The Eagles of Carl Sandburg, Illinois were the overall champions of The Clash IV National Duals tournament held in Rochester, MN on December 30-31, 2005. Carl Sandburg defended their title of a year ago with a tournament record of 6-0 after defeating Glenbard North, IL 35-18, Jackson, NJ 40-16, and Hastings 47-18 during the final Saturday session.
Hastings (Class AAA #6 rated) was the only Minnesota team to make it to the top division bracket after narrowly edging first seed Wisconsin Rapids 27-26 on Friday. Hastings was 3-0 after Friday and finished the tournament 3-3 overall after losses to Jackson, NJ, Glenbard North, IL, and Tournament Champion Carl Sandburg, IL on Saturday. "I think we surprised a few people this weekend," said Hastings Coach Paul Vaith, "even in the championship round in six or seven matches we either won or were pushing people. My hat's off to the kids."
Three Minnesota teams ended up in the second division bracket on Saturday, after runner-up finishes on Friday. Albert Lea (AAA #1), Apple Valley (AAA #5), and St. Michael-Albertville (AA #1), along with Kalispell, Montana competed against each other in the final session round-robin bracket. Apple Valley, St. Michael-Albertville, and Albert Lea all went 2-1 on the final day in the second division bracket. Apple Valley was declared the bracket winner by criteria over St. Michael-Albertville. All three teams finished with 4-2 overall tournament records.
The third division bracket was all out-of-state teams, while the fourth division bracket featured two Minnesota Teams Owatonna (AAA #2) and Simley (AAA #11). Owatonna beat Simley in the final session matchup 30-22 and finished 4-2. Simley finished 2-4. "I'm really proud of our kids because they've battled through a lot of adversity," said Owatonna Coach Scot Davis, "We came back after a rough day on Friday and went 3-0. Every meet was tough for us today. We had a total team effort and that's all you can ask for."
After losing to Midwest City, Oklahoma in the very first round, Adrian came back to win their remaining five duals to top the fifth division bracket. "The boys really picked it up on Friday," said Adrian Coach Gregg Nelson, "we struggled a little bit at first, but then Saturday was awesome. We came to wrestle and I'm very pleased with our performance."
