole tourney in Alexandria with 173.5 points to earn second place and just 4.5 points behind the leader. Justin LaValle, Bryan Rodriques, Jay Thoreson and Justin Phillippi all won championships. Mark Meis and Matt Langeberg both earned third places and Tyler Guhlke, Nathan Arends and Jake Handegard both took fourth places. This is the best tourney performance that I can recall for the Spuds since the hey days of the Ron Gadberry teams back in the 70’s and early 80’s. The Spuds completed their regular season schedule with a win over Thief River Falls 35-27 and they dropped a dual to Section 8AAA foe Bemidji 43-20.
3. Sauk Rapids Storm
The Storm topped Central Lakes Conference foes Sartell 55-9, St. Cloud Tech 61-9 and Fergus Falls 37-25. In a Section 8AAA dual meet action they topped Monticello 45-23, the Storm won nine matches. In non-conference action they topped Albany 46-24 and Zimmerman 59-6.
4. Buffalo Bison
The Bison topped Mound-Westonka 41-26, Eden Prairie 55-16 and Rogers. They lost to Mississippi foes STMA 47-15 and to Cambridge-Isanti 47-14. The Bison dropped a close dual to one of the Section 2AAA favorites Prior Lake 32-23. The Bison hard great showing at the Mound-Westonka with 217. 5 points and twelve wrestlers placing in the top four. David Baker, MattJeska, Derek Klatt and Eric Rogness all won championships and Justin Frank, Carter Vogt and Danny Maghrak all earned third places. A trio of thirds were earned by Brandon Ordorff, Ben Ruter and Taylor Vikc and EricStverm and Brad Abramowski both took fourths.
5. Willmar Cardinals
The Cardinals topped Central Lakes Conference foes Sartell 60-18, St. Cloud Apollo 50-20 and Fergus Falls 40-27. They dropped the Central Lakes Championship dual to Little Falls 50-6. In non-conference action they topped Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 60-18. The Cardinals scored 81.5 points at the Big Ole in Alexandria with four wrestlers placing in the top four. Trent Molacek earned second place and Brandt Haglund, Martin Munoz and Nick Braun all earned thirds. The Cardinals were without starters Jesse Alonzo, Drew Larson and Brady Gilb. The Cardinals closed out the regular season with a non-conference dual with No. 10AA ranked Litchfield on the short end 52-14.
6. Chisago Lakes Wildcats
The Wildcats topped Hinckley-Finlayson/Pine City 60-7, Mounds View 33-32, Rush City 62-12, Irondale 52-18 and Robbinsdale Cooper. They did lose in non-conference action to Henry Sibley 36-34.
7. Alexandria Cardinals
The Cardinals continue to struggle in their dual meets because they are unable to fill their weights. They lost to Bemidji 37-30, Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 36-34, Foley 62-7 and to Central Lakes Conference foe Little Falls 50-15. The Cardinals claimed fifth place at the Big Ole with 117.5 and eight wrestlers placing in the top four with John Amundson claiming a championship and Tom Bouressa earning second place. Brett Ripley, Mike Kirscht and Tanner Weltzin all earned thirds and Charlie Kirscht and Josh Betterman both took fourths.
8. Brainerd Warriors
The Warriors have been struggling with injuries and sickness the past couple of weeks. They did have a good showing at the Elk River Tourney with 147 points to earn fourth place with eight wrestlers placing in the top four. Brandon Mutz and Tyler Jenson both won championships and Cody Hummel and Jake Patnote both earned seconds. Taking thirds for the Warriors were Josh Yager, Mitch Yager, Nick Loreno an Scott Padrnos. They dropped duals Central Lakes foe Little Falls 52-18 and Bemidji 52-12. The Warriors did topped Central Lakes Conference foe Fergus Falls in a very good dual 35-26.
9. Monticello Magic
The Magic dropped duals to Mississippi 8 foes Big Lake 32-20, Becker 35-21 and to Section 8AAA foes Sauk Rapids 45-23 and Grand Rapids 28-27. They did beat another Section 8AAA foe St. Cloud Apollo 43-23. The Magic had a very good season; however they have struggled a bit the past couple of weeks. In fact the best season in recent years for them. They completed the regular season with win over Mississippi 8 Conference foe Princeton 60-12. The Magic have great numbers out for wrestling; so look for them to continue to grow and continue to have good seasons. I am sure they will in the future continue to gain more media attention as the success continues to progress.
10. St. Cloud Apollo Eagles
The Eagles topped Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in non-conference action 37-33 and they dropped duals to Central Lakes foe Willmar 50-20 in Section 8AAA dual meet action dropped duals to Monticello 43-23 and Grand Rapids 40-31. The Eagles topped Central Lakes Conference foe Sartell 45-35. The Eagles competed their dual meet season with a win over Central Lakes Conference rival Sartell 45-35. They completed their regular season with a strong showing at the Albany “Purple Pride” Tourney with 109.5 points and six wrestlers placing in the top four. Brett Scharmer won the championship and Matt Spoden and Cam Jacobson were impressive in earning seconds. Mike Abrego had a nice tourney finishing with a fall for third place and Isaac Pentz earned fourth place. They Eagles were without Justin Pulliam; he would have been the favorite at 135.
11. North Branch Vikings
The Vikings in dual meet action topped Braham 36-33, Robbinsdale Cooper 38-21, Mora 39-31, St. Benilde-St. Margaret, Zimmerman 49-24 and Spring Lake Park 36-20. They dropped their final regular season dual to No. 7AA ranked Foley 44-12.
12. St. Cloud Tech Tigers
The Tigers dropped Central Lakes Conference Duals to Fergus Falls 46-25, Rocori 46-25 and Sauk Rapids 61-9. They topped Ogilvie in non-conference dual meet action 42-39.
