Central Minnesota’s Top Class A Teams
1. Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Fighting Saints
The Fighting Saints have had some very impressive showings in recent
weeks with their fifth place finish at the Rumble on Red; a 50 team
event. They scored 193.5 points. Kevin Steinhaus and Cody Kinney both
won championships and Mitchell Hagen and Jeff Bauman both earned fourth
place. No placing but having great tourneys were Klinton VanHeuveln,
Spencer Almen, Aaron Zimmer and Brad Kneisl were all 3-2 a the Rumble.
The Fighting Saints topped Section 3A teams Yellow Medicine East 45-21
and Dawson-Boyd 51-21 and Camden Conference foe Tracy-Milroy/Balaton
59-15. They topped the field of eight teams at the
Belgrade-Brooten/Elrosa with 190.5 points and eleven wrestlers placing
in the top four. They won five championships by Kevin Steinhaus,
Mitchell Hagen, Chris Braaten, Brad Kneisl and Cody Kinney. Klinton Van
Heuveln, Spencer Almen and Joel Bauman all earned second place and Kurt
Timmons, Jacob Engler and Aaron Zimmer all earned third place. The
Fighting Saints topped two Section 3A foes Ortonville 63-9 and LQPV
57-18 and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 44-21. They had a great showing at
the Paynesville tourney with 216 Points and eleven wrestlers placing in
the top four including championships by Kevin Steinhaus, Mitchell
Hagen, Joel Bauman, Chris Braaten, Brd Kneisl and Cody Kinney. Specner
Almen and Klinton Van Heuveln both earned second place, Kurt Timmons
earned third place and Joey Paulson took fourth place.
2. Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Falcons
The Falcons defeated West Central South Conference foe BOLD/BLH 44-15
and Section 5A foes Paynesville 32-24 and Howard Lake/Waverly/Winsted
56-12. They earned second place at the Belgrade-Brooten/Elrosa Tourney
with 160.5 points and eleven wrestlers placing in the top four. Nic
Leither, Ben Meyer and Jeremy Anderson all won championships, Hayden
Rouser and Micah Larson both earned second place and Mike Kramer,
Travis Fredericksen and Jakob Carlson all earned third place. Scot
Litzau, Ryan Larson and Travis Whitcomb all took fourth place. The
Falcons topped West Central Conference foes Benson 50-17, Sauk Centre
62-9, LQPV 54-14 and rival Litchfield 45-10. The Falcons had a strong
showing at the Annandale-Maple Lake Duals with three huge wins for the
championship, they defeated highly regarded AA Windom 43-27, AAA
Buffalo 52-12 and AAA Chaska 54-3. Nic Leither, Travis Fredricksen, Ben
Meyer, Jokob Carlson Micah Larson and Jerermy Anderson were all 3-0 at
the Annandale/ML Duals.
3. Paynesville Bulldogs
The Bulldogs have been impressive with a huge win over Section 5A foe
Howard Lake/Waverly/Winsted 46-15 and West Central North Conference foe
Melrose 70-3. They dropped duals to highly ranked AA foe Foley 25-24
and to Section 5A rival Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 32-24. Jordan
Christian, Jon Kerzman, Cory Spanier and Jordan Spaeth were all 3-0 at
there recent triangular. The Bulldogs earned second place at the
Farmington Duals with wins over AAA Northfield 47-16 and class A ranked
Chatfield 37-24. They did drop the Championship match to No. 4A ranked
United South Central 32-22. Jeff Albright and Jordan Christian were
both unbeaten at the Farmington Duals. The Bulldogs had a very strong
showing at their invitational with 203.5 points to earn second place.
They had twelve wrestlers place in the top four including a
championship by Jordan Christian and seconds by Dylan Sheridan, Jeff
Albright, Cory Spanier, Jordan Spaeth and Jon Kerzman. Ryan Gale,
Andrew Moser, Matt Doom and Dustin Sieben all earned third place and
Kevin Klein took fourth place.
