December 15, 2009
Joe Goodman and Dick Iacono were inducted into the Mound Wrestling Hall of Fame on Thursday December 10, 2009.
Joe and Dick are 1947 graduates of Mound High School, and are part of
Mound’s only state champion team. Dick was a four-time state place
winner, three-time finalist, and a state champion his senior year. Dick
was also part of Mound’s only state championship team in 1947. He also
placed 3rd, 2nd, and 1st in the state AAU tournament, with his team
tying for first in 1949. Dick was instrumental in starting a freestyle
club in his hometown of Osseo, which produced several state place
winners and champions, including Olympic bronze medalist Jim Martinez.
Dick was also the tournament director for the School Boy Olympics,
which included wrestlers from several nations. Dick has six sons, which
fueled his desire to be a part of the world’s greatest sport.
Joe was a 1947 graduate of Mound High School, where he was a two-time
state place winner. Joe finished second in state his junior year, and
was unable to wrestle in the finals due to a shoulder injury. He had
beaten the eventual state champ twice that year. In his senior season,
Joe placed 4th individually, and helped his team to their first ever
state championship. With Joe’s contributions, the 1947 team narrowly
edged Litchfield for the title, while at the same time ending a seven
year run for powerhouse Robbinsdale High School. Joe lives in Columbia
Heights with his wife Mary Lou, and has a son and three daughters.
Congratulations to these two friends, state champions, and Hall of Famers!!!
