| The Guillotine 2007 Academic All-State
Wrestlers (First published in the May 11, 2007 issue of The Guillotine Newsmagazine.) The 2007 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features thirty first team members, thirty second team members, and seventy-nine honorable mention wrestlers. Wrestlers were submitted on nomination forms signed by their coach and principal verifying their current GPA (minimum 3.0), number of current season varsity matches wrestled (min. 15), current season win percentage (min. 60%) and grade (junior or senior). Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, current state tournament placement and cumulative high school GPA. Each of the first team wrestlers receive two certificates and a letter of recognition. This year’s top Academic All-State wrestler spot goes to senior Hakan Binek of Staples-Motley. Hakan capped his high school career with the Class AA 215-pound state title and a 4.033 GPA. Matt scored a 542.3 out of a possible 549 on his All-State Wrestler nomination. Not far behind Binek was junior Tony Valek of Scott West with a score of 538.7. Valek was the Class AA 135 pound state champion. Everyone on the first team placed fifth or higher at state this year, including eleven champions and eight runner-ups. First team members have an average season win percentage of 93%, an average of over 39 season wins, and an average GPA of 3.74. Eleven nominees had a 4.0 GPA (or higher) and all eleven made our first or second team: Tyler Jensen of Brainerd, Hakan Binek of Staples-Motley, Matthew Pfarr of LeSueur-Henderson, Bryce Mikel of Hastings, Joe Bulger of Trinity at River Ridge, Matthew Baarson of Champlin Park, Ross Neubauer of BOLD/Buffalo Lake-Hector, Jack Ehrke of Mankato West, Will Johnson of Hibbing, Cody Lensing of Totino-Grace, and Larry Martini of United North Central. Three nominees finished as undefeated 2007 state champions and all three made our first or second team: Zach Sanders of Wabasha-Kellogg, Matt Mincey of Apple Valley, and Pat Mahan of Owatonna. Repeat first team members are Joe Murphy of Trinity at River Ridge, Ben Anderson of Frazee, Zach Sanders of Wabasha-Kellogg, Beau Hansen of Albert Lea Area, Joe Grygelko of Saint Michael-Albertville, Matthew Baarson of Champlin Park, and John Vaith of Hastings. Four teams had three first or second team members: Albert Lea Area, Jackson County Central, Perham, and Trinity at River Ridge. Seven teams had two first or second team members: Apple Valley, Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, Grand Meadow/Kingsland/LeRoy-Ostrander, Hastings, Owatonna, Saint Michael-Albertville, and Scott West. Congratulations to all nominees and thanks to the coaches, administrators and parents for helping The Guillotine recognize some of Minnesota’s finest student-athletes. |

Hakan Binek, 215 lbs.Staples-Motley, 12th Hakan finished his senior season with a 39-1 record and a 215 pound state championship. It was his first trip to state. Hakan is a member of the National Honor Society and has a GPA of 4.033. He is a letterwinner in football and wrestling and has been a team captain for both. Hakan has also lettered in Orchestra and Jazz Band. He competes in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling in the off-season. He plans to wrestle in college and study biology or chemistry with a pre-med emphasis. Hakan is the son of Paul and Charlene and he is coached by Gordy Thompson. |
Tony Valek, 135 lbs.Scott West, 11th Tony is a three-time state entrant and a two-time placer winning the title this year as a junior. He carries a 3.967 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. He had a 42-5 season record and is 124-20 for his career. Tony was a national cadet duals All-Tournament Team member in Greco-Roman. He is a Tiger Target Leadership Team member. Tony is the son of Chuck and Monica. He is coached by Jerold Stauffacher and Darren Ripley. |
Cole Von Ohlen, 119 lbs.Jackson County Central, 11th Cole is a two-time state finalist winning the 119 pound title this year as a junior and placing second last year at 103 pounds. He has a 3.885 GPA. Cole finished with a season record of 47-1 and is 115-16 for his career. He was selected to this season’s Clash Duals All-Tournament Team. Cole was a Cadet Greco-Roman All-American and was runner-up at the 2006 NHSCA Sophomore Nationals. He is the son of Nick and Ellen and is coached by Randy Baker. |
Joe Murphy, 130 lbs.Trinity at River Ridge, 12th Joe is a two-time state champion and four-time state placer. He finished his high school career with a 200-19 record including a 43-1 record this season. Joe was an all-conference selection five years in a row and was named outstanding conference wrestler in 2006. He is now a two-time Guillotine Academic All-State first team member. His GPA is 3.73. Joe plans to attend college in the fall and possibly wrestle. His parents are Pat and LeeAnn. Joe is coached at Trinity by his father Pat. |