4. Yellow Medicine East Sting
The Sting have wins over West Central South Conference foes Minnewaska
42-21, Morris Area 53-13 and Montevideo 56-21. They topped Section 3A
foe Dawson-Boyd 45-23 and Redwood Valley 66-3. They did lose to Section
3A foe Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 45-21. The Sting topped the field of
teams at the Norwood Young America Invitational with 248.5 points and
twelve wrestlers placing in the top four. Casey Field, Wyatt Sand, Levi
Specht, Tanner Aus, Justin Aus, Justin Tangen and Phil Johnson all won
championships. Martin Hagen, and Evan Stock both earned seconds and
Logan Johnson, Jordan Hegna and Blake Dandurand all took fourth place.
The Sting had a great showing at the Kimball duals where they topped
three foes including Lean and Mean St. James for the championship 31-27
and Eden Valley-Watkins 48-16 and Rockford 57-15. Levi Specht, Austin
Cole , Casey Field and Martin Hagen were all 3-0 at the Kimball duals.
5. Aitkin Gobblers
The Gobblers topped Section 7A foes Mille Lacs 37-27 , Ogivlie 65-15
and Braham 66-12. They also topped AA rival Grand Rapids 38-22 in
non-conference dual meet action. The Gobblers, wrestling a little
shorthanded, still had a very good showing with 144 points to earn
fourth place at the Rick Lee tourney in Bemidji. They had seven
wrestlers place in the top four including championships by Keith
Waserzieher, Andrew Halberg and Matt Christensen. Dalton Stevens and
Craig Leathers both earned third place and Nathan Cummings and Jordan
Chouanard both took fourth place.
6. Minnewaska Lakers
The Lakers topped West Central South Conference foes Montevideo 54-22,
Morris Area 48-11 and Benson 54-18. They dropped duals to Lean and Mean
AA Fergus Falls 34-32 and to West Central South Conference foe Yellow
Medicine East in a good dual 42-21. The Lakers topped Redwood Valley in
non-conference action 51-21. The Lakers topped the field of teams at
the Benson Braves Classic Tourney with 215.5 points and ten wrestlers
placing in the top four including championships by Dan Braaten, Collin
Jergenson, Brandon Manderscheid and Jon Erickson. Jacob Braaten, Sage
Sachs, David Bond , Cam Shafer and Otto Austin all earned second place
and David Cowen earned third place. The Lakers topped Sauk Centre 54-18
and they lost to Alexandria on the sixth criteria 31-30. They had a
very good showing at their dual meet invitational with wins over CACGB
72-10 and Wheaton-Herman/Norcross 51-27. Collin Jergensen, David Bond
and Austin Otto were all 3-0 at the Laker Duals.
7. Wadena/Deer Creek Wolverines
The Wolverines continue to have a very good season with this very young
team as they topped a pair of Section 6A foes Pelican Rapids 41-31 and
Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 48-33. They lost to highly ranked Frazee in
non-conference action 45-24. The Wolverines topped the field at the
Pine to Prairie tourney with 222.5 points and eleven wrestlers placing
in the top four. Mitch Steffens, Jordan Rentz, Matt Hagen, Trey
VanOrsdel and Tony Wegscheid all won championships. Jared Wegscheid and
Tyler Savoloja both earned seconds and Isaac Lustila and Eddie Lustila
both earned third place. Jacob Wegschied and Josh Sweere both too
fourth place. The Wolverines had a very good showing at the Mahnomen
Duals with wins over Blackduck/Cass Lake/Bena 62-18, and
Mahnomen-Waubun 39-33 and did drop the semifinal dual to
Greenbush-Middle River/Badger 49-18. They earned third place at the
Mahnomen duals. Jared Wegscheid, Trey VanOrsdel, Matt Hagen and Tony
Wegscheid were all 3-0 at Mahnomen.
8. Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale Raiders
The Raiders topped Section 6A foes CACGB 45-31, Barnesville 51-21,
Pelican Rapids 51-21 and Ottertail Central 41-25. They also topped Park
Region Conference rival Osakis 35-30. The Raiders dropped a Section 6A
dual to Wadena-Deer Creek 48-33 and to top ranked AA Perham 47-18. The
Raiders earned fourth place at the Minnewaska Duals win a over section
rival Wheaton-Herman/Norcross 61-15. They dropped duals to Foley 44-22
and Hutchinson 37-24. Ethan Kern, Wade, Sam and Matt Moenkedick were
all unbeaten at the Minnewaska duals.
