Annual MWCA All-State Academic Team named

The 2006 edition of the MWCA (Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association) All-State Academic Team consists of 26 student-athletes with a combined GPA of 3.75. These wrestlers have amassed over 3,500 career wins with a combined winning percentage of 81% “We strive to find excellent students who also happen to be excellent wrestlers,” said Dean Jennissen, MWCA All-State Academic Chairperson. “This is truly the cream of the crop and a great example of the caliber of student-athletes we have involved in wrestling state-wide.”

The 26 honorees will be awarded plaques at the 38th Annual MWCA Recognition Banquet on Wednesday, March 1st which kicks off the 2006 State Wrestling Tournament at the River Centre in St. Paul March 2nd-4th.

Junior or senior wrestlers are chosen based upon the following criteria:

  1. National Honor Society membership -- 25 points per year
  2. Cumulative GPA -- 3.95 = 395 points
  3. State Tournament Participation -- 25 points per year
  4. Overall matches wrestled -- wins and losses -- 1 point per match
  5. Winning percentage -- 77% = 77 points
  6. State Tournament Placement -- 1st (50 points), 2nd (40), 3rd (35), 4th (25), 5th (20) and 6th (10)

Interesting Facts about the 2006 MWCA All-State Academic Team…

  1. Four Individual State Champions made the team
  2. The team has one brother combination -- the Moenkedick’s of Perham, Philip and Kenny
  3. 14 members are from Class AA, 8 from Class A and 4 from Class AAA
  4. There were no entries for the 103 lb. weight class
  5. Three members of the team have a perfect GPA of 4.0
  6. There are three Andersons on this year’s team!
  7. Alex Meger, Travis Elg, Mike Wubbena, Brandon Greiner and Brent Eidenschink were members of the 2005 team.
  8. There were 125 individual entries -- the most ever!
