Montini continues Illinois' winning ways at The Clash

The Broncos of Montini Catholic, Illinois were the overall champions of The Clash V National Duals tournament held in Rochester, MN on December 29-30, 2006. Montini won in their first appearance at The Clash with a record of 5-1. In the final Saturday session, the Broncos defeated Jackson Memorial, New Jersey 36-28, narrowly topped Apple Valley, Minnesota 33-32, and lost their last dual of the tournament to Carl Sandburg, Illinois 42-24 after having the title wrapped up.

Illinois teams have now won four out of the first five years of the Tournament's young history. Glenbard North (IL) won the first ever Clash Duals in 2003, followed by Apple Valley in 2004 (Jan.), and Carl Sandburg in 2004 (Dec.) and 2005.

Apple Valley (Class AAA #2 rated) was the only Minnesota team to make it to the championship bracket after upsetting first seed Glenbard North 31-25 on Friday. Apple Valley was 3-0 after Friday and finished the tournament 5-1 overall after beating Carl Sandburg 32-31 (on third criteria), Jackson Memorial 36-24, and the loss to Montini Catholic.

Two Minnesota teams ended up in the second division bracket on Saturday, after runner-up finishes on Friday. Hastings (AAA #1) and Albert Lea (AA #3), along with Glenbard North, Illinois and Archbishop Moeller, Ohio competed against each other in the final session round-robin bracket. Glenbard North won the bracket by defeating Albert Lea 38-15, Archbishop Moeller 33-30, and Hastings 45-17. Hastings won the Minnesota showdown with Albert Lea 36-21 to finish the tournament with a 3-3 record. Albert Lea finished 2-4.

Wayzata (AAA #4) was the lone Minnesota team in the third division bracket. The Trojans placed second in the bracket by defeating Omaha Skutt, Nebraska 34-27 and South Plainfield, New Jersey 35-29. They lost to bracket winner Wisconsin Rapids 38-15. Wayzata finished the tournament with a 4-2 record.

The fourth division bracket featured two Minnesota Teams – Anoka (AAA #5) and Scott West (AA #1). Scott West took second place in the bracket defeating Anoka 25-23 and Sedro-Woolley, Washington 45-22. They lost to bracket winner Vacaville, California 33-25. Scott West finished with a tournament record of 3-3. Anoka finished the tournament 2-4.

After losing to Wisconsin Rapids in the very first round, Simley (AAA #6) came back to win their remaining five duals to top the fifth division bracket.

Other Minnesota teams who competed along with their ranking and tournament record’s were: Kasson-Mantorville (AA #7) 3-3, Jackson County Central (AA #2) 4-2, St. Michael-Albertville (AA #3) 3-3, Owatonna (AAA #7) 2-4, Adrian (AA #6) 2-4, and Aitkin (A #4) 3-3.