9. Osakis Silverstreaks
The Silverstreaks topped Park Region Conference foes Parkers Prairie
56-10 and for the first time in school history topped New York Mills
33-25. They have dual meet wins over Barnesville 39-24 and CACGB 65-12.
They dropped a very close dual to Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 35-30. The
Silverstreaks topped a pair of Section 5A foes Eden Valley-Watkins
45-24 and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 49-23.
10. New York Mills Eagles
The Eagles dropped duals to their highly rated rivals Perham 53-13 and
Frazee 48-17. However the Eagles had a great showing at the Barrel of
Fun Tourney in Perham by earning 149 points for third place. They had
six wrestlers place in the top four including championships by Jordan
Novak and Brendan Frost. Andrew Frost earned second place and Brina
Schornack and Myron Bell earned third place and Andy Hendrickx took
fourth place. The Eagles topped Breckenridge 48-22, Browerville/Eagle
Valley 37-33 and United North Central 69-6.
11. Browerville/Eagle Valley Broncos
The Broncos continue to have a very successful season with dual meet
wins over Royalton 39-33, Braham 53-24, Parkers Prairie 62-6, West
Central Area 59-18, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 46-30, Ottertail Central
45-24. The Broncos just missed winning another tourney as they earned
second place with 198 points at the Royalton Invitational. They had
eight wrestlers place in the top four including a pair of championships
by Travis Borchert and Tyler Spycahalla. Rany Shamp, Mitch Schuman,
Julius Stone, Chris Minor, Aaron Perish and Brian Denny all earned
second place. Travis Borchert won the Fall Award with 4 Falls in a
total time of 4:48. The Broncos topped Breckenridge 50-15 and they
dropped a Park Region Conference Dual to New York Mills 37-33.
12. Pierz Pioneers
The Pioneers continue to struggle with various issues, they have yet to
have all their wrestlers in the lineup at one given time. They topped
Central Minnesota Conference foe Holdingford 37-29. They dropped duals
to highly regarded Milaca 56-10 and Big Lake 52-18. The Pioneers went
0-3 at the Little Falls quadrangular; they dropped duals to Litchfield
39-24, Milaca 65-9 and Little Falls 63-16. Clint Poster won all of his
matches at the Little Falls quadrangular. The Pioneers topped Section
7A foe Mille Lacs 40-39 and dropped a non-conference dual to AA foe
Mora 51-19. They earned sixth place at the Paynesville tourney with 106
points and five wrestlers placing in the top four including two
championships by Clint Poster and Tanner Tetrick. John Omann earned
second place and Eric Andres and Alex Huls both earned third place.
Central Minnesota’s Top Class AA Teams
1. Foley Falcons
The Foley Falcons topped Mora 44-21, Princeton 43-3, Rush City 65-9 and
Paynesville in a very close dual 25-24. The Falcons dominated the field
of ten teams at the Dave Roder Invitational in Montevideo with 278.5
points and all fourteen wrestlers placing in the top four. Brandon
Seppelt, Cory Foss and Kris Olson all won championships and Mike
Siegler, Kevin Beehler, Josh Seppelt, Tyler Lewandowski, Jeremy Weber,
Mark Gehling and Sam Keehler all earned second place. Jake Bowland and
Zack Jackson both earned third place and William Brenny and Taylor
Rothfork both took fourth place. The Falcons had possibly their best
showing thus far with their performance at the Bison Duals in Buffalo.
They topped Buffalo 40-16, Glencoe-Silver Lake/LP 61-6, Alexandria
51-17 and highly regarded Adrian 40-15. Brandon Seppelt, Jacob Bowland,
Jordan Linn, Mike Siegler and Cory Foss all were 4-0 at the Bison
Duals. The Falcons had a huge week with big wins over Milaca 29-21 and
West Central North Conference and Section 6AA foe New London-Spicer
27-21, this dual featured five one point matches. They continued their
huge week with three wins at the Minnewaska Duals to earn the
championship with wins over Breckenridge 68-0, Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale
44-22 and Minneota 38-19. Mike Siegler, Kevin Beehler, Jordan Linn,
Cory Foss, Brandon Seppelt and Jacob Bowland.
