Osseo wrestlers send well wishes and goodies to the troops
April 19, 2010
Osseo High School Junior wrestler Jon Volp’s older brother Rick, was
deployed to Afghanistan in mid-February. Lieutenant Volp is part of an
Army Artillery unit sent to train Afghan Police. The National Guardsman
resides in Burlington, Vermont, where he is a police officer himself.
Volp was a ‘99 graduate of Osseo and a three-sport athlete competing in
cross-country, Nordic skiing and track.
“Osseo’s athletic director, Ray Kirch, encourages each athletic program
to make a special commitment to its community." explained head coach
Alan Wiley. “When presented with this idea, I knew we could not pass up
the opportunity for the team to help out their community, country and
one of their own.”
The care packages include: Letter’s to the troops, Osseo wrestling
highlight DVDs of the 2009-2010 season, candy, peanuts, rice crispy
treats and microwave popcorn. Also included in the packages: 144
toothbrushes, toothpaste and gum donated by Arbor Lakes Dental in Maple
Grove. The Afghan’s have limited access to these dental hygiene
products, so the troops have been giving them to the Afghan police as
gift offerings.
Included in the wrestlers and team managers letters to the troops; the
kids found ways of relating to what they go through on and off the mat
during the season, to being part of a team in the Army. People with
individual responsibilities working together as one to achieve common
goals. Some had specific stories of hard work and dedication, but
mostly they just wanted to wish them well and thank them for their
sacrifice.