Ben Anderson, 140 lbs.Frazee, 12th Ben ended his career with a 39-1 season record and a state title at 140 pounds. He was a four-time state participant placing third as a junior. He earned 179 varsity wins overall. Ben is a member of the National Honor Society, a two-time Guillotine Academic All-State first team member, and a 2004 and 2005 Paul Wellstone Scholar/Athlete. The son of Curt and Jane, Ben carries a 3.759 GPA. He plans to continue his wrestling career in college joining his former coach Clay Nagel at Concordia. Ben’s future plans include law school and to hopefully someday be with the CIA or FBI. His coach at Frazee is John Barlund. |
Philip Moenkedick, 171 lbs.Perham, 12th Philip is a five-time state participant placing second as a senior at 171 pounds and sixth as a sophomore at 130 pounds. He finished his high school career with a 190-38 record including a 41-1 record this season. His GPA is 3.93. Philip is the son of Andy and Katy. His coach is Rob Moser. Philip plans to wrestle and play baseball at Concordia. He looks to major in math and physical education and obtain a coaching license. |
Travis Rutt, 160 lbs.Jackson County Central, 11th Just a junior, Travis is a five-time state entrant and four-time state placewinner. He won the title this season at 160 pounds. Travis placed third as a sophomore, fourth as a freshman and third as an eighth grader. He has a career record of 214-19 including his 47-1 season this year. Travis is on track to shatter the Minnesota all-time career wins record. He has numerous wrestling accolades outside of high school including two-time Cadet folkstyle national champion, Cadet Greco-Roman national champion, and two-time Cadet double All-American. Travis plans to wrestle in college and pursue Sports Medicine. His parents are John and Cathy. Travis is coached by Randy Baker. |
Tony Willaert, 189 lbs.Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, 12th Tony made the most of his first state tournament appearance by taking home the title at 189 pounds. He has a 3.755 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. Tony’s season record was 35-1 and he finished 74-35 for his career. He’s been a member of the Minnesota Storm (MN/USA Wrestling) team for two years. Tony plans to continue wrestling in college, possibly at Saint John’s University. His parent is Jeff Willaert. Tony is coached by Andre Harnitz. |
Nic Leither, 189 lbs.Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, 11th Nic is a four-time state entrant and a two-time placewinner. He placed third at state this year as a junior at 189 pounds and was a runner-up last season at 171 pounds. He carries a 3.94 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. The son of Jim and Doree, Nic was coached by Tim Roberg. He had a 44-1 season this year and is 169-17 for his career. Nic’s brother Matt was a Guillotine Academic All-State first team member last year. |
Zach Sanders, 119 lbs.Wabasha-Kellogg, 12th Zach won his fifth state title this year and finished undefeated with forty-four wins. He won a 2007 NHSCA senior national folkstyle title this spring and was a USA Wrestling junior freestyle national champion last summer. He has numerous folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman titles to his credit. Zach was named Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association Mr. Minnesota Wrestler for 2007. He has a 3.58 GPA. Zach finished his high school career with a 223-5 record. His win percentage of 97.8 puts him at the top of the Minnesota wins percentage list. Zach will continue his wrestling career at the University of Minnesota in the fall. His parents are Ron and Elizabeth. Zach’s coach is his father Ron. |
Beau Hansen, 145 lbs.Albert Lea Area, 12th Beau is a two-time state placewinner. He placed third this year at 145 pounds and fourth a year ago at 130 pounds. Beau had a 41-6 record this season and finished 124-47 for his career. He carries a 3.9 GPA and has been a member of Albert Lea’s MWCA State Academic Team Championship four years in a row. Beau is also a member of the National Honor Society. He has been on Student Council for four years. The son of Jon and Vickie, Beau is coached by Larry Goodnature. His college choices have been narrowed down to Augsburg or Northwestern. |
Taylor Ignaszewski, 171 lbs.Albert Lea Area, 12th Taylor was coached by Larry Goodnature and is the son of Ron and Jonelle. He is a two-time state participant placing third this season. His season record was 43-5 and he ended his career at 108-38. He was a team captain this season and was named Big Nine All-Conference. Taylor’s GPA is 3.8. |