2. Saint Michael-Albertville Knights
The Knights topped Mississippi 8 Conference foes Buffalo 44-2, Rogers
66-3. The Knights earned sixth place at the Rumble on Red, a 50 team
tourney. Mike Thorn earned second place, Kyle Schumm earned fourth
place, Jordan Campa earned seventh place and Kyle Salonek earned eighth
place. Dustin Kottke was 3-2, Kraig Schumm was 4-2 at this very tough
tourney featuring numerous ranked wrestlers in every weight class. The
Knights dropped a Mississippi 8 Conference dual 30-26 to Cambridge.
They earned third place at the Kiffmeyer duals with wins over highly
ranked North Dakota foe Wahpeton 47-22 and AAA foe Albert Lea 27-25.
The Knights dropped their semifinal dual to the 2AAA rated Hastings
41-18. David Thorn, Kyle Schumm, Kraig Schumm and Jordan Campa were all
unbeaten at the Kiffmeyer Duals.
3. New London-Spicer Wildcats
The Wildcats continue to roll with wins over West Central North
Conference foes Sauk Centre 57-6 and Long Prairie 69-3. Class A foes
Belgrade-Brooten/Elrosa 56-6 and Renville Sacret Heart 64-3. The
Wildcats crushed rival and Section 6AA foe Willmar 67-4 and in a huge
Section 6AA match up they topped Monticello 30-22. The Wildcats knocked
heads with the No. 1 Class AA Perham at the Barrel of Fun tourney in
Perham. They earned second place with 234.5 points and twelve wrestlers
placing in the top four, including two championships by Chad Henle and
John Nething. They had six wrestlers earn second place including Shawn
Hatlestad, Luke Reiter, Dylan Hanson, Chase Austvold, Brandon Keller
and Levi Shultz. Billy Dean, Chris DeLong and Andrew Blomker all earned
third place and Jordan Hennes took fourth place. The Wildcats went to
Foley for the West Central North Conference Dual meet championship and
they fell a little short 27-21. This was an extremely close dual;
featuring five one point matches. We could see a rematch in the Section
6AA dual meet tourney.
4. Milaca Wolves
The Wolves topped Section 7AA foe North Branch 51-15, former Section
6AA foe Big Lake 50-25 and Pierz 56-10. They topped the field at the
Centennial Quadrangular with wins over Irondale 51-6, Mankato West
57-115 and a very good Centennial team 31-20. Denver Rogalla, David
Fradette, Roy, Marshal and Carter Ash were all 3-0 at the Centennial
quadrangular. The Wolves topped the field of teams at the Little Falls
quadrangular with wins over Little Falls 54-12, Pierz 65-9 and
Litchfield 45-15. Carter, Marshal and Ray Carter, Denver Rogalla, Dave
Fradette, Mike Kelly and Jared Loegering were all unbeaten at Little
Falls. They dropped a very close dual to their rival Foley 29-21; we
could see a rematch of these two teams if they should both qualify for
the state tournament.
5. Pequot Lakes/Pine River/Backus Road Crew
The Road Crew topped Mid-State Conference foes Park Rapids 54-20 and
Staples-Motley 57-13. They dominated Blackduck/Cass Lake/Bena 59-15 in
a non-conference dual meet. The Road Crew was a little short handed and
yet they earned second place at the Rick Lee Tourney in Bemidji with
163.5 points and eight wrestlers placing in the top four. Pat Bresnahan
won a championship and Nic Harrison, Chris Harrison and Darlan Rubner
all earned second place. Marcus Hernandez, and Dustin Campbell both
earned third place and Zach Humphrey and Cody Schrupp both took fourth
place.
6. Fergus Falls Otters
The Otters topped Minnewaska 34-32 in a very good dual and Central
Lakes Conference foe Willmar 52-13 and the Spuds of Moorhead 61-3. The
Otters dominated Central Lakes Conference foe Rocori 52-15,
non-conference foe Parkers Prairie 61-11 and rival Barnesville 46-21.
7. Monticello Magic
The Magic topped Mississippi 8 Conference foes Becker 50-20 and
Princeton 61-15. In a match up of Section 6AA foes the Magic split
duals, topping Willmar 58-12 and dropping a very good dual to New
London-Spicer 30-22. The Magic topped the field of teams at the 2nd
Annual Leopold/Haglund Invitational with huge wins over Ellsworth, WI.
63-0, Lake City 57-9 and Lakeville South 68-6. Jake Schmitz, Ryan
Michaelis, Tyler Mergen, Randy Asher, Spencer Lanners, Ben Schwartz,
Tony McConnon, Justin Amidan, Josh Kohler and Ben Schaben were all
unbeaten at the Leopold/Haglund Duals. The Magic had a very good
showing at their own dual meet invitational with huge wins over Park
Center 62-12, Litchfield 43-20 and Rocori 57-18. They did drop the
championship to highly ranked AAA foe Prior Lake 32-23. Tyler Mergen,
Randy Ascher, Justin Amidan and Josh Kohler were all 4-0 and Ryan
Michaelis, Zach Roca and Ben Schwartz were all 3-1 at the Magic Duals.
8. Annandale/Maple Lake
The Lightning topped Section 6AA foes Becker 49-23, Dassel-Cokato 36-33
in an excellent dual. They dropped a close dual to Section 6AA foe Big
Lake 35-27. They earned Wright County Conference dual meet wins over
Orono 48-25 Mound-Westonka 52-23. The Lightning earned second place
with 197 points at the Mustang Invitational in Mora with nine wrestlers
placing in the top four. Alex Couette, Brian Redemske, Pete Nordlie and
Mike Carlson all won championships and Jake Anderson earned second
place. Corey Salveson, Kyle Erickson and Joe Puncochar all earned third
place and Tyler Wurm took fourth place. The Lightning earned third
place at their dual meet invitational with wins over Buffalo 37-23 and
New Prague 27-38. They lost to highly regarded Windom 32-29 in a very
close dual in the semifinals. Brain Redemske, Jake Anderson, Joe
Nordlie and Joe Puncochar were all 3-0 at the Lightning Duals.
9. Dassel-Cokato Chargers
The Chargers topped Wright County Conference foes Waconia 49-18 and
Orono 54-22. They defeated New Prague in non-conference action 30-28
and lost a very close dual to Wright County Conference foe
Annandale-Maple Lake 36-33. The Chargers earned fifth place at the
Bison duals in Buffalo with wins over Buffalo 32-26 and Faribault
45-23. They dropped a very close dual to Section 6AA rival Big Lake
29-28 and highly regarded Adrian 33-28. Zach Peterson and Brendon
Opsahl were both 4-0 and Max Anderson, Dan and Tony Larson were all 3-1
at the Bison Duals. The Chargers earned fourth place at the Paynesville
tourney with 156 points and nine wrestlers placing the top four. Max
Anderson won a championship, Jared Peterson, Danny and Tony Larson all
earned second place. Zach Peterson and Brendon Opsahl both earned third
place. Tyler Dobmeier and Chuck Pokonowski both took fourth place.
10. Albany Huskies
The Huskies topped West Central North Conference foes Sauk Centre
46-21, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 60-16 and Melrose 55-0. The Huskies
earned third place at the Mustang Invitational in Mora with 194 points
and a pair of championships by Matt Dowell and Kurt Schlangen. Jamie
Holt, Bryan Schlangen, Taylor Holthaus, Kyle Litchy, Soctt Groetsch and
Keith Maciejeswki all earned second. John Bredick earned third place
and Trevor Fleischlaker took fourth place.
11. Mora Mustangs
The Mustangs topped Section 7AA foe Princeton 66-6, Rush City 66-10,
Zimmerman, Mille Lacs 36-35 and Pierz 51-19. The Mustangs topped the
field on teams at their own invitational with 206.5 points and eleven
wrestlers placing in the top four including two championships by Andrew
Youngblom and Brad Koehn. Alex Dahms, Quade VanVleet, Seth Sanftner and
Terry Ross all earned second and Dusty Thorhauer, Nick Muehlberg and
Derel Carslon all earned third place. Tyler Carlson and Blake Menard
both took fourth place.