Justin Berns, 145 lbs.Perham, 12th Justin carries a 3.72 GPA and is a National Honor Society member. He is planning to pursue a chemistry major and wrestle at Concordia in the fall. Among Justin’s achievements are three-time conference champion, section champion, Wadena Invitational champion, Rumble on the Red champion, two-time “Most Dedicated” team award, and eighth on Perham’s all-time wins list. He was runner-up at state this season in his first appearance. He had a 39-2 season record and was 138-32 for his career. He is the son of Ron and Trish and is coached by Robb Moser. |
Josh Bain, 152 lbs.Grand Meadow/Kingsland/LeRoy-Ostrander, 12th Josh finished his varsity career with a 140-28 record and a second place finish at state. His season record was 38-3. Josh is a four-time state tournament participant. He is a four-time all-conference selection in wrestling and in academics. Josh plans to wrestle for Saint Olaf next year. He has a 3.724 GPA. Josh is coached by Bill Simpkins and his mother is Christina. |
Eric Yngsdal, 135 lbs.Byron, 11th The son of Ron and Karen, Eric is coached by Ryan Radke. He is a four-time state entrant placing third this season. Eric had a 43-2 season record and is 147-30 for his career. He has a 3.761 GPA. Eric is a three-time all-conference selection in wrestling and he was all-conference in football in 2006. He holds several school wrestling records including career takedowns, takedowns in a season, and most wins in a season. He plans to attend a four-year college and wrestle. Law enforcement is a possibility. |
Luke Amsden, 125 lbs.River Valley, 11th Luke is a four-time state tournament placer. He placed third this season at 125 pounds, third as a sophomore at 112 pounds, second as a freshman at 103 pounds, and sixth as an eighth grader at 103 pounds. He had a 36-1 season record and is 185-24 for his career. Luke has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years and has 3.80 GPA. He placed third at the 2006 NHSCA Sophomore Nationals and was in the top twelve at this year’s NHSCA Junior Nationals. Luke was a team captain this season. He plans to continue his wrestling career in college. The son of Dennis and Marie, Luke is coached by Jeff Briard. |
Trent Sovde, 160 lbs.Greenbush-Middle River/Badger, 12th Trent is a four-time state entrant and a two-time placewinner. He was a state champion this year at 160 pounds and was a runner-up last season at 145 pounds. He has a 3.451 GPA and is a member of the 2007 MWCA Academic team. Trent has competed in freestyle and Greco-Roman in the off-season. He is also a Minnesota state trap shooting champion. The son of Rick and Kathy, Trent is coached by Todd Bergeron. He had a 37-1 season this year and is 137-36 for his career. Trent plans to wrestle at North Dakota State next season. |
Tom Kelliher, 119 lbs.Apple Valley, 11th Tom is a three-time state runner-up and a three-time Section 6 champion. He was 44-4 on the season and is 133-12 overall with his senior year left. Tom was named team “Rookie of the Year” as a freshman and “Most Dedicated” as a junior. He has a 3.58 GPA. Tom represented Apple Valley in the National Council for Teachers English essay competition. He’s the son of Tom and Darla, and he is coached by Jim Jackson. Tom plans to study and wrestle at a Division I University and pursue a degree in Journalism and continue his education in graduate school. |
Pat Mahan, 215 lbs.Owatonna, 12th Pat is a three-time state placewinner winning the title this year at 215 pounds. He was third as a junior at 189 pounds and fourth as a sophomore at 215 pounds. He capped his senior season with a perfect 45-0 record and finished his high school career at 114-19. He was a USA Wrestling Junior Greco-Roman national champion last summer and he placed fourth at this year’s NHSCA senior folkstyle nationals. Pat was a USA Wrestling Cadet Nationals All-American in both Greco-Roman and freestyle. He has a 3.29 GPA. Pat is coached by Scot Davis and is the son of Bridget Lawler and Brian Mahan. He has signed to wrestle at Northern Iowa. |
Joe Grygelko, 145 lbs.Saint Michael-Albertville, 12th Five-time section champion Joe Grygelko is also a four-time placer at state with finishes of first (12th grade), second (11th), third (10th), and fourth (9th) the past four years. He had a 46-1 record on the season, and he finished 218-30 overall. Joe was a two-time MWCA academic team member and has a 3.33 GPA. He also competed in cross country. The son of Tom and Karen, Joe is coached by Gregg Greeno and Dan Lefebvre. He recently signed a letter of intent to wrestle at the University of Minnesota. |
Matthew Pearson, 135 lbs.Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, 12th Matthew is a three-time state tournament participant placing fourth as a senior. He is a six-time letter winner in wrestling, helping ACGC qualify for the state tournament five times. Matthew is a two-time all-conference selection and a two-time captain. He is also a four-time letter winner in cross country and a two-time letter winner in golf. Matthew’s been very involved with FFA and is a four year member of student council. He’s been a National Honor Society member and has a 3.93 GPA. He had a 35-7 season record and a 104-45 career record. His parents are Neil and Sheila and his coach is Tim Roberg. Matthew plans on enrolling at the University of Minnesota with aspirations of becoming a veterinarian. |