12. BOLD/BLH Warriors
The Warriors topped Glencoe/Silver Lake/LP 44-25, Waconia 40-31 and
Minnetonka 43-24. Jacob Revier, Ricky Morales and Zach Revier were all
3-0 at this triangular. They topped Sibley East in a very good dual
36-32 and dropped a dual to ACGC 44-15. The Warriors went 1-2 in their
quadrangular with a win over Marshall 41-12. They dropped duals to
Zumbrota-Mazeppa 42-22 and Windom 43-32. Kyle Schulte and Cody Hatch
were both unbeaten at their quadrangular. The Warriors topped West
Central South Conference foe Benson and lost to highly regarded St.
James 40-23.
Chisago Lakes Wildcats
The Wildcats topped a pair of those Wisconsin foes, St. Croix Falls,
WI. 46-30 and Amery, WI. 45-30. They topped two foes at their
quadrangular with wins over Patrick Henry 34-5 and Park Center 77-3 and
they dropped a close dual to Totino Grace 40-33. Mike Michaelson,
Travis Kummerer, Shane Hultman, Tony Gall, Joe Bowersox and Kenny
Laplant were all 3-0 at their quadrangular. The Wildcats went 1-3 at
the Hibbing duals with a win over Virginia 45-18, and dropped duals to
White Bear Lake 54-15, Hibbing 51-23 and to Centenniel 66-12. Tony Gall
was 4--0 and Mike Michaelson was 3-1 at the Hibbing duals. The Wildcats
dropped a close conference dual to Spring Lake Park 32-28. They had a
great showing as they topped the field of teams at the
Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguar Invitational with 193. 5 Points and nine
wrestlers placing in the top four. Mike Michaelson, Troy Montague,
Derek Silbenagel and Tony Gall all won championships and Clay Olson
Jake Nase and Travis Kammerer all earned second place. Shane Hultman
and Pao Thao both earned third place.
North Branch Vikings
The Vikings topped a pair of foes Robbinsdale Cooper 51-24 and Fridley
71-6. The Vikings topped the field of eight teams at the Clash of the
Titans at Tartan with 198 points and ten wrestling placing in the top
four. Erik Kostik, Body Suparet and John Morrisson all won
championships and Tom Mork earned second place. Justin Bergerson, Jake
Kostik, Greg Arnt and Matt Newham all earned third place and Chad
Anderson and Matt Lutgen both took fourth place.
Central Minnesota’s Top Class AAA Teams
1. Cambridge-Isanti Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets topped Section 7AAA foes St. Francis 42-21 and Forest
Lake 49-22. They crushed Mississippi 8 foe Rogers 69-0. The Blue
Jackets topped the field of teams at their invitational with 248 points
and thirteen wrestlers placing in the top four. Chad Larsen, Dalton
Lilledahl, Scott Gifford, Tony Nelson and Kyle Groves all won
championships and Adam Kelling, Joe Holmberg, Tyler Swanson and Garrett
Olson all earned second place. Dain Olson and Derek Swanson both earned
third place and Landon Chumley and Tal Bakke both took fourth place. In
a huge Mississippi 8 Conference dual the Blue Jackets topped Saint
Michael-Albertville 30-26 for possibly the conference championship.
They earned second place at the Kiffmeyer duals with big wins over Elk
River 56-13 in the quarterfinals and Albert Lea 33-21 in the
Semifinals. The Blue Jackets lost the championship dual to No. 2AAA
ranked Hastings 46-24. Chad Larsen, Scott Gifford, Tal Bakke and Tony
Nelson were all 3-0 at the Kiffmeyer Duals.
2. Alexandria Cardinals
The Cardinals topped Central Lakes Conference foes Sauk Rapids 44-19,
St. Cloud Apollo 44-24 and Rocori 69-9. The Cardinals earned fourth
place at the Bison duals in Buffalo with wins over Glencoe/Silver
Lake/LP 46-18 and Buffalo 52-15. They dropped duals to Foley 51-17 and
Big Lake 34-33. John Amundson and Nate Kelly both were 4-0 for the
Cardinals at the Bison duals. The Cardinals topped two non-conference
rivals Minnewaska 30-30 (Sixth Criteria) and Sauk Centre 61-7. The
Cardinals went 3-1 at the Monticello Duals with wins over Maple Grove
58-16, Litchfield 37-30 and Hopkins 52-18. Tyler Morical, Charlie
Kirscht, Lucas Betterman, Tanner Weltzin, John Amundson and Nate Kelly
were all 3-0 at the Monticello duals.
3. Brainerd Warriors
The Warriors topped Central Lakes Conference foes Fergus Falls 35-26
and Little Falls 49-30. They earned second place at the Cambridge
Invitational with 174.5 points and ten wrestlers placing in the top
four. Aaron Padrnos, Scott Padrnos, Nick Lingwall and Andrew Wachmuth
all won championships. Jake Patnode earned second place and Chad Ohman
and Brandon Mutz both earned third place and Kyle Anderson, Mach Glasby
and Nick Oakley all took fourth place. The Warriors earned second place
at the Gadberry duals in Moorhead with wins over West Fargo 33-27 and
Moorhead 49-22. They dropped the final to No. 1AA ranked Perham 52-9.
Kyle Anderson was the lone Warrior to go 3-0 at the Gadberry duals.
4. Buffalo Bison
The Bison topped Mississippi 8 conference foe Becker 42-29 and lost to
Saint Michael-Albertville 42-22. The Bison took sixth place at the
their dual meet invitational with a win over Glencoe-Silver Lake/LP
50-36. They lost a close dual to Dassel Cokato 32-26, to highly
regarded Alexandria 52-15 and Foley 40-16. Mike Jeska was the only
unbeaten wrestler for the Bison at their invitational. The Bison had an
impressive outing at the Sauk Rapids Quadrangular with wins over
Bemidji 43-23, Little Falls 42-21 and Sauk Rapids 30-30 on the 3rd
Criteria. Mike Simeon, Brady Maus, Zach Smith and Brandon Ordorff were
all unbeaten at the quadrangular. The Bison earned fourth place at the
Annandale/Maple Lake duals with a win over Sauk Rapids 33-26. They
dropped there semifinal dual to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 52-12 and
their third place match to Annandale-Maple Lake 37-23. Danny Maghrak
was the lone Bison to go 3-0 at the Annandale Duals.
5. Sauk Rapids
The Storm topped Central Lakes foe Little Falls 36-30 and section rival
Bemidji 41-25, in their quadrangular event and dropped a dual to
section foe Buffalo 30-30; third criteria. Shane Fesenmaier, Evan
Warnert, Tyler Spiczka and Wes Voigt were all 3-0 at the quadrangular.
At the Rumble of Red the Storm wrestlers had a great tourney with four
place winners including; Wes Voigt earning third place, Tyler Spiczka
fifth place, Shane Fesenmaier earned sixth place and Evan Warnert took
seventh place. The Storm topped the field of teams at the Royalton
Tourney with 204 points and nine wrestlers placing in the top four.
Shane Fesenmaier, Evan Warnert, Tyler Spiczka, Wes Vogt and John Gans
all won championships. Jeremiah Tripp, Chris Helgeson both earned third
place and Joe Myerchin and Derrick Lass both took fourth place. The
Storm topped cross town and Central Lakes Conference foe St. Cloud Tech
36-30. The Storm dropped their quarterfinal dual to Buffalo in a very
close dual 33-26 at the Annandale/Maple Lake Duals. They dropped duals
to Chaska 44-29 and to New Prague 46-15. Wes Voigt was the lone Storm
wrestler to go 3-0 at the duals.
6. Bemidji Lumberjacks
The Lumberjacks dropped Section 8AAA duals to Sauk Rapids 41-25 and
Buffalo 43-23. They also lost to former section foe Little Falls 42-27.
They topped Grand Rapids in a rematch of Section 8AAA 2007 championship
teams 34-31. They topped Mounds View 45-28 and Rosemount 37-27. They
lost a close dual to highly regarded Forest Lake 38-29. The Lumberjacks
earned fifth place with 134.5 points at the Cambridge Tourney and six
wrestlers placing in the top four. Brandon Bahr, Jake Sorby and Corey
Huber all won championships and Steve Masterson earned second place.