Ross Neubauer, 130 lbs.BOLD/Buffalo Lake-Hector, 12th Ross has a perfect 4.0 GPA. He plans to attend Southern Methodist University in Fort Worth, Texas. The son of David and Carrie, Ross is a two-time state entrant, finishing fifth as a senior. His season record was 36-5 and his career record ended at 96-36. Ross was a 2006 West Central Conference champion. He was a KNUJ Wrestler of the Week, a Hutchinson Leader All-Area Team member, a Willmar Tribune All-Area Team member, and a KDUZ All-Area Team member. Ross was coached by Tom Gruhlke. |
Ryan Timmerman, 119 lbs.Saint Peter, 11th Ryan is a two-time state participant, placing second this season. He had a 36-5 season record and is currently 101-25 for his career. Ryan is a two-time South Central Conference champion. He is an active member of the National Honor Society and has a 3.592 GPA. Ryan is coached by Keith Hanson. His parents are Joel and Lynn. Ryan plans to attend a four-year college after high school and possibly wrestle. |
Matthew Baarson, 140 lbs.Champlin Park, 12th Matthew is a two-time state entrant and placewinner, finishing fifth as a senior at 140 pounds and sixth as a junior at 130 pounds. His season record was 35-7 and his career record ended at 140-48. Matthew was a two-time all-conference selection. Matthew has a 4.0 GPA. He was a 2006 Guillotine Academic All-State first team member. Matthew plans on continuing his wrestling career in college. He is coached by Bill Maresh. Matthew’s parents are Craig Baarson and Peg and Gary Lustan. |
Spencer Beech, 119 lbs.Breckenridge, 12th Spencer is a four-time state participant, placing second this year at 119 pounds and sixth as a sophomore at 112 pounds. He is an honor student with a 3.59 GPA. Spencer was named Heart O’ Lakes All-Conference for wrestling in 2007 and honorable mention for baseball in 2006. He is an Eagle Scout. Spencer is the son of Paul and Gail and he is coached by Martin Lanter. He plans to pursue a business degree in college. |
Matthew Pfarr, 145 lbs.LeSueur-Henderson, 11th Matthew is a two-time state tournament entrant, placing fifth as a junior at 145 pounds and sixth as a sophomore at 130 pounds. He has a 4.0 GPA and a career record of 134-41. Matthew’s season record was 34-8. He was a 2007 Minnesota River All-Conference selection. Matthew is the son of Dave and Robin. He is coached by J.D. Pesch and Scott Wilson. |
Matt Morris, 160 lbs.Albert Lea Area, 12th Matt has been an all-conference selection four years in a row . He has placed at state twice – second this season at 160 pounds and fourth as a junior at 145 pounds. Matt finished his high school career with a 148-58 record and he was 43-4 this season. He has a 3.51 GPA. Matt plans to attend Augustana in Sioux Falls and wrestle. He would like to major in chemistry or biology and become a pharmacist. Matt’s parents are Bill and Brenda. His coach is Larry Goodnature. |
Kenny Steffens, 135 lbs.Wadena-Deer Creek, 12th Kenny is a two-time state tournament entrant, placing second this year. The son of Duane and Shelley, he has been on the honor-roll academically since seventh grade. Kenny’s GPA is 3.737. He’s been named all-conference in wrestling. Kenny finished his season at 20-4, and has a 154-65 career varsity record. He is coached by Norm Gallant. Kenny plans on attending the Minnesota State Community and Technical College at Wadena and helping with the Wadena-Deer Creek wrestling program. |
Caleb Lines, 171 lbs.Jackson County Central, 11th Caleb is a two-time state participant and he placed third this season. He ended his junior campaign with a 36-6 record and his career record is 90-30. Caleb is a seven-time MN/USA Wrestling State Champion and a 2006 USA Wrestling Cadet All-American in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. He has a 3.676 GPA. Caleb is coached by Randy Baker and he is the son of Shane Lines and Terri Lewis. He would like to wrestle or play football in college and get a degree in sports medicine. |
John Vaith, 140 lbs.Hastings, 12th John is a four-time state tournament entrant, placing fourth as a junior and third this season. He has a 3.64 GPA and was a MSHSL Triple A (Academics, Athletics, Fine Arts) finalist. John was a 2007 MWCA Academic team member and a 2006 Guillotine Academic All-State first team member. He was a two-year team captain and a Clash Duals Scholar/Athlete Scholarship recipient. John had a career record of 140-45. His season record was 36-6. He was a three-time all-conference selection. John is the son of Paul and Jill. He is coached by his father Paul. John plans to study business at St. John’s or St. Thomas and may wrestle. |