Colton Doty and Dale Norton both earned third place. The Lumberjacks
lost a very close dual to rival Hibbing 30-24.They earned sixth place
at the Rick Lee Invitational that the Lumberjacks host with 139 points
and seven place winners in the top four. Steve Materson and Corey Huber
won championships and Brandon Bahr and Jake Sorby both earned second.
Derek Lofgren and Colton Doty both earned third place and Trevor Lyseng
took fourth place.
7. St. Cloud Apollo
The Eagles topped Central Lakes Conference foe Sartell 42-28 and
Zimmerman in non-conference action 56-21. They dropped a pair of duals
to Central Lakes Conference foe Alexandria 44-24 and to highly regarded
Big Lake 54-30. The Eagles had an impressive showing at the Rumble on
Red a fifty team event and Matt Spoden earned fifth place and Mitch
Bengston earned third place with a 5-2 mark for the tourney. Matt Shave
also have a great showing with a 3-2 mark. The Eagles had a great
showing at the Ogilvie Tourney with 165.5 points to earn second place
with seven wrestlers placing in the top four. Mitch Bengtson, Matt
Shaver and Sam Koetter all won championships and Nick Lawwell, Nam
Nyuyen and Chris Rochelau all earned second place and Marcus Ramos
earned third place. The Eagles earned fifth place at the Kiffmeyer
duals with an impressive win over Elk River 36-34. They dropped a close
dual to highly ranked North Dakota team Wahpeton 39-30 and the highly
ranked AAA Albert Lea 54-14. Matt Shaver was the lone Eagle to go
unbeaten at the Kiffmeyer duals.
8. Elk River Elks
The Elks topped Maple Grove 42-21 and Park Center 64-18, they did drop
a dual to Section 7AAA foe Anoka 40-21. They had a very good showing at
the Bluejacket Tourney in Cambridge with 137 points to earn third
place. The Elks had eight wrestlers place in the top four including one
championship by Eric Stevens and four seconds by Tyler Stevens, Zak
Hertz, Wade Forde and Mitch Hauge. Jake Kolar earned third place and
Kyle Muetzel took fourth place. The Elks took seventh place at the
Kiffmeyer duals with a win over St. Cloud Tech 38-32. They dropped a
very close dual to St. Cloud Apollo 36-34 and to Section 7AAA foe
Cambridge-Isanti 56-13. Wade Forde was the lone Elk that was unbeaten
at the Kiffmeyer Duals.
9. St. Cloud Tech Tigers
The Tigers topped Eden Prairie 45-20 and Kimball 39-31 in
non-conference dual meet action. They dropped a dual to Central Lakes
Conference foe Sauk Rapids 36-30. The Tigers were 2-2 at the Owatonna
Duals with wins over Austin 37-31 and Winona 48-26. They dropped duals
to host Owatonna 51-21 and Henry Sibley 37-33. Mitch Voigt and Peter
Kalla were both 4-0 and Ben Johnson and Cody Erickson were 3-1 at the
Owatonna Duals. The Tigers earned fifth place at the Burnsville Tourney
with 140 points and six wrestlers placing in the top four including
Mitch Voigt, Chris Hoppe and Ben Johnson all earned second place.
Charlie Leathers earned third place and Bryant Amundson and Peter Kalla
both took fourth place. The Tigers dropped three duals at the Kiffmeyer
Duals to Hastings 63-15, Wahpeton 51-23 and to Elk River 38-32. Mitch
Voigt was unbeaten for the Tigers at the Kiffmeyer Duals.
10. Moorhead Spuds
The Spuds dropped duals to Barnesville 55-18, Fergus Falls 61-3,
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 36-27 and Detroit Lakes 30-29. They earned 47th
place with 19 points at the Rumble on Red tourney. The Spuds scored 76
points for twelfth place at the Casselton tourney, they had two
wrestlers place in the top four including Ben Gaughan earned third
place and Mark Wychor earned third place. The Spuds were 0-3 at the
Gadberry duals; they lost to Section 8AAA rival Brainerd 49-22, Mandan,
ND 47-24 and West Fargo 52-18.
